Looking for a way to spruce up the outside of your home this year without spending a fortune? There are a number of outdoor home repair and remodeling projects that you can tackle on your own that won’t cost you an arm and a leg but will make a big difference in the way your home looks and may also improve its functionality as well. Home repair and remodeling projects can be relatively simple or complex to do, but you will find that if you take some time on occasion to fix things that are broken or to update things that have seen better days, you will get more enjoyment out of your home going forward.

Here are 5 DIY home repair and remodeling projects to get your backyard and garden into tip top shape this year.

Gutter maintenance and repair – Most people may think about cleaning out the gutters if they see them filled with leaves and debris, but what many people don’t take the time to do is to check the gutters and leaders when they are empty to make sure that everything is properly adhered to the sides of the house and that there are no leaks or blockages along the span of guttering that will disrupt the flow of water down and away from the house. Something as simple as doing a visual inspection on a rainy day to notice any dammed up water spilling over the edges of the gutters can be a useful home repair and remodeling project that can keep your home from being damaged by a build-up of water due to faulty or blocked gutters.

Driveway cracks – Over time, it is very common for cracks to occur in blacktop driveways. These cracks can become unsightly and can also lead to bigger cracks and problems if left unrepaired. Filling the cracks is a pretty easy DIY home repair and remodeling project that you can do to improve the look of your home’s exterior and to keep the cracks from eventually creating structural damage. All you need is some driveway crack filler or blacktop patch and driveway sealer and you’ll have a driveway that looks as good as new.

Deck repairs and updates – Unless your deck is made from Trex, or another type of manufactured wood-like product, the wood on your deck needs not only periodic maintenance, such as staining and sealing, but also repair. If the wood on your deck is starting to warp, splinter, crack, sag or rot, it may be time to repair or replace some of the wood so that your deck not only looks its best, but so that it is safe. This may also be a good time to do a bit of deck remodeling, such as adding a few post cap lights to the deck railing, adding a built in garden planter or deck storage box, or simply sprucing up your outdoor deck décor when you are all finished with your repairs by getting an outdoor rug, maybe some new outdoor dining furniture and a few new outdoor accessories. This is one home repair and remodeling project that will surely bring you enjoyment as you spend time outdoors in your backyard.

Front entrance – Have you taken a look at the area around your front entrance lately to see if anything in the front of your home needs repair or remodeling? Chances are that you haven’t, especially if you’re one of those people who don’t often use their front doors for entry into their homes (going in through the garage instead). Check out whether your front door needs repainting, restaining or resealing. Does your doorbell work properly? What kind of shape is your door hardware and kickplate in – does it need to be shined up or replaced because it’s pitted or discolored? How about the outside lights around your entry way – are they bright enough and can you update the styles of lights to give your entryway a more welcoming feel? These are all outdoor home repair and remodeling projects that can improve the overall look of your home and may even increase its value by improving the curb appeal of the house.

Landscaping – When you think of home repair services and remodeling projects, you often don’t think of landscaping, but there are many aspects of your home’s landscaping that can use a little repair here and there, and certainly a bit of remodeling of your landscaping and garden décor can breathe new life into the exterior look of your home. When it comes to repairs, you should check to make sure that any automatic sprinklers work properly and that the outside water spigots are in good working condition and are not leaking (which can cost you lots of extra money in water usage!). Also see if any retaining walls and walls that edge off landscaping areas made from wood, stone or bricks are in good shape or if they need a bit of TLC. If you want to do a bit of “remodeling” to your landscaping, get a few new plants or flowers and plant them in areas that are barren or that have older plants that may have seen better days. Plants don’t last forever, and sometimes a once-over of your landscape design that includes removing old plants and planting new ones can give your home a completely new look or can even give your home a similar look to some of those new homes in Kent that you’ve driven by repeatedly and always admired.

These are just a few simple home repair and remodeling projects that you can tackle on your own to improve the look and functionality of your outdoor spaces. There are many other projects that you can take on without having to hire a home repair and remodeling professional contractor. All you have to do is to do some research on how to do anything you’re not quite sure about, make sure you have the right tools and some help, if necessary, and keep the tasks relatively small and simple until you have the confidence to be able to take on larger home repair and remodeling projects with ease.

Outdoor carpet tiles have many uses around the exterior of your home, and can be equally at home in some indoor spaces as well. Outdoor carpet tiles can be installed anywhere from around a pool deck or on a covered patio to within a garage or outdoor gazebo. You can also install outdoor carpet tiles in a basement, laundry room, sunroom, or on any concrete slab that could use some color and a softer surface underfoot. You can even install them on a boat! One of the biggest assets to using outdoor carpet tiles is that they provide a versatile, non-slip surface that is easily installed and that can add an interesting design element to an otherwise boring space.

Types of Outdoor Carpet Tiles

When it comes to choosing outdoor carpet tiles, you have more selection than you may think! Here are some of your options:

Self-adhesive outdoor carpet tiles – These are individual squares of carpet made from materials that are moisture and weather proof. They have a self-stick adhesive back, making installation a breeze. All that you need to do during installation is to pull off the backing to expose the self-stick adhesive and you’re ready to adhere them to any solid surface.

Interlocking outdoor carpet tiles – One way to get a truly tight fitting look is to use interlocking outdoor carpet tiles. Since the edges of one tile interlock with the edges of the adjoining tile, you don’t have to worry as much about the tiles separating as they are exposed to the weather or as they withstand normal wear and tear. Most interlocking tiles also don’t require adhesive during installation.

Interlocking floating outdoor carpet tiles – If you are interested in installing outdoor carpeting tiles in areas that are prone to water or moisture, such as near a pool or a moisture-prone porch or deck, then floating outdoor carpet tiles are the best choice. These tiles are slightly elevated so that the outdoor carpeting material is raised from the floor, allowing water to run beneath without damaging the carpet. Most outdoor interlocking floating carpet tiles do not require any adhesive and simply lock together to create a durable and non-slip surface.

Indoor outdoor carpet tiles – If you are looking to install carpet tiles on a covered porch, in a sunroom, in a garage or basement, you may want to consider indoor outdoor carpet tiles. These can be used, as the name implies, both indoors and outdoors, but are made to withstand outdoor weather elements if necessary.

Installing Outdoor Carpet Tiles

One of the great things about opting for outdoor carpet tiles rather than outdoor carpeting is the ease of installation. Outdoor carpet tiles offer an easy DIY installation project and the project can be completed rather quickly. Here’s what you need to do:

Measure the area in which you will be installing outdoor carpet tiles to determine how many you need. You should estimate around 10% for waste. If you are dealing with an intricate pattern that has to be perfectly matched, or intricate cuts that will need to be made, you may need a little more than that.

Thoroughly clean the area on which you will be laying the outdoor carpet tiles. Make sure that all debris is removed and remove any caked on debris or mold. Then let thoroughly dry.

Do a “dry run” of your carpet tile design. Lay the outdoor carpet tiles out in the pattern that you would like to make sure that they look the way you want them to look and to ensure they will fit in the allocated space. Then find the midpoint of the area and mark it well. You will begin installing your tiles from this point and work your way out. You should also draw some guidelines to make sure you stay on track and keep things straight and level.

Begin your installation. Starting with the center tile, lay a full outdoor carpet tile in the area that you had previously marked off. If you are using self adhesive outdoor carpet tiles, you’ll first have to peel the back covering off to expose the adhesive. If you using interlocking outdoor carpet tiles, you won’t have to worry about adhesive and will click each adjoining tile together with the one next to it. Otherwise, you will need to apply a small bit of adhesive to each corner and to the middle of each outdoor carpet tile before you press it firmly in place.

Continue with all full tiles. Keep laying your outdoor carpet tiles until you have covered the area with all full tiles. Periodically check your guidelines to make sure that your tiles are being installed in a straight line and are pressed firmly against one another.

Cut edges and borders. When you get to the edges, you may need to make some cuts to finish off your outdoor carpet tile installation or you may wish to install an outdoor carpet tile border, possibly in a coordinating color or pattern, to finish off the carpet area. This can make your carpet look like an outdoor rug and can make a great design statement under some well placed outdoor dining furniture or other outdoor patio furniture. Most outdoor carpet tiles can easily be cut with a straight edge blade.

Replacing Outdoor Carpet Tiles

Most indoor outdoor carpet tiles are made in such a way as to withstand a good deal of heavy traffic and constant exposure to the weather. Even so, you may find that over time your outdoor carpet tiles can use replacement, whether due to fading from the sun, too much moisture or a stain that just won’t come out. When that does happen, however, you don’t need to fret because replacing outdoor carpet tiles is a snap! All you need to do is to pop out the old tile and put in a new one! If there is an adhesive backing, care should be taken to gently pry the adhesive off the floor beneath so the new tile can lay flat. If the tiles are interlocking, care needs to be taken when removing the old tile from the adjoining tiles so they are not disturbed. It is a good idea to keep a few extra outdoor carpet tiles around in case you need to replace one or a few down the road. This way, you will not be scrambling to find a matching tile.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to spruce up your backyard or garden, installing some cheap paving slabs on your own may be just the way to go. If you can find some cheap paving slabs for sale, you can easily turn an open area into an interesting patio or sitting area, or you can create a meandering pathway among your flowers or lawn. So here lies the problem – where do you buy cheap paving slabs?

The secret to finding cheap patio paving slabs that won’t cost you an arm and a leg is a little flexibility on your part. If you are willing to compromise a bit on color, texture and size – and you are willing to do some leg work to find what you need – you may be able to find some paving slabs cheaply – or at least more cheaply than what it would cost you if you paid full price. Once you’ve found the discounted slabs, the key is to do your own installation to keep the cost of installing paving slabs cheap as well.

Where to Find Cheap Paving Slabs

Ask about sales – The best place to begin your search for cheap paving slabs is to go to a masonry or landscape supply company that specializes in selling slabs. Find out if they have any particular type of slabs on sale that are cheaper than usual and see if you like those. Sometimes if suppliers have an abundance of inventory or have a particular style that is not selling well, they’ll discount that particular style to move it more quickly.

Collect scrap – If you are only covering a small area, such as an area around a garden fountain or a small walkway through your garden, you may be able to piece together your paved area cheaply by collecting scrap pieces of patio paving slabs and then creating an interesting pattern with the different pieces you find. Ask if there are broken pieces of paving slabs that can no longer be sold and see whether you can get them for free or if you can buy the broken patio slabs cheaply. You may have to go to a number of different paving slab suppliers, but if you can collect a few pieces from each, you will quickly have some cheap paving slabs that you can turn into an interesting and eye-catching design. Just lay the mismatched slabs out to create an interesting pattern before installing them. You may want to break bigger pieces down even more to create a look that more closely resembles natural stone – especially if some slabs are much larger than others.

Ask friends, relatives and neighbors for surplus – If you know people that recently installed their own patio or walkway, you can ask if they have any surplus paving slabs that you can either have for free or that you can buy from them cheaply. Patio slabs given to you by people you know may be the cheapest, since they are often just extras lying around taking up room and people are happy to part with them, so they may not even cost you anything.

Shop off-season – Walkway and patio paving slabs, and any other type of products that are meant for outdoors, will typically be more expensive in the spring and summer, when homeowners run out to do all types of outdoor projects. Some products will then be discounted in the fall to reduce inventory before the winter season rolls in. If you are not in a rush to get your project done, you may be able to find some cheap paving slabs for sale during the end of the fall season or beginning of the winter. You’ll still usually have time to complete your project before the ground gets too hard and frozen. Otherwise, you can store the slabs until spring when you’re ready to install them.

There are numerous uses for indoor outdoor carpet. As the name implies, this type of carpeting can be used indoors or outdoors. Primarily, however, indoor outdoor carpet is used in an exterior setting due to the fact that it is made to withstand conditions that are not often found indoors (like contact with moisture and constant sun exposure). For indoor use, there are many more options of indoor carpeting that will provide a more attractive look at lower prices, although there are certainly instances where indoor outdoor carpeting works well indoors. Indoor outdoor carpeting is a great option for any area that is either completely exposed to the outdoor elements, is in a transitional location between exterior and interior spaces, or is in a location prone to moisture.

Where To Use Indoor Outdoor Carpet?

As mentioned, there are many places that indoor outdoor carpet can be used. Here are some of the more common uses:

Patios

Porches

Sunrooms

Decks

Boats

Pool surrounds

Garages

Interior surfaces that may be damp, such as basements or laundry rooms

What Is Indoor Outdoor Carpet?

Indoor outdoor carpet is made of synthetic fibers and backing materials that are specially formulated so that they are resistant to moisture. This allows them to function well outdoors, since there is almost always some type of moisture that the flooring will encounter. Most indoor outdoor carpeting will also be treated to resist fading from exposure to the sun or will be made from UV-resistant fibers. Quality indoor outdoor carpets should also be stain resistant and should be easy to clean. For constant exposure to moisture, marine backing should be chosen.

What Types of Indoor Outdoor Carpet Are Available?

There are many types of indoor outdoor carpet for sale these days. Long thought of as a plastic-looking, green grassy surface that looked cheap and felt uncomfortable, indoor outdoor carpeting has since come a long way. While you can still find indoor outdoor carpeting that looks like green grass, there are many other options as well. These include:

Berber indoor outdoor carpet

Loop indoor outdoor carpet

Plush indoor outdoor carpet

Marine carpet

Indoor outdoor rugs

Indoor outdoor carpet comes in a wide variety of colors, thicknesses, styles and quality. For those looking to cover just a small surface, the carpet can also be bound on the edges so it functions more like an area rug, or you can find indoor outdoor rugs that can be used just about anywhere.

How Is Indoor Outdoor Carpet Installed?

Indoor outdoor carpet installation is relatively easy, at least in comparison to typical indoor carpet installation. You can choose to install indoor outdoor carpet using an adhesive material or double-sided tape (made for carpet installation). Either way, the carpet should be installed on a smooth, finished surface that is clean and level. The carpet should be rolled out in the area where it is to be installed and should be allowed to sit for a short time (an hour or so is fine) to allow it to acclimate to the environment. Then the carpet can be cut to size, the adhesive or double-sided tape laid on the underlying surface, and the carpet carefully laid on top. A heavy carpet roller should be used to permanently secure the indoor outdoor carpet to the adhesive and to smooth out any bumps or ridges. If permanent installation is not desired, this step may not be necessary.

Indoor outdoor carpeting does not have to be permanently secured and can just be laid down in any area desired. It is a good idea, however, to make sure that the carpet will not slip or move, so double sided adhesive tape or a non-slip indoor outdoor carpet pad should be placed underneath to keep the carpet securely in place. Also be sure that the edges are firmly in place so they do not roll up. This can result in a tripping hazard and will also make it more likely that the carpet fibers will begin to unravel.

For those looking to maximize their living space and make the most of enjoying the outdoors from within, a lean to conservatory can be the answer. Lean to conservatories are named as such because they in essence “lean” against the side of the house. The style of these structures was initially derived from greenhouses that were constructed up against the side of a home. What does this mean to you as a homeowner? It means that building a lean to conservatory will be easier and more cost effective than if you had to build a standalone structure. In fact, a lean to conservatory is probably the least expensive option you will find when it comes to choosing a conservatory or sunroom for your home.

Lean to Conservatory Size and Shape:

You can buy a lean to conservatory in a wide variety of sizes and most are either rectangular or square in shape. The most popular shape for lean to conservatories is rectangular, taking full advantage of the length of a home’s wall without jutting out too much into the property surrounding the house. A lean to conservatory uses one exterior wall of the house as one of the walls of the conservatory, so there is less to build and it is easier to properly anchor the structure in place.

Lean to Conservatory Roof Options:

The most common roof style on a lean to conservatory is a simple sloped roof with a solid finish. This allows water to easily drain off of the lean to conservatory roof and into a guttering system that runs along the roof long and down the side corner of the walls. Some manufacturers offer the option to upgrade to a glass lean to conservatory roof, making it even more open looking and also making it useful to use a lean to conservatory as a greenhouse or sunroom.

Lean to Conservatory Material Choices:

You also have a great many options as to the material used to construct lean to conservatories. Many lean to conservatories are made from aluminum or metal framing, and have a polycarbonate material to finish off the roof and exterior walls. You can also buy a lean to conservatory that has glass on the roof. Of course, a primary feature of a lean to conservatory is its many windows, so there are wide expanses of glass within the framing of the structure.

Building a Lean To Conservatory:

For those looking to tackle a DIY lean to conservatory project, there are plans and information available to help with the building process. Although a bit more costly, but not nearly as expensive as having a professionally built lean to conservatory, utilizing a lean to conservatory kit is a great option for the do-it-yourselfer. DIY lean to conservatory kits come complete with all of the materials needed to fully assemble a specific style of structure, and they also include step by step instructions on how to build a lean to conservatory with the materials provided. This takes most of the guess work out of what materials to buy, how to properly size and cut, what order the structure should be built in, and so on. Lean to conservatory kits are a popular way to build a lean to conservatory on a budget but have a professional quality structure when you are finished.

Other Benefits of a Lean To Conservatory:

One benefit to building a lean to conservatory is that due to its proximity to the house, it is relatively easy to run electrical and HVAC into the new living space. This can greatly reduce the cost, because when new electrical and HVAC lines need to be installed in a structure, it can get pretty expensive, but tapping into the existing lines from the main house and extending them out to the new lean to conservatory is a much easier process. The interior space will also take less energy to heat or cool because it will benefit from the temperature in the adjoining house.

Lean to Conservatory Prices:

Prices of lean to conservatories will vary based on the size and style of the structure, the materials used to build the structure, and whether it has a glass or solid roof. Prices of lean to conservatory kits will be lower than having a professionally built lean to conservatory, but will cost more than if you build the structure on your own starting with the raw materials (but this is a much more difficult process). If you are in the market to buy a lean to conservatory kit or have one built for you, it is best to do your homework and shop around a bit because different companies and manufacturers will offer different pricing. It is also a good idea to inquire about sales on lean to conservatories or special discounts to see if you can save some money on your purchase.

The old adage “good things come in small packages” is very apt when speaking of protecting your home from damages. Minor details, often overlooked, are usually the ones that provide the greatest payoff in the future. This is certainly the case with gutters.

A guttering system includes the trough-like attachments found on the edge of a home’s roof that are designed to collect and direct water away from the vital sections of the house. It is ordinarily constructed from galvanized or cast iron, plastic or vinyl, copper, aluminum, metal or wood. Plastic gutters are recognized as some of the most widely used in homes due to their relatively low cost, low maintenance requirements and durability.

To determine the best guttering system to meet your requirements, it is helpful to familiarize yourself with the pluses and minuses of different kinds you can choose from.

The earliest forms of gutters were made out of wood. These have slowly lost their appeal because of their susceptibility to rotting. Nowadays, the most commonly seen guttering found at homes are plastic gutters. Aluminum gutters are also popular, although they require a bit more maintenance and cost more. Copper gutters are expensive, and although they add to the appeal of some home styles, they are not for everyone.

Usually a plastic gutter is made out of vinyl or some type of plastic composite. They are the most prevalently used gutters by homeowners due to several factors.

First, plastic rain gutters are easily sourced online or at your local home improvement stores. They can be bought in practical kits that come with simple do-it-yourself instructions that eliminate the need to hire professionals. Gutters made of aluminum, copper and galvanized or cast iron may require skilled handling.

Second, plastic gutters are comparatively more affordable than copper and cast iron or steel, or even aluminum. This cost difference can really add up when you are guttering your whole house.

Another great advantage of using a plastic rain gutter is its uncomplicated upkeep. Unlike gutters made out of metal or alloys, they are not subject to rust or oxidation. If not appropriately cared for, the most common setback encountered in the use of plastic gutters are cracks or breaks caused by extreme environments. This can easily be solved with the application of a sealant or glue. Use of plastic gutters may not be a wise choice in locations prone to extreme temperature fluctuations, however.

Plastic rain gutters are composed of several basic components, including the gutter sections, downspouts, splash blocks and elbows. The gutter section is a sloped piece of tube or canal that directs water from the edge of the roof to the downspouts in order to drain. The downspout or down pipe is the vertical section of the gutter where water flows to a drain or splash block and then runs off away from the house. The splash block, also known as the downspout extension, is located at the end of the downspout and keeps water from pooling near the foundation. Lastly, the elbow is a curved or angled gutter piece used to join sections at corners or bends.

If you are installing plastic gutters yourself, you can either buy all of the pieces separately, or you can buy them as a kit, which is easier. Once you have purchased a plastic gutter kit, you’ll then have to assemble all of the components together and attach them to the edges of your roof and sides of your home.

Before you do this, make sure that you have the proper tools and gear ready. Basic tools you will need to install your plastic gutters include the following:

• Ladder
• Tape measure
• Chalk line
• String and carpenter’s levels
• Power drill and screwdriver bits
• Fine tooth hacksaw
• Galvanized screws
• Vinyl or plastic gutters, hangers, connectors, elbows, downspouts, drop outlets, corners

The next steps simply involve following the directions in your manufacturer’s manual which comes with your plastic gutter kit. Make sure the proper angles are used so that water naturally runs down into the downspouts, and make sure the gutters and downspouts are all secured to the house properly.

Once installed, plastic gutters can typically endure up to 10 years or more, or even for the life of your house, if properly cared for. But this requires regular care and maintenance that is frequently overlooked because of the time and effort it takes. Fortunately plastic rain gutters entail lower maintenance to keep them working properly than other gutter types.

Just follow a few simple tips to keep your new plastic gutters working optimally. First, clean your gutters twice a year, ideally during spring or fall. Regular gutter cleaning is important, no matter what type of gutters you have. Second, check for sagging, water pooling under gutters, flooding or leaks, damages on paint siding, trim or house shutters (which would indicate that water is running down the side of the house) and clogged downspouts. Since you are using plastic or vinyl gutters, you shouldn’t have a problem with rust, but if you are using metal screws or attachments, you may have to check for rust there. Third, remove any loose debris using a hose or if necessary a plumber’s snake. If it the debris becomes unmanageable, you might want to consider installing a screen or plastic gutter guards. If you continually find that your gutters are becoming a home for local birds to nest in, you may want to install some plastic bird spikes right along the edge of the gutters to keep birds out and stop their nests from blocking the flow of water in your gutters.

Always make sure that you have the right tools and gear during the maintenance of your plastic gutters. You will need a ladder, gloves, a garbage can or heavy-duty trash bag, a garden hose, safety glasses and a garden trowel for your gutter cleaning tasks. Make sure to secure your ladder on an even surface and keep it securely against the roof. As an added precaution, always try to work with a partner.

There are numerous options when it comes to choosing a guttering system for your house, but plastic gutters have quite a few benefits, including low cost, low maintenance and ease of installation. All reasons that make a plastic gutter system one of the most popular types chosen by homeowners today.

Aside from plants, patio paving is one of the most important elements that can set the mood and rhythm of your outdoor design. There are many materials that can be used in paving your patio. Among them are bricks, natural stone, concrete and concrete blocks, manufactured patio pavers, patio slabs, and more. Each has its own distinct characteristics, but all of them come in various designs, colors and textures so you have many options to choose from.

Patio paving can be one of the most expensive items in your landscaping budget, so it is wise to consider carefully and prepare well before starting any patio paving design and installation project.

First think about the location and purpose of the area you want to pave. Will it be a small patio made to house just a few chairs, a large expanse that will include an outdoor kitchen along with some outdoor dining furniture, a patio surrounding an inground pool area or a meandering garden path? This will help identify the type of patio pavers you should use. Natural stones, for example, are not ideal for compression sensitive areas or those areas that get tremendous amounts of wear and tear. Patio paving stones, on the other hand, can be made from most kinds of stone – cast, natural or reconstituted – and are ideal for almost all applications and are more durable.

A natural patio paving stone is quarried and can be scaled into various sizes and shapes for different pattern layouts. Sandstone, slate, granite and limestone are some of the most common of the natural patio paving materials used. Travertine tiles can also be used in some climates. All of these natural materials are strong enough to last and to withstand hard use.

Cast patio pavers are made of concrete, clay or reconstituted stone. Reconstituted stones are a mixture of concrete and stones and are less expensive than natural stones. They are easy to install and are less prone to cracking, but they offer a bit less creativity and natural design. There are other patio paving materials as well, such as brick, concrete blocks, stamped concrete, and patio paving slabs, to choose from as well.

Making sure that the materials you choose blend well with the other design elements in your backyard or garden is very important. Cost is another consideration in the selection of materials for patio paving. For garden patio paving, gravel is an inexpensive option but needs considerable weed maintenance, sometimes even requiring a regular weed control service to keep things looking good. Concrete requires some skill and special equipment for proper installation but can still be cheaper than natural stone, and if you opt for stamped concrete, it can offer the same basic look. Patio paving slabs can be more economical than individual stones, bricks or blocks. Brick, tile, granite and other natural stones are very decorative, but are more expensive patio paving options. Block paving is another pricey option but gives you lots of versatility in design.

After choosing the best patio paving material, draw up a plan for what you want your finished patio to look like. This will save you time, money and effort. Your plan will help determine the sizing of the finished space, the pattern of the materials, the amount of materials needed and any patio paving equipment required to properly complete the job.

Once you’ve decided on your patio design and materials, you then need to decide whether you will do the installation yourself or will hire a professional. If you are hiring a patio paving contractor, make sure to only hire accredited contractors. You should get at least 3 quotes to price out the job and should ask for references. Conduct an inspection of their previous work, or better yet, ask your friends and neighbors for referrals. If you are opting for a DIY patio paving job instead, make sure you understand all aspects of the job, have the proper tools needed (you can rent some if you don’t have them) and follow proper safety precautions when operating any tools or equipment. Patio paving is not an easy job, so be sure that you are ready to tackle the task on your own.

Once you have completed your patio, you then have to consider some regular maintenance of it to keep it looking its best. What you need to do will depend on what type of patio paving material you have chosen. If you opted for individual patio pavers or bricks, you may have to continuously keep up with weed growth between the cracks. Some patio paving materials require sealers to keep the patio looking its best. Some paving choices require virtually no maintenance at all other than an occasional cleaning.

No matter what materials you choose, you will need to keep your paved patio clean. This typically requires just a spray of the garden hose. Most patio paving materials cannot withstand the force of a high powered pressure washer, so take care in using them or don’t use them at all. Some paving materials can use a periodic scrubbing with a mild soap to remove stains, dirt or mildew.

Installing a new patio, pool surround, or walkway in your garden area is a major home improvement project and one that comes with many options – as well as large expenses. With so many patio paving options available, however, it is fairly simple to find a look you like while remaining within a specified budget. Just take the time to look at examples of other patios to decide what you like best, what fits well with the rest of your backyard and garden décor, and what materials will hold up best in the climate in which you live. By doing a bit of homework up front, you should be able to enjoy your new patio for many years to come.

If you have redwood outdoor furniture, sooner or later you’re going to have to make a decision about whether to do a diy home repair project or replace a damaged or broken piece. There are several factors you must take into consideration before you make that call. Redwood is a very beautiful and durable wood, but sooner or later, you’re still going to have to deal with what to do with redwood furniture that has seen better days.

One of the biggest difficulties in deciding what to do with damaged redwood furniture is how to match the stain on the furniture. Although there are many types of wood stains on the market, it’s been my experience that it’s generally hard to match a redwood stain well. This makes making a decision on repair or replacing damaged redwood even harder. Below are a few tips on redwood furniture repair so you can decide if it is a task worth tackling for your own outdoor furniture, or whether you should just skip the effort and head to a store to buy new redwood furniture.

Cracks, dings and small breaks can be repaired rather easily. Just remember, if you use glue to make such repairs, do not use yellow glue, because it’s not waterproof. Instead, use epoxy or glue specifically designed for outside use.

I’ve used wood putty and bond to successfully repair redwood furniture, but I prefer to use it in a place that is not readily seen in case the stain doesn’t match. I haven’t had this happen often, and in reality it’s nearly impossible to always hide a repair, so make sure you get as close as possible in matching putty or stain to the wood you’re repairing.

It’s also a good idea to wash all stain off the wood thoroughly. If you don’t, you stand to have redwood stains on your deck or patio from the excess stain washing off during a good rain. You should also wash off new redwood furniture just for this reason. It can save you a lot of frustration down the line, and a lot of headaches when you have to fix up your deck or patio from the transferred stain.

If the piece of furniture you’re trying to repair is heavily damaged, it may be cheaper to just go ahead and replace it. Just make sure the new redwood furniture matches the older pieces, unless you are replacing the entire set at once. This can be very difficult to do if you happen to have older redwood furniture, but it is possible if you look around enough. Otherwise, find a contrasting piece of furniture that will look good with your existing patio or outdoor dining furniture, rather than putting a new and old piece of furniture together side by side that just look like what they are – a new and old piece of furniture that really don’t go together well.

Most redwood furniture will be strong and durable and will last for many years of outdoor use. But like any other type of wood furniture, or any outdoor furniture for that matter, there will probably come a time when you need to decide whether to repair your redwood furniture, or replace it. After reading a few of these tips, hopefully your decision will be an easier one to make.

Do you want the landscaping in the front and back of your home to look as if you have put an immense amount of effort into it, without actually having to do much work? This is completely understandable, as being able to have an awesome landscape without having to put so much time and effort into it is just about every homeowner’s dream. A lot of amateur landscapers believe that nothing can be done to speed up the process of having a pristine lawn and lush, vibrant landscaping, and they begrudgingly go through the motions just so they can have that sweet, final result. If, however, you just want the result without all the hard work, then here are a couple of landscaping and gardening tips that anybody can utilize to increase the quality of their landscape, while reducing the amount of work that must be put into it.

Watering your landscape is one of the most time consuming things you can do. This is because different parts of the lawn and garden need to be watered at separate times, so you have to come out at multiple intervals in order to do this. You have to move the sprinklers and garden hoses around, take the time to give certain areas more water than others, and keep track of what’s been watered when, which can be a huge pain. To take this task off your hands, you should do what the movie Terminator always advised you against, and that is leave it to the machines. There are many automatic watering devices you can take advantage of that will release water at exactly the right time and in the correct amounts, both increasing efficiency and enabling you to stay completely hands-off of this otherwise time-consuming landscaping task.

The other critical component that plants need is food (air and sunlight you do not need to worry about – the latter your lawn and plants will get as long as they are outside in a decent location, and the former is everywhere). Food for the lawn, plants, trees, flowers and vegetables in your front yard, backyard and garden comes in the form of fertilizer, and you can administer it to your plants in one of two ways. Like watering, you can give your landscaping fertilizer at specific times, or you can just use a time-release fertilizer that slowly releases nutrients when needed. The second option is much easier because you add the fertilizer once and it continues to supply nutrients to your plants over a specified period of time, making your job easier to do.

These are two of the easiest ways to save time on your landscaping tasks, while still keeping the lawn and garden looking healthy and growing strong. Other ways to save some time on landscaping tasks generally involve using certain types of lawn tools and landscape supplies to make lawn maintenance and clean up quicker and easier to do, such as using using leaf sweepers or leaf vacuums for fall cleanup, using lawn detatching rakes to clean up the thatch in your grass quickly and easily so the grass grows stronger, using ride-on lawnmowers to cut the grass rather than push models, and just generally having an arsenal of garden tools at your disposal (as well as a garden tool rack or other garden tool organizer so you always know where they are when you need them!), so that you have what you need to get small jobs done easily. By doing this, your small landscaping tasks won’t turn into big jobs that require a lot more time and effort to tackle.

Outdoor wooden playhouses are every child’s dream. Back in your childhood days, you might have found yourself wishing for such a sanctuary – a secret place that you could call your own. If you had an outdoor wooden playhouse, you probably remember that the day your father (or mother!) succeeded in building your fortress was one of the most remarkable and exciting times of your life. After all, it signified the establishment of your new imaginary kingdom and the end of your seemingly mundane playing days. That memory of you taking one small careful step at a time before reaching the threshold of your refuge and fearlessly looking down on everything around you are probably precious recollections that will forever be ingrained in your memory.

Now, as a grown man or woman with a family of your own, why not indulge your children with the same pleasurable experience that you had years ago? Go and be the cool parent that you have always wanted to be and build your child an outside playhouse based on the features they would like most. Skip the pre-made outdoor wooden playhouse kits for sale in many stores, and instead set off on a journey of making a homemade wooden playhouse on your own from scratch. Doing so provides multiple benefits over simply assembling commercial wooden playhouse kits.

Save Money

For a practical parent, the most obvious advantage of building your own outdoor wooden playhouse is the expense that will be incurred in making one from scratch compared to buying a fully assembled wooden playhouse, or even a playhouse kit that you assemble yourself. Home-made playhouses can save you a great deal of money because a lot of the materials can be bought at a cheaper price. Since you’re not paying for convenience, or the labor involved in buying a pre-made outdoor playhouse, you can save quite a bit of money in the process.

Superior Quality

Chances are that the materials that you will purchase are superior to what is included in most outdoor wooden playhouse kits. You can choose the best quality materials so they will look good and will last for many years, and you can do so while still saving money compared to the cost of a pre-assembled playhouse or a playhouse kit. You can also pick and choose materials to get exactly the look and functionality that you want.

Extra Accessories

If you want to splurge on your project after having bought all of the essential parts of the wood outdoor playhouse, you can use the remaining savings to buy additional accessories for the structure. Also, if you are a bit unsure of your carpentry skills and things go awry, then you will still have money available if you need a bit of professional construction help or need the structure repaired or modified (just make sure the finished outdoor playhouse is safe and secure before allowing children to play on it).

Monetary concerns aside, building your child’s outdoor playhouse on your own will give you the benefit of spending quality time with your family. At the same time, you can show them that they truly matter by making a huge effort for them and creating something wonderful with your bare hands. Your kids will surely appreciate your gesture knowing that their sanctuary is a product of your sweat and love, and not just some outdoor wooden playhouses bought at a store and built by others. And their appreciation of your efforts, as well as the memories that you will provide to your children, may in fact be the best benefits of all.

It is true that for centuries, mankind has called the fireplace a home. Nowadays, folks just love the warmth and the ambiance that the hearth gives, and they often want to bring it outside their homes. There’s a plethora of ready-made outdoor fire pit designs available today for purchase, but building your own brings more personal pride than purchasing one. When you decide on a DIY firepit project, you are almost limitless to the design and material options you can choose from. And besides, usually when you build your own firepit, it costs less than buying a pre-fabricated model.

Below is a step by step procedure on how to build a fire pit in your backyard:

Before you start digging in your backyard or garden, first check the local codes in your community to see if any of them will affect building outdoor fire pits. Areas which are prone to brush fires may have more stringent policies. The other thing you have to do before you get started is to decide on the materials to use for your firepit and prepare the tools needed, and of course, finalize the fire pit design. Once you’ve got those steps taken care of, you are then ready to build your dream outdoor fire pit. If you have decided to make a basic round stone or brick fire pit, read on for more information about how to get this done.

Here is a basic step by step guide on how to build an outdoor brick or stone fire pit: (note: this guide is for a round fire pit but you can also follow this to build a square fire pit as well, or almost any shape for that matter)

After you have decided the location for your fire pit, which is assumed to be away from trees, overhanging branches or powerlines, lay out the outside boundary of the fire pit by making a circle on the ground.

Mark out another circle inside the first circle and use this as a guide to dig out a trench that is 4 to 6 inches deep. Make sure the trench base is fairly level.

Mix concrete with water until its consistency becomes spreadable but not runny. Spread the mixture into the trench until it is about an inch thick. Leave the inner circle to allow drainage.

Pour gravel on the wet mixture and push the gravel stones down until they are covered by cement. This will provide support and prevent cracking during weather changes.

Allow the concrete to set fully. This will serve as the base of the fire pit.

Now you are ready to build up the walls of the fire pit. Set the first brick or stone on the concreted circle, and then set the next brick or stone adjacent to it on a slight angle to follow the circle, until the first row is completed. Make sure the subsequent bricks have a neat mound of mortar adhered to their sides to avoid gaps.

Go to the next layer of face stones. You can make your imagination work here and stack the layers artistically like putting puzzle pieces. Just make sure to avoid weak points.

Fill the fire pit with 6 inches of gravel. This will support the first two rows as they set up.

As your fire pit builds up, check the height of the fire pit to know if you have reached the desired height before adding subsequent layers.

When you have reached the desired height, set the capstones or the flat stones which will make the top of your stone fire pit. Capstones can be cap pieces or blocks.

Now you have an outdoor fire pit where you can enjoy grilling with family and friends during the day or to keep you warm in the cool summer nights. No matter what the intended use of your new fire pit is and what fire pit design and materials you choose to go with, just make sure that how you build a fire pit is based on keeping things safe, both during the construction process as well as when the fire pit is used. This is the most important aspect of fire pit construction advice possible.

Are you tired of seeing the same old garden pots used in every single garden in your neighborhood? Well, if so, you are not alone. After all, who wants to be just like everybody else and have the same thing as the people next door in their front yard, backyard or garden? If you are looking for something a little different that can set your yard apart, then it’s time to turn your attention to using some alternative garden pots for your garden.

What exactly is an alternative garden pot? It is not a new product fad on the market – garden pot alternatives can be almost any type of object that is sturdy enough to hold some soil and a few flowers or plants, and that looks good doing the job. Now, all you really need to do is to think outside of the box, use a bit of your imagination, and be as creative as you can. In fact, you need not even purchase anything, because the things that you have at home could very well become a great alternative for the common garden pot.

Here are a few ideas that you may want to consider using as alternatives to garden pots in order to help you get started:

Paint Cans – Most people have old paint cans in their garages that are simply taking up space and gathering dust. So why not make them useful and turn them into a garden pot or two? First off, you have to clean them very well. If there are any dried up paint residues inside the can, make sure that you scrape those off. Once it’s all nice and clean, you have to punch several holes at the bottom and sides of the can. This should let the excess water out whenever you’re watering the plants. And voila! You now have alternative garden pots that didn’t even cost you a dime. If you like the look of paint cans holding your flowers (and they do look cute!), but are concerned about any residue paint left over in the ones you have in your garage, you can purchase a few inexpensive empty paint cans at the home improvement store and either leave them as-is, or dress up the exterior of the can to add a bit more interest to your new garden pot alternative.

Old Wooden Boxes – Have you got a few old wood boxes lying around? Well, if you do, then it’s time to put them to good use. All you really need to do is clean them up, check if they’re still sturdy enough to hold in the soil and you’re good to go. If there are no openings on the bottom of the box, you’ll also have to drill a few holes in them for water drainage. You can paint, stain or seal the wood to give it a nicer look and to protect the wood a bit, but you can also opt to keep the boxes in their natural wooden state.

Wheelbarrows - An old wheelbarrow can make a great garden planter if you’re no longer using it to lug items around the yard. Again, all it needs is a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom and you can fill the space with soil and a few flowers or even make a whole herb garden.

Needless to say, when it comes to finding alternative garden pots, all you really need is do is put your imagination to work. Almost any object that can hold some soil and can have a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom can work as a place to grow some plants, flowers, or herbs. In fact, designing your own garden pot can become a fun project for the whole family to enjoy, so do consider getting everyone’s input.

In our modern current economic climate, making any significant purchases requires a lot of forethought and consideration. As a result, many are trying to find ways to reduce their costs for various home-related projects, not the least of which includes housing their vehicles. A unit like a carport is a less expensive option than building a complete garage if vehicular storage space is what is needed. One of the most economical ways in which people have been able to build this type of storage for their vehicles is with the use of prefabricated carport kits.

Carport kits can be purchased in a variety of different materials, but steel is one of the most popular options. One of the main benefits of using steel carport kits is the fact that you can even save money if you have to hire someone to build you a more substantial model than the portable carports available on the market. This is due to the fact that even if you do have to get some sort of contractor or tradesmen to assemble your carport for you, you’ll still save money as opposed to having the unit delivered to you already assembled, which is extremely costly, or having a contractor build a custom carport for you from scratch.

Another benefit of steel carport kits is that if you do know enough about how to assemble a carport and don’t need to hire a professional, having a kit to put together is much easier than having to start with a set of carport plans, buying all the materials on your own, and then figuring out how to assemble it all. And getting a steel carport kit is an economical choice because you’ll save not only on labor costs, but on your shipment costs as well, since the kits come shipped flat packed and don’t cost nearly as much to ship as assembled structures would cost (in fact, to get a fully assembled carport, you’d have to have it delivered from a local company and couldn’t just have it shipped through the mail, making your delivery costs higher and your options as to where to buy it from more limited).

Going with steel for your carport is a wise decision, due to its strength and durability. But, make sure that if you do go with this particular kind of alloy, that you go with galvanized steel. The reason for this is because galvanized steel tends to be much more weather resistant and resilient against the elements. This is because the coating which essentially makes galvanized steel what it is, is designed to be durable and weather proof so as to extend the life of your steel carport. That means that a galvanized steel carport is less likely to rust, corrode, or deteriorate over time.

Always remember to make sure that you get detailed specifications about the carport kit you are considering buying before making any purchase. Make sure that the size you order will fit the space that you have and that the other dimensions will fit your needs. You should also make sure to check with your local town or city ahead of time to ensure that you have the proper permits and adhere to any zoning restrictions prior to to installing your carport kit outside of your residence or business.

Steel carport kits are a relatively easy way to construct a solid, durable, and weather resistant protective structure for vehicle storage that will be more economical than many other options. Whether you decide to build the carport yourself using the kit, or you still hire a professional to build the carport for you, using a carport kit can save you money, time, and lots of headaches.

Driveway lights are an excellent way of lighting up your property and making it easier to navigate up and down your driveway so you don’t run into any unwanted objects. Adding lights can also help to make your driveway much more decorative, especially if you put the lights in the right places. Installing driveway lighting isn’t very difficult, but you will need the right set of tools and materials to get it done. Some experience in electrical work is also required, if you are installing electrical driveway lights, because you will have to perform tasks like laying wires and hooking them up to the main power source of the house.

First you will have to choose the driveway lights that you want. You should find something that will suit your driveway well and that you can afford. If you plan to install the system yourself, then you may need to pick a set up that is fairly simple to install and does not require complicated tasks – this can be done easily if you buy solar driveway lights or low voltage driveway lighting. Once you have purchased your driveway lights, make a sketch of the entire area so you can have an idea of where each of the lights needs to go.

One of your first tasks should be to take the packaging off the lights and put each of them in their proper location. Step back and take one last look,so you can be sure that they are all where you want them to be because they can be very difficult to move if you decide to change their location later. Once you have decided where the lights will go, then you can start by securing each of the lights in their place.

The next job should be to run the wiring. Make sure to be very careful when laying wires, and always turn off the electricity first. If you don’t have any previous experience with this line of work, you may need to hire a professional electrician or consult a knowledgeable friend for help – fooling around with electrical wires is not something that is recommended.

If you want to be sure that you can install driveway lighting on your own without the help of a professional or the possible risk that comes with working with electrical wiring, then you may want consider one of the many types of low voltage driveway lights that are on the market. While these lights still require some type of wiring that must be connected, the electrical current running through the wires is greatly reduced and does not carry with it the risk of electrical shock. Most of these lights also come as part of a low voltage driveway lighting kit, so you will have everything you need to properly install the lights all in one place.

Even easier to install, and friendlier to your utility bill, is solar driveway lighting. Since these lights work off a solar panel that is attached to the lights themselves, there is no wiring to run from light to light or to a power source, and all you need to do during installation is to decide where you are going to install the lights, secure them in the ground, and make sure the solar panel is in a location that will receive adequate sunlight.

Installing driveway lighting can be fairly simple or somewhat complicated, depending on the types of lights you are using and the location of those lights. But once your lights are properly installed, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of having lighting along your driveway for a long time to come.

Have you been noticing the various things that your neighbors are placing in their yards at different times of the year? There are numerous types of art found on many lawns these days, including those made from wood, metal, copper, and other materials. Wood yard art is very popular and is a great way to decorate your yard for different seasons, holidays, and special events that you will be having.

You can buy yard art at several different places, but another option that you may want to consider is making your own wood yard art. If you are someone who likes to do crafts projects or likes to work with wood to create different objects, you will be able to make your own art for your yard by getting a little bit of information to help.

You will want to locate a pattern that is relevant to the holiday, season, or event that you are celebrating in order to have the best look. You would not want to display a big wooden snowman out in your yard in the middle of summer, so make sure that you choose a pattern carefully so that it will fit with the situation and your intended look.

One thing that you will first need to get started is a few yard art patterns. You will need these patterns so that you will be able to trace them onto the wood that you are using and can then cut them out. There are a lot of different patterns that you can choose from when it comes to trying to find the right yard art to display around your home. You will be able to purchase some that are already made or you can simply find a pattern and make it yourself. If you are not artistic enough to draw your own pattern, you can ask someone that is good at drawing to draw the pattern for you. Another option is to find a picture or photo that you like and use a projector to cast a large shadow of the desired image onto the wood so that you can use that as a pattern to cut out your yard art.

Once you have decided on what pattern or image you will use, you can then use the pattern to cut out the wood into the desired shape. Once the wood is cut, the edges should be sanded to avoid rough spots and then the wood can be painted or stained to complete the image. It is also a good idea to coat any wood yard art with a sealer so that it can withstand the elements of the weather while it is outdoors. After the season or event is over, you should store your yard art in a dry location, such as in a garage or shed, until you are ready to use it again.

Yard art can add a fun and whimsical touch to your front yard or back yard or garden. And while there are numerous options available for purchase in a store, it is a fun project to make your own wood yard art and to be able to admire your creation each time you pull up to your own home.

Once the decision to install an outdoor fireplace has been made, the first question is always whether it should be a portable model or a built-in one. Naturally, built-in fireplaces require a significantly larger investment, but on the other hand, they offer far more freedom in choosing between different styles and designs. If you decide to go with a built-in fireplace, the next question is determining the right choice of building material.

Nearly all custom-built outdoor fireplaces are made of stone. Basically, there are three different types of stones available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages: simple natural stones like very coarse gravel, high-end natural stones like granite and marble, or cultured stone. You can also customize outdoor fireplaces with bricks, concrete and stucco finishes as well.

Simple natural stones mostly have an oval or slightly flat shape and are made up out of a mixture of stone types with large differences in color and texture. As the options for cutting them into specific shapes are limited, and they do not fit well into one another, any gaps between them must be filled with mortar, which usually requires the help of an experienced bricklayer.

Granite, marble or, for example, limestone offer a wide variety of colors and textures, as do travertine tiles. These stones can be cut into shape as desired in order to fit closely with each other. Naturally, they are very resistant to all kinds of weather and are very low maintenance. Of course, they are far more expensive than any other option, and their assembly requires some experience or the help of a professional. But the finished look of an outdoor fireplace made with some of these materials is unmatched.

The third option for outdoor fireplace construction is cultured stone. These are not actually real stones, but are cast from resin and are treated and finished to look like natural stone. Therefore, they can be made exactly according to your ideal of an outdoor fireplace – and they can even be made to look unlike any stones that exist in nature. Their low weight and specific features for easy assembly allow even inexperienced builders to construct a fireplace on their own.

When it comes to outdoor stone fireplaces, or any other type of custom built-in fireplace, there are many decisions to be made. Material choice is only one part of the equation, and you also have to decide about size, shape, and other details such as whether there will be a hearth, mantle, or log rack or what type of fireplace grates you will use, among other things. In order to find out which material option would be right for your individual fireplace needs and desires, the best idea is to actually go and see sample fireplaces made out of each of these types of stones before reaching a decision. You can also find numerous outdoor fireplace photos by searching online or looking through magazines or in books at home improvement stores.

No matter what type of material you choose for your outdoor fireplace, especially if you opt for a beautiful and upscale looking stone fireplace, you will be able to enjoy the luxury and warmth that this accessory can bring to your outdoor space and garden decor.

All homes, big or small, benefit from some outdoor space. But if you only have a small patch of grass or a walled concrete space just big enough to park your car, don’t despair. With some clever ideas you can turn even the smallest area of outdoor space into a relaxing retreat in which to enjoy the fresh air.

Potted plants are a great place to start if you don’t have a lot of space or your outside area is covered over with paving slabs or gravel. You can choose a style of pot to suit the theme you’re going for – anything from oriental bamboo to modern stainless steel. Garden pots can be moved easily, so it’s no problem to change things around a little for a different look or even to take your whole garden with you if you move to another house.

Garden water features are another handy trick that can liven up a dull space. Water features can easily be overlooked in a large garden unless they are very impressive, so a small garden is ideal for showing off a fountain or raised ponds. The sound of running water is very relaxing and adding a simple fountain, perhaps in a small garden pond over a natural looking arrangement of rocks, can greatly increase your enjoyment of the space.

Lighting is something that many people don’t even consider when planning their garden, but it can really transform your outdoor space into something magical at night. Consider using dim floor level lamps to mark out a pathway or putting fairy lights in a tree for a romantic atmosphere. Again, you have an advantage with a small space in that you don’t need to spend a lot on outside lighting to completely change the look of your garden.

It really only takes a creative imagination and a small amount of money to transform your small garden into a mini paradise, whether you stay simple with well-arranged potted plants or make things a bit more fancy with water features for the garden and special lighting. And the best thing is that with a little planning, your transformation can be complete within a weekend so you can just get out and enjoy!

Let’s agree that some gardeners have a thing for mixing the garden up. They know how to plant the pansies and the hydrangea, but they don’t shy away from the exotic plants either. These are the gardeners who like garden statues – who know that a good garden statue can set off the surrounding greenery like almost nothing else. Doesn’t matter if it’s a cheerful little cherub or a great big gargoyle. Garden statues rock.

And the only thing that improves on garden statues and can really make them even more interesting is building your own garden statue. That’s right – it’s not for the faint of heart – but DIY garden statues can be a lot of fun to build. Like many things, designing and building your own garden statuary can be as simple or as complicated as you like. The measure of success is in how much fun you have with the process – and not necessarily what the quality of the end result is.

Start by studying your garden. Exactly what type of statue is it looking for? Something abstract? Or maybe a human figure pining over the rose bushes? Do you want a large statue or a small one? What’s it going to call attention to – the garden statue itself or the plants nearby? Will the statue sit in front of any type of garden buildings or amongst the flowers, or will it sit out in the open on its own? What kind of pedestal will it need? Your garden design plan should readily accommodate your statue needs.

Once you know what the garden needs, it’s time to start brainstorming. Pull out some paper and a pen and get to work. Throw every image you can come up with down on paper. Don’t edit yourself – not at this stage. See what your brain is capable of and then pick something you like and begin to refine and narrow it. The more detail you have at this stage, the easier the subsequent stages will go.

The nuts and bolts work comes when you build the armature. This is a plywood and chicken wire frame that sort of acts as your statue’s skeleton. This will loosely approximate the final shape of the figure. Once it’s all set, begin to add the actual material of the sculpture. This can be plaster of paris, wax, or even concrete!

Once your garden statue is finished, then it’s time to decorate it. Again, your taste and enjoyment is all that matters. You can paint it any color you like – you can even slap a beach hat on it! Feel free to add jewels, shells or rocks to the finished statue to give that extra bit of pizzazz.

Then just sit back and enjoy your creation. While your own DIY garden statue may not be considered a work of art by some, it should bring you enjoyment each time you are sitting out in your garden and you look at your creative outlet and think to yourself, “I made that!” After all, aren’t garden statues just an outlet for someone’s self expression? If they happen to enhance your garden decor as well, then that should be considered an added bonus!

The decision to create a live butterfly garden means answering quite a few questions. What kind of flowers are you going to plant? What species of butterflies are likely to visit your garden? How often will you see them? And how can you encourage plenty of butterfly traffic?

These are good questions, and answering them thoughtfully and thoroughly will go a long way to ensuring a successful butterfly garden. The butterflies that are likely to show up will appreciate the care you take!

But, all of these questions really pale before the most significant question of all. And that one you really can’t answer quickly or simply. It’s this – how should a thoughtful gardener set about designing themselves a butterfly garden? How exactly do you plan a good layout?

Start by recognizing that butterflies and human beings aren’t the same species – not even close. So our idea of what constitutes a good garden is going to be quite a bit different. Humans like to see an orderly garden – the tulips in neat rows, the roses trimmed and neat. We like to feel a sense of control over the garden. You know, the hydrangea goes here and the dwarf apple tree goes there. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s important to keep in mind that Mother Nature doesn’t exactly share our preferences.

In fact, she approaches landscape design with order pretty much out of mind!

And that’s point one to keep in mind when it comes to designing a live butterfly garden. You want to create a habitat that mirrors the natural environment. It needs to be conducive to their wild nature.

Focus on brightly colored plants. Keep the same colors pretty much adjacent to one another. Plant some host plants – plants for butterflies to lay eggs on, such as alfalfa– as well as nectar plants for them to feed on. Don’t separate the host and nectar plants. Make it easy for your butterflies to emerge from their cocoons and start eating.

Even as you keep the colors roughly ordered, don’t be afraid to mix them at the same time. In other words, you can have a couple of bright yellow patches, one at the top of the garden and one at the bottom, if that’s what you want.

Avoid pesticides and insecticides at all costs. They can be fatal for butterflies.

It’s fine to plan your butterfly garden and not just leave it to “chance”. In fact, there are ways in which you have to plan. Which flowers and shrubs you are going to plant, for example, shouldn’t be a last minute or hasty decision. But when it comes to garden design, don’t be afraid to let your inclination for order get a little blown by the wind. Let it get ruffled a bit. Mother Nature does – and your butterfly visitors will appreciate the effort.

Conservatory blinds are some of the simplest type of blinds you can buy – or make. They can be found in shops, where you can choose from different shapes and patterns, or you can make your own conservatory blinds if you are looking to save a bit of money. The basic idea of a conservatory blind is simple - it is a roller shade that you can make out of any fabric or material that rolls down to provide protection from the sun or to provide privacy, and can be easily rolled up to enjoy the view to the outdoors.

Before you begin your DIY conservatory blinds project, you should first calculate the amount of material required, measuring the height and width of your window frames. Then you should add an additional 10% of extra material, and at least an extra 30cm in length, which will be required so you can arrange your conservatory blind around the roller mechanism and around the blind’s frame.

In addition, before you get started you will need to make sure you have a few different types of tools in order to make your job easier. Tools like a tape measure, some small blades, scissors, skins, a sewing machine, and glue or pastes will make your job easier to complete. You will also need some other materials including a kit for blinds, which contains a roll of wood or metal (for the roller mechanism) and some support brackets to attach the blinds to the wall or window frame, the fabric you will be using, and sewing thread.

To get started, you should first fix the support, which you will find in your conservatory blinds kit, to the wall or window frame following the manufacturer’s instructions. It is very possible that the roller kit may not fit the window exactly, so you need to measure the distance between the supports and after that, you may need to cut the roller to the proper size using a saw if it doesn’t fit properly. Make a mark in the place where you need to cut the frame, if it’s too long, and cut it down with a saw that can cut through the type of material that the roller is made from (wood or metal). You should sand the irregular edges of your frame with sandpaper after it is cut.

The next step in this operation is to cut the material for the conservatory blind to the proper size, allowing for the extra material needed. The material should first be dressed in accordance with instructions which can be found on the dressing spray bottle. After this, you have to let the material dry. Once it’s dried and hardened, the material will be measured on the outline and you will draw some guideline lines with tailoring chalk. Be careful and cut the fabric to the size you need and with care to avoid bending or wrinkling.

Then you should measure the wood or aluminum frame circumference of the roller and you can start to make the seam on the back side of the material and lock it well with sewing thread. Before you start sewing the seam, put the frame in it to ensure that it fits. After you remove the frame from the seam, you can sew it following a straight line, using a thread in the same color as the material for the conservatory blinds so it is not noticeable. Since it is a very hard material, beware that the material doesn’t buckle or bend.

After you finish this step, you should remove the paper which is covering the sticky side of the roller and attach it to the conservatory blind material. The last step is to install the frame into the fixed wall or frame supports. Fix your new conservatory blinds in the holder, then lift them up and let them down easily to check that they work properly.

That’s all you need to do, and it’s not very hard to make conservatory blinds. You will spend less money by making your own conservatory blinds, will have more options because you can choose any type of fabric you want, and you will obviously be more enchanted with the result when all of your friends and family comment on how nice your new conservatory blinds are!
