Hinges for gates can be somewhat fragile and are often the first part of a gate to deteriorate and wear out, due to the constant use they are subjected to. It is important to keep up with properly maintaining any gates and fences you have, and most especially the moving parts like gate hinges and locks. If you do not properly maintain hinges for gates, or other movable gate parts, you will find that they will begin to not work properly and can detract from the look of your fence or gates. They can even become a security issue, making it easier for would-be thieves to break into your home or property. Read on to find out what types of problems can arise with hinges for gates and how you can prevent them from happening.

The very first thing to be careful of with gate hinges is rusting. The build up of rust is mainly brought about by water and oxygen combining, unabated, on a piece of metal. During the rainy season, when almost everything outdoors is wet, rust build up is an almost inescapable reality. The problem with rust is that it weakens the gate hinge, and therefore the gate, making it sag. Sagging is the unfortunate situation when one of the two sides of the gate is higher than the other. A sagging gate not only looks like an eyesore, but will not work properly because the hinge on the gate is not aligned properly. Therefore, if nothing is done about rust, you might see yourself forking out money to get a new gate installed.

In order to avoid rusting, you must oil your gate hinges with used motor oil or grease. By simply pouring it over a joint, you will be increasing the lifespan of the gate by at least 5-10 years. However, the application of grease and oil must be done regularly if you want to reap the best results. In addition to reducing the likelihood of rusting, greasing also kills termites that bring about rotting of the wood of the surrounding gate or fence, as well as preventing the squeaky sound gates normally make when they are worn out at the hinges. Just be careful that when you pour the oil or grease on the hinges, the rest of the gate does not become covered in the oil or grease, ruining the wood.

Another way to prevent sagging of your gate is by simply replacing the old bolts of the hinges with new ones. But before actually doing this, you must make sure that you have all the right tools for the job and that you have the proper sized bolts for the type of gate hinges you have. If you have decided to replace the bolts in your gate hinges, make sure that you do it right or you might end up ruining your gate completely, or may make it sag even more. This is especially important with butt hinges.

One of the first parts of a gate to usually wear out are the hinges, due to the constant wear and tear they are subjected to when opening and closing the gate. But, with a bit of proper gate hinge maintenance, your gate should provide many years of use with no need for repairs or replacement.

Merriam Webster’s definition of noise is sound; especially one that lacks agreeable musical quality or is noticeably unpleasant.

Do you want to create a quiet, peaceful outdoor space where you can go and decompress and relax in your favorite garden rocking chair with a good book? Do you live in an area where noise is a constant part of life? Even if you live outside of a city in suburbia or in a rural area, you may have noise invading your life from sources beyond your control, such as traffic from nearby roads, noisy neighbors, or mechanical noises like rattling air conditioners or buzzing lawn mowers. Unfortunately, unpleasant noise can come from all directions. Wouldn’t it be great to have a place where you can enjoy some solitude? Read on to discover ways to reduce the racket around you.

You may need to attack this from several different fronts and with several different types of landscape supplies. A plant barrier alone may not be enough to noticeably reduce the cacophony from a nearby road. This may require a denser barrier and even a competing pleasant sound from a water feature. Here are a few common examples of noise reducing barriers.

Plants

If you choose to go with this method, you will need to create layers of dense shrubbery or hedge that is tall, evergreen and fast growing. This method will not reduce noise by much, but it’s generally more aesthetically pleasing than constructing a concrete barrier or fence. Hedges do make a good visual barrier.

Fast growing hedges, such as Arborvitae (Thuja,) Holly trees, Privet Hedge or Leyland Cypress, will work well for this. Check with your local nursery for hardiness in your area.

Plant several rows thick and stagger so you get a more solid blockade

Depending on your taste, hedges may be trimmed to look more sleek and contemporary or left to grow naturally for a more rustic, natural look.

Fences

This type of noise barrier may be more effective at reducing the clatter around you, but has it’s own drawbacks. You may live in an area that has restrictions on building fences, as many neighborhoods do these days. The cost is another consideration. Depending on the density, length and height of your fence, it is most likely going to cost more than planting a hedge. Keep in mind that the barrier here needs to be above the noise. Here are a few types of privacy fences to consider:

Masonry wall – stone, brick or stucco covered concrete make the best sound barriers due to their density.

Wood fencing – needs to be solid with no gaps between or below the boards, since sound will find the path of least resistance.

Acoustifence – is a heavy mineral filled visco elastic acoustical material. Used primarily in commercial applications, it is also available for residential use. Not as aesthetically pleasing as other barriers, but according to information on their website, it is extremely effective.

Vinyl fencing – has come a long way and is made to simulate a wood appearance. There are obvious benefits in using this type of material, such as low maintenance, durability and installation ease.

Natural Noise Reduction

Berms – may be one of the most effective, economical methods of reducing the clatter from your life. Building a berm in combination with stone or plants can make a pleasing, effective sound barrier.

Water Features – while not technically a barrier, these can be great at counteracting unpleasant sounds with pleasant sounds, like a waterfall, a man made stream that trickles into a pond or a bubbling boulder.

Noise Reduction Technology

Noise cancellation products that work in the same way as noise canceling headphones. A company by the name of Comfozone, Inc. makes several products aimed at noise reduction including a “nature sound generator” with outdoor speakers, acoustic panels and noise traps. Any one of these products may be exactly what you need to create a peaceful environment in your backyard.

The quest for quiet and solitude is something most of us search for at least some time in our lives. The place we normally look for this is in our own homes, for this is where we find sanctuary at the end of each day. Don’t we all deserve a little serenity? Check with your local landscape company for your particular situation, or do it yourself but check out some of the options above for reducing the noise in your life.

Family privacy is important more than ever these days. When you get home on the weekend or in the evenings, you want to be able to relax in your own home without the snooping and roving eyes of your neighbors upon you. There is no better option for backyard privacy than to install a cedar fence. Cedar fencing offers you the perfect style and wood quality to provide years of carefree backyard enjoyment. What makes cedar so special? Let’s find out more about this wood and why it is one of the preferred types of wooden fencing currently used by homeowners today.

Cedar wood is a naturally rot and insect resistant wood. It is also a classified hardwood, meaning that it can be used extensively for building and installing projects outdoors. It’s not quite as durable as Douglas fir, however, for construction of a deck or patio, the building of outdoor furniture or a privacy fence installation, cedar is a great choice. Because it already is resistant to many types of weather conditions, it doesn’t need much maintenance or care.

At most, you may consider painting or sealing your cedar fencing. If you don’t use a sealant, the only noticeable difference in the lifespan of the fence will be its coloration. Over time, an unsealed fence will have a tendency to turn gray and chalky in appearance. Structurally speaking, the fence will still be in excellent shape. However, if appearance really matters to you because you are using the fence in a decorating scheme to match your home’s siding, furniture, or other garden decor, then you will want to consider applying a paint or sealer to the cedar fencing.

In general, fencing is an often overlooked part of a homeowner’s exterior design plan. Privacy is more important than ever for you, and especially your children. Because wood fencing often is built with a slat type design, these types of fences prevent anyone from seeing what is going on in your yard. Chain link fencing is not like this , and neither is wrought iron fencing. Wood fencing has a distinct advantage in this area.

So, if you are in the position of considering whether or not you will be installing a fence around your home, look beyond just the ordinary and consider cedar fencing as an option. It may cost a slight bit more upfront, but the years of privacy it will provide you with, as well as the solid, long lasting construction it offers, will be worth it.

Most fences are modular, composed of individual fence panels that consist of mesh, boards or chain links held together with two or more rails. While some do-it-yourself homeowners like to build their own panels from scratch, in most cases fencing panels are purchased as prefabricated units. There are as many materials and styles to choose from as there are applications for them — from livestock containment to pool fencing — but for home use, you’ll generally end up choosing some set of metal, wood or vinyl fencing panels.

Wooden fence panels are frequently chosen for front entrances and gardens, but you may want to think twice about whether you actually want to use wood, or simply need the look of wood without the maintenance overhead. Although some woods weather better than others, such as redwood compared to pine, they eventually run into problems with prolonged exposure to the elements – moisture loss or paint chipping from too much sun, or warping from too much rain.

Vinyl fence panels, which are often textured to look like wood, cost a little more up front, but are more economical over time with fewer maintenance headaches. They’re colored in the manufacturing process, thus have no paint to lose. Vinyl fencing also has no moisture to lose, is less attractive to insects, and doesn’t warp.

For metal fences, some homeowners on a limited budget settle too hastily on chain link fencing, assuming that the elegance and sturdiness of wrought iron is out of their reach. While wrought iron fencing is pricey, indeed, consider aluminum fence panels, which have the solid and substantive look of iron while actually being lightweight and economical. Aluminum panels are roughly equivalent in strength to steel fence panels, while being much lighter in weight and less prone to rust.

To have a rough idea of how much your fence is going to cost, you’ll have find out the width and cost of your preferred panel. Fence panels are typically between 5 and 8 feet in width, so you’ll have to determine the number of panels you’ll need by measuring the total footage of the perimeter you plan to enclose, and divide that by the width of your panel. Then you can just figure out the cost of your total fencing job by multiplying the number of panels you need by the per fence panel costs.

To keep costs down, it’s recommended that you stick to vinyl or aluminum fence panels. As mentioned, while some wooden fence panels may be less expensive than vinyl options to start with, the cost of maintaining them over the years, not to mention the time spent doing so, will start to add up. Aluminum fencing will also typically last longer than wooden fencing, so it is a good long term investment. If you prefer a more industrial look, then aluminum fencing panels may be the way to go.

There are many different types and styles of fences, and they all accomplish different things. While some are built to enhance the looks of a property, others are built to determine property lines and boundaries or to provide a measure of privacy. Fences can even be used to promote the growth of vegetation. Some fences have the added benefit of blending in with the natural environment rather than being an eyesore. How often have we seen an unsightly wired fence strewn out across a beautiful country landscape? It’s not a very pleasant sight to see miles upon miles of wired fencing zig zagging across pristine land, but there are ways to avoid drawing attention to an ugly fence.

We all choose fences for different reasons, though, which is why there are so many varieties of fences available. Sometimes we select a fence because it is a reflection of our personality and style. Other times, we choose a particular style of fence because it blends in nicely with the exterior of our home or our garden decor. Still other fence types are chosen because they evoke a certain type of memory or look that we are hoping to achieve. And in some cases, we are just looking for the functionality that certain fence types offer.

If you are looking for privacy and a measure of security, and want to accomplish this by way of a fence, a stockade fence can achieve this end very effectively. The stockade fence has a rich and colorful history. It dates back to the days of ancient Rome. In the colonial times, a stockade fence was used simply, as its name implies, as a stockade. The stockade was useful as a defensive measure. Stockades were also very effective as a way to keep people confined and detained within a very small area of land.

Although much has changed since those times, the stockade fence is still very much in use in the 21st century. Stockade fences nowadays are primarily used for privacy. The fence is effective as a privacy barrier by nature of its very design. The stockade fence is taller and higher than the average fence style and does not have any gaps that allow someone to peek through. So, the fence prevents individuals from being able to see onto a property from the ground level. In fact, the stockade fence can be said to be an outside wall of sorts.

When building a fence, the stockade fence should be given consideration as one very effective way to achieve privacy. While there are many fence styles to choose from, this type of fence, with its long and rich history, can provide just what you need to achieve both your functional and aesthetic needs.

Whether you have an inground pool or an above ground swimming pool, installing a pool fence is important for safety reasons. In some cases, in order to get a permit from your township or local municipality so that you can install the pool, you are required to install pool fencing. But, even if the installation of swimming pool fencing is not a requirement, having a fence installed provides safety, as well as privacy, and is an important addition to your swimming pool design. This is especially important if you have an inground pool, although an above ground pool fence is a smart investment as well.

If you are in the market for pool safety fences and are trying to figure out which type is best for you, consider some of the different types of pool fences available. Different types of fences have varying characteristics so that you can find the type of swimming pool fence that best meets your needs and budget.

Pool Fence Types:

Aluminum Pool Fence – Aluminum pool fences not only provide safety, but can be an aesthetic addition to your backyard space as well. Aluminum fences are extremely durable and will last for years and years. If the fence has a polyester powder coating, then it will resist rust and other corrosion that could otherwise occur from being exposed to the elements and excessive moisture. Aluminum pool fencing can offer a decorative touch and can be selected in a wide variety of designs. They also usually come with a lifetime warranty and require almost no maintenance.

Vinyl Pool Fence – A vinyl pool fence, or one made from PVC, is a versatile fencing option. Vinyl pool fencing comes in many different designs and styles and requires virtually no maintenance. Vinyl pool fences are also a more economical alternative than some other types of swimming pool fences and the material is a great choice around water.

Glass Pool Fence – There is nothing as elegant, or as seamless, as a glass pool fence. Glass pool fences are made from tempered glass so that the fence is durable and safe, yet because it is glass, it does not detract from the look of the pool in any way. Glass pool fencing is one of the pricier pool fence options, but many people that install them say they are well worth the added expense since they maintain the beauty of the pool area. One issue with glass fencing is that is needs to be cleaned more often than other pool fence types, since dirt that builds up on the glass is more noticeable.

Mesh Pool Fence – Mesh pool fencing is a very popular option for many reasons. For one, mesh fences are removable since they are not permanently installed in the ground, so when they are not needed they can be taken down. Mesh fences are durable and are not easily climbed over, which makes them a great swimming pool safety fence. Even for homeowners that install another type of more permanent fence around their yard, having a removable pool fence made of mesh directly around the pool provides added security against children and pets accidently falling into the pool.

Wrought Iron Pool Fence – Another more decorative option is a wrought iron pool fence. Wrought iron is an extremely durable material, and can last a lifetime. It can also provide a more upscale look than aluminum or vinyl. Like aluminum pool fences, those coated with a protective polyester powder coating will resist rust and other corrosion and will require virtually no maintenance.

Chain Link Pool Fence – A standard chain link fence can be used as a safety pool fence as well. This is a fairly economical option, but one hazard is that chain link pool fencing can more easily be climbed over than some other options.

Wood Pool Fence – Wood has always been a material often used in fencing. It can be used as a pool fence as well, although wood will require a bit more maintenance than the other pool fence choices, especially since it is near the water. Wood pool fences, however, can offer an attractive option when it comes to a swimming pool safety fence.

There are many different types of pool fences. Each comes with various benefits and some disadvantages, which are best weighed by each individual homeowner. Before selecting a fence, it is best to first check with your local municipality to see if there are any specific pool fence regulations that you must adhere to. Some localities place requirements on the types of pool fencing you must use, the height of the fence, how far the fence must be placed in proximity to the pool and other rules and regulations.

Once you have decided what type of pool fence is best for your needs, it is then best to do some research to find the best pool fence prices and options. Some fencing will also require additional labor, so be sure to factor all supply and labor costs into your pool fencing estimate.

No matter what type of pool fencing you choose, it is always best to have some type of pool safety fence around your pool to provide an added measure of safety and security. Drowning can occur within seconds of a young child or pet being unsupervised. All it takes is a little one trying to get to some attractive looking pool toys and winding up in the pool by accident to cause a disaster, so investing in your family’s safety, as well as the safety of others, is a wise investment.
