More and more people these days are making use of their fireplaces, partially as a way to help cut their ever rising energy bills and partially because a nice roaring fire on a cold winter’s evening is just that – really nice and comfortable. Aside from the great reasons to use an indoor fireplace, using an outdoor stone fireplace or a fire pit even during the summer is the perfect way to enjoy a cool summer evening outdoors or to simply add ambiance to the night air.

To have a good burn going in your fireplace, you of course need the actual firewood, as well as a place to store it. The most economical way to buy wood is in bulk (have you seen the cost of firewood these days?), and even if you are lucky enough to have a few trees on your own property that have seen better days and are headed for use in your fireplace, they still need to be split into logs and stored until you actually need them. That is where some type of firewood rack storage system comes in handy.

Whether you choose a really big fire rack – the kind for instance that can hold an entire cord of wood – or a smaller version to put on the front porch or back deck, all firewood racks are created for the same basic purpose: to get your firewood off the cold, wet ground and keep it stored away from the elements safely and neatly. A huge pile of logs littering your back yard is neither attractive nor safe, but if you pick the right firewood rack, it can actually look rather nice, as well as serve a very useful and practical purpose.

A good firewood rack needs to be well constructed, since anything too flimsy will simply collapse after you put the first few heavy logs in, which rather defeats the purpose of having a rack in the first place. Look for firewood racks constructed from a good gauge of steel and that are sturdy once assembled. Also make sure the exterior steel has been finished in a way that it can withstand the rigors of a harsh winter out in the elements (you can find galvanized steel firewood racks that are great for outdoor use).

You should also purchase a firewood rack cover, as the actual rack is just half of the system. Moisture is the enemy of firewood, so it is important to buy a cover for your firewood storage system to keep the wood protected from the weather. Some firewood racks come complete with a cover, while other models may require one to be purchased separately. Whichever you ultimately decide upon, make sure you fit the firewood rack cover properly, otherwise you may be left with an entire top layer of logs ruined by snow, rain and ice.

There’s nothing like having a roaring fire in your indoor or outdoor wood fireplace or fire pit, but in order to make that happen, you need to have a place to store some firewood. Firewood is best kept off the ground, where it can be subjected to moisture and insects that can rot the wood before it is ever put to good use, not to mention the fact that a pile of strewn logs around your backyard is not the most attractive of sites. So, whether you have need for a large firewood rack to store loads of cut wood, or a small firewood rack or ring placed directly near the fireplace to just hold a few logs, buying a firewood rack and cover is one accessory that will definitely be needed if you own a fireplace.

It is true that for centuries, mankind has called the fireplace a home. Nowadays, folks just love the warmth and the ambiance that the hearth gives, and they often want to bring it outside their homes. There’s a plethora of ready-made outdoor fire pit designs available today for purchase, but building your own brings more personal pride than purchasing one. When you decide on a DIY firepit project, you are almost limitless to the design and material options you can choose from. And besides, usually when you build your own firepit, it costs less than buying a pre-fabricated model.

Below is a step by step procedure on how to build a fire pit in your backyard:

Before you start digging in your backyard or garden, first check the local codes in your community to see if any of them will affect building outdoor fire pits. Areas which are prone to brush fires may have more stringent policies. The other thing you have to do before you get started is to decide on the materials to use for your firepit and prepare the tools needed, and of course, finalize the fire pit design. Once you’ve got those steps taken care of, you are then ready to build your dream outdoor fire pit. If you have decided to make a basic round stone or brick fire pit, read on for more information about how to get this done.

Here is a basic step by step guide on how to build an outdoor brick or stone fire pit: (note: this guide is for a round fire pit but you can also follow this to build a square fire pit as well, or almost any shape for that matter)

After you have decided the location for your fire pit, which is assumed to be away from trees, overhanging branches or powerlines, lay out the outside boundary of the fire pit by making a circle on the ground.

Mark out another circle inside the first circle and use this as a guide to dig out a trench that is 4 to 6 inches deep. Make sure the trench base is fairly level.

Mix concrete with water until its consistency becomes spreadable but not runny. Spread the mixture into the trench until it is about an inch thick. Leave the inner circle to allow drainage.

Pour gravel on the wet mixture and push the gravel stones down until they are covered by cement. This will provide support and prevent cracking during weather changes.

Allow the concrete to set fully. This will serve as the base of the fire pit.

Now you are ready to build up the walls of the fire pit. Set the first brick or stone on the concreted circle, and then set the next brick or stone adjacent to it on a slight angle to follow the circle, until the first row is completed. Make sure the subsequent bricks have a neat mound of mortar adhered to their sides to avoid gaps.

Go to the next layer of face stones. You can make your imagination work here and stack the layers artistically like putting puzzle pieces. Just make sure to avoid weak points.

Fill the fire pit with 6 inches of gravel. This will support the first two rows as they set up.

As your fire pit builds up, check the height of the fire pit to know if you have reached the desired height before adding subsequent layers.

When you have reached the desired height, set the capstones or the flat stones which will make the top of your stone fire pit. Capstones can be cap pieces or blocks.

Now you have an outdoor fire pit where you can enjoy grilling with family and friends during the day or to keep you warm in the cool summer nights. No matter what the intended use of your new fire pit is and what fire pit design and materials you choose to go with, just make sure that how you build a fire pit is based on keeping things safe, both during the construction process as well as when the fire pit is used. This is the most important aspect of fire pit construction advice possible.

Sometimes when people are getting ready to sell their homes, they forget about a very important area that needs to be addressed. Your yard and outdoor gathering places can make a big difference in how your home appears to a prospective buyer and may even add value to the selling price. One thing that you can do that is not too expensive, but might make a big difference in the look and value of your home, is to carry out a patio fireplace plan.

You will see small outdoor fireplace units for sale in large home improvement warehouses, or even in the grocery store, often in the spring time. These fire pits are relatively inexpensive, and with some seating around them can be quite an inviting feature to your back yard. To a young family, it will bring forth images of s’mores and backyard camping with the kids. For families with older children, the teenagers will dream of parties with their friends around a fire. It can be a joy for the entire family.

If you decide to add one of these outdoor fireplaces to your patio or yard, then make sure that you do it safely. You normally want to have about a ten foot radius around an outdoor fireplace where there is nothing that can catch fire. Sometimes, that is a bit unrealistic because you may have a small yard or many trees and shrubs around the perimeter. If you cannot have a complete ten foot radius, then at least make sure there is nothing directly above the fireplace and that you use a fireplace screen. Screens can catch the small embers or sparks that fly out of a burning fire and prevent them from reaching anything flammable. Another safety measure that you can take is to purchase an outdoor gas fireplace rather than a wood burning one. Gas fireplaces burn in a more controlled manner and you are much less likely to have embers or sparks flying from the fire.

Adding an outdoor fireplace to your home can make a huge difference in the ambiance of your backyard space, while also creating an aesthetically pleasing area that all members of the family can enjoy. And as an added bonus, when you are ready to sell your home, this relatively inexpensive addition can really make a big impact on potential buyers when they step out into your yard. So, the investment you make now in an outdoor fireplace can not only add to your own enjoyment of your home, but can also boost the saleability of your home and make it stand out in the eyes of potential home buyers when it is time to move on.

Once the decision to install an outdoor fireplace has been made, the first question is always whether it should be a portable model or a built-in one. Naturally, built-in fireplaces require a significantly larger investment, but on the other hand, they offer far more freedom in choosing between different styles and designs. If you decide to go with a built-in fireplace, the next question is determining the right choice of building material.

Nearly all custom-built outdoor fireplaces are made of stone. Basically, there are three different types of stones available, each with its own advantages and disadvantages: simple natural stones like very coarse gravel, high-end natural stones like granite and marble, or cultured stone. You can also customize outdoor fireplaces with bricks, concrete and stucco finishes as well.

Simple natural stones mostly have an oval or slightly flat shape and are made up out of a mixture of stone types with large differences in color and texture. As the options for cutting them into specific shapes are limited, and they do not fit well into one another, any gaps between them must be filled with mortar, which usually requires the help of an experienced bricklayer.

Granite, marble or, for example, limestone offer a wide variety of colors and textures, as do travertine tiles. These stones can be cut into shape as desired in order to fit closely with each other. Naturally, they are very resistant to all kinds of weather and are very low maintenance. Of course, they are far more expensive than any other option, and their assembly requires some experience or the help of a professional. But the finished look of an outdoor fireplace made with some of these materials is unmatched.

The third option for outdoor fireplace construction is cultured stone. These are not actually real stones, but are cast from resin and are treated and finished to look like natural stone. Therefore, they can be made exactly according to your ideal of an outdoor fireplace – and they can even be made to look unlike any stones that exist in nature. Their low weight and specific features for easy assembly allow even inexperienced builders to construct a fireplace on their own.

When it comes to outdoor stone fireplaces, or any other type of custom built-in fireplace, there are many decisions to be made. Material choice is only one part of the equation, and you also have to decide about size, shape, and other details such as whether there will be a hearth, mantle, or log rack or what type of fireplace grates you will use, among other things. In order to find out which material option would be right for your individual fireplace needs and desires, the best idea is to actually go and see sample fireplaces made out of each of these types of stones before reaching a decision. You can also find numerous outdoor fireplace photos by searching online or looking through magazines or in books at home improvement stores.

No matter what type of material you choose for your outdoor fireplace, especially if you opt for a beautiful and upscale looking stone fireplace, you will be able to enjoy the luxury and warmth that this accessory can bring to your outdoor space and garden decor.

Just because the sun goes down doesn’t mean you should abandon your front or back yard and head indoors. If you have invested time and money into making your outdoor space an enjoyable place to be, it should be used whenever possible. If nighttime is a little too chilly, dark or even spooky for you, one option is to light up the night with a propane fire pit.

You may already be aware of fire pits and what they can offer homeowners that enjoy their outdoor space, but did you know that they come in a propane gas powered version? Propane fire pits provide all the warmth and comfort of a log fire pit, without the messy startup and cleanup that goes along with burning real wood. Lighting up logs and cleaning up afterward can deter people from actually making use of their fire pit, but the ease of using propane as a fuel source for your fire pit can be the difference between an outdoor accessory that you use all the time and one that you cannot be bothered with most of the time.

Propane gas fire pits start up in an instant. You simply push a button to ignite the gas. If you have ever used a propane grill before, the concept is roughly the same for a propane fire pit and a propane grill. A propane gas tank sits either underneath or a bit away from the fire pit. When the button is pressed, a valve releases the gas into the fire pit and ignites it simultaneously. The flame can then be controlled with a dial in order to reach a desired heat level. When you are done for the evening and ready to head indoors, a gas fire pit can quickly be extinguished by turning the gas off, so you don’t have to sit around waiting for the fire to burn out naturally to make sure it poses no fire risk when you are ready to leave. Log fire pits don’t have this ability, leaving you stuck with a fire you can’t control.

Fire pits that are operated by gas, such as propane, are rated in BTUs – the higher the BTU, the hotter the fire can get. If you have lots of friends and family members that will huddle around the firepit, and want to be able to create a large, hot fire in your pit, you’ll want a model with a high BTU rating. Fire pits fueled by propane also sometimes have artificial logs or lava rocks inside the pit. These are purely aesthetic and are used to hide the gas element and simulate a more natural looking fire.

Propane or gas powered fire pits come in many designer styles that can be exceptionally beautiful and can really add to your outdoor and garden decor. You can buy fire pits in a variety of sizes and shapes, and with many decorative elements, and since there are many different options to choose from, gas fire pit prices will vary considerably as well. However, whether you choose a model with a bold copper bowl or one with granite or travertine tiles on the edges, a small round fire pit or a more expansive rectangular version, a gas fire pit is a wonderful addition to any yard and can keep the party going long into the night.

Is the look of your home in a rut? Are you tired of the floral water sculpture in your backyard that’s gone dull with time? Many landscaping and interior home designs just don’t offer the originality, edge, or modern look that lots of homeowners out there are looking for these days.

If you are looking for designs and furniture accessories for both indoors and out that reflect your individuality, then a custom fire table or fire pit might be just your style. Fire tables are a hot trend in luxury hotels and upscale bars, and are now available to homeowners who want to give a chic, original look to their home. Many water fountains and water sculptures have an archaic, traditional look that is not always desirable, but adding fire tables and fire pits to your interior or exterior design can really add some warmth and spice to your home design.

Some of you may be wondering what a fire table is exactly. Well, you may have seen them at your favorite fashionable bar. They are unique, custom designed tables with glass top surfaces that shoot fire out in different shapes and designs. They are made of various materials, including cut stone and copper, and have several cool fire designs that you can choose from which makes the fire table truly reflect your taste. Peace signs, sun fire rays, and Yin and Yang symbols are just a few of the designs you can find.

Fire pits also give a unique, lounge type atmosphere and warm ambiance to backyard landscapes. They come in various shapes, colors, and sizes, and have a magnetic appeal, making great backyard hangout spots. Your friends and guests will gravitate toward your fire table or fire pit.

Another fire accessory that is great for the interior of your home is something known as a urban fire glass. Fireplaces have always been terrific places to cozy up and spend quality time by, and now with fire glass you can make them even more spellbinding. This glass accessory replaces traditional fire logs and creates a stunning colored fire blaze. It is composed of tempered glass made to withstand high-temperature heat for long periods of time. The chips come in many colors and sizes which make unique and intricate fire patterns.

So, if you are looking for some unique and modern ways to accessorize anything from your backyard and garden or pool area to your living room or family room space, think about the great look that fire tables, fire pits, fire glass and other fire-related accessories can add to your home. In today’s modern decorating schemes, fire is truly hot!

When it comes to fireplaces, many people wonder whether there is a big difference between indoor fireplaces and outdoor fireplaces. For the most part, there is not much of a difference between the two, except that when you are installing an indoor fireplace, you have many more options to consider than you do for an outdoor fireplace, simply because not all materials are made to withstand the outdoor elements and not all types of fireplaces are as appropriate for outdoor applications.

The first main difference relates to the type of fireplace you can install either indoors or out, as far as combustible materials is concerned. When it comes to indoor fireplaces, you have an option to install indoor wood burning fireplaces, indoor gas fireplaces, indoor propane fireplaces or indoor electric fireplaces. Outdoor fireplaces, on the other hand, are most often wood burning options, although you can choose to install an outdoor gas or propane fireplace if you wanted to. Electric fireplaces are not typically used for outdoor purposes, however.

Another difference relates to the type of fireplace surrounds that you can use indoors or out. When you build an outdoor fireplace, you most often are surrounding your fireplace with stone, brick or masonry, because these materials will hold up best to the weather. You can also use tile, but it will depend on where the fireplace is located and what type of tile you use. Indoor fireplaces, on the other hand, can be surrounded with almost any type of material you want, from marble and granite, to glass tiles, stainless steel, other types of metal, stone, and more. An indoor fireplace has few limitations to what it can be surrounded by.

One similarity between the two, however, refers to their portability. Not all indoor fireplaces have to be built into the wall, just as not all outdoor ones need to be. You can choose portable indoor fireplaces that can be placed anywhere you need them to be indoors. A portable indoor fireplace will not be wood-burning however, unless it is a wood burning stove with a proper chimney and flue (but it can’t be moved around, it is just freestanding). An indoor electric fireplace or indoor gas fireplace, on the other hand, can be placed just about any place you want and are self-venting, so you have few limitations as to their location. Portable outdoor fireplaces are usually more like chimineas or firepits – freestanding units that can contain a fire and can be moved around to any location you need them to be.

Other than a few differences between indoor fireplaces and outdoor ones, which mostly relate to the types of materials used to surround the firebox, and in some cases, the type of fuel source used for the fire, there is no great difference between the two. All you need for either indoor fireplaces or outdoor ones is a firebox that can contain a fuel source (either wood logs, gas, propane, or an electric burner), and a way to vent the fireplace. If you do not have a true wood-burning fireplace, your venting needs will not be as much as if you have a gas or electric model, but you will still need to have some way to vent the fireplace.

Adding a fireplace, either indoors or out, adds to the ambience, beauty and comfort of your home or yard. There are quite a few more options that homeowners have when building or buying indoor fireplaces, but there are still plenty of options to choose from when it comes to installing an outdoor fireplace as well. With so many fuel source and decorative options available, you should be able to have the outdoor or indoor fireplace of your dreams.

If you have a traditional outdoor fire pit, you probably enjoy all of the positive aspects of having an outdoor fire – things like the warmth it brings on a cool night and how nice it is to toast marshmallows around it. If you are anything like me, you appreciate those things but find it a drag to have to get everything ready before you can enjoy your fire. If you convert to a gas fire pit you can easily have spur of the moment fires. A gas fire pit looks exactly like any other fire pit, only it has a burner instead of solid fuel to provide the flames.

Gas or propane?

There are two choices for fuel – gas fire pits or propane fire pits. Propane is usually cheaper and more readily available than natural gas by a factor of ten times. Propane is heavier than natural gas, so the burner arrangement is a little different and the burner needs to be an enclosed burner tray. The size of the burner you need will depend upon the size of your fire pit. A small fire pit may be able to get away with a 12″ single ring burner, whereas a larger pit may go up to a 48″ 4 ring burner. The rings help to spread the flames out for a more natural look to the fire.

Fire Pit Filler

This is the non-combustible material you use to surround the burner and will be what you and everyone else will see. The effect that the flames have around the filler will determine the effectiveness of the fireplace. There are many forms of filler such as lava rock, stones, ceramic stone and log effects, but I think that fire pit glass is one of the most effective fillers. The glass is specially tempered and comes in an enormous array of colors and several sizes. You can create your own personal display of glass in your outdoor fire pit and astound your friends with the effects as the flames play on the gleaming glass.

A gas fire pit makes it easy to enjoy a fire in your backyard with no preparation and no cleaning up afterward. Check one out today.

Pools, spas, hot tubs and outdoor kitchens provide a sense of personal luxury, and upgraded landscaping and gorgeous gardens are more popular than ever…

Imagine a dining room far from the kitchen heat, a reading nook with natural light, a place to restore positive energy, a room with bragging rights. All of this could be as close as your backyard. What could be more enticing than a group of people gathered around a fabulous outdoor patio grill with a Tuscan landscape tile mural as a backdrop or a porcelain tile rug for the patio floor nestled between two outdoor couches, that is patterned and fringed in an Oriental, Moroccan, or Southwestern theme?

Patios provide private sanctuaries for family and friends, and offer an interlude from frenetic activities of the main house. Patios are getting decked out in fun things which reflect the inside of the home and that bring the inside outside. For example, tile murals can fit any style or theme and can coordinate with furniture, fabrics, or beautiful scenery and are increasingly finding a place in the outdoors in areas like patios, outdoor kitchens, and inground pools.

From an extensive collection of eye-catching and dramatic Tuscan landscapes to old world master paintings to vintage labels reminiscent of old world style, there is a vast array of beautiful and fabulous images that can be had, or individuals can submit their own images to be transferred onto tiles. The possibilities are endless.

Because the tiles are kiln fired at 1800 degrees F. they are not affected by the damaging affects of UV and are able to withstand extreme weather conditions. Versatility is the keyword for imaged porcelain kiln fired tiles. They are equally at home in an ocean house, veranda, porch, pool, floor, wall, outdoor fireplace, patio, or just about anywhere. They are also ideal for all types of exterior commercial applications, such as restaurants, hospitals, and public parks.

Kiln fired tiles for outdoor walls, pools, floors, and outdoor fireplaces are being proposed in every aspect of building and design imaginable! With the unveiling of this product, calls to custom tile designers have been coming in for the most creative design applications of the century, and people are increasingly ordering tile murals for their outdoor living environment

Companies like AliciaTappDesigns.com offer beautiful outdoor porcelain tiles and custom tile murals, providing the perfect finishing touch to complement any outdoor decor. They can provide tile installations that include any image and can create tile murals in any size. The murals they create are truly a work of art.

Spring is just around the corner, which means many of us are preparing to spend more time outside. It’s time to start thinking about landscaping and gardening projects – things we can do to enhance our outdoor living space so we can enjoy spending lots of time in our own yard.

One of the most enjoyable outdoor improvements you can make is to add an outdoor fireplace to your patio. When set up well, outdoor fireplaces can make it feel like you are blending the luxuries of the indoors with the open sky and fresh air of the outdoors. When you add a patio table, a grill, and some landscaping, you may be surprised at how pleasant the area can be. You may want to eat dinner outside almost every night. What a great way to enjoy the nice weather during the Spring, Summer and Fall.

There are a variety of outdoor fireplaces from which to choose, but the most popular ones are the portable fire pit (or enclosed fire pit) types or the brick and mortar type that is cemented in for a sturdier presence. The type you choose will depend on the space you have as well as what you want from it.

Portable fireplaces are great for smaller spaces or if you have a couple of sitting areas in your back yard and you want to move them back and forth. They may also be a better option if you move often because you can take them with you.

The fixed outdoor fireplaces look and feel solid, very much like an indoor fireplace. They offer more of a presence and make the outdoor space feel more like a defined landscaped area. You have a better opportunity to create a specific look with these because you can choose what type of stone or brick work to add to the fireplace. They also increase the value of your property. If you are considering one of these, you may want to look into outdoor fireplace kits, as they are often less expensive.

Travertine is a beautiful and natural stone that is often used indoors on floors, backsplashes and even walls in the bathroom and kitchen. Travertine tiles can also be used outdoors on patios, outdoor kitchens, stone fireplaces, walkways, inground pool surrounds and as exterior home siding, and they provide a natural feel to any space. Using travertine tiles outdoors can add interest to your exterior décor, but a few points need to be kept in mind before making the decision to use travertine over other types of natural stone.

Travertine tile is a porous natural stone in the limestone family that comes in a number of different finishes and colors. Travertine tile finishes include tumbled, honed, polished and brushed. Colors vary from shades of ivory and beige to golds, reds, and walnut colors. For outdoor purposes, polished travertine is not often used due to its smooth and shiny finish. Tumbled travertine tile, brushed travertine tile, and honed travertine tile are the finishes of choice for outdoor use. The main difference is that honed travertine has a flat, smooth finish while the other two types have a textured finish, so honed travertine is not often used on floor surfaces outdoors due to its potential to be slippery when wet.

One consideration in choosing travertine tiles for your outdoor space is that the tiles are porous and therefore will naturally retain water that then becomes trapped within the tile. This makes them a less popular choice in areas that have regular freeze and thaw cycles, since any water that is trapped within the tile can cause the tile to crack when the external temperature causes the trapped water to freeze. This problem is more likely to arise with travertine floor tiles (used on patios and walkways) than on travertine wall tiles (used on exterior walls), since horizontally installed tiles are more likely to trap water.

One solution to the problem of moisture and water when installing travertine tile outdoors is to seal the tile. Sealing travertine tile not only helps to keep moisture out but also makes cleaning the tiles easier. This is especially true of tumbled travertine, which is more prone to collect dirt due to its textured finish. If sealed, cleaning travertine tile outdoors requires a periodic hosing down of the tile, along with a brushing to loosen up some of the debris.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that travertine is softer than some other natural stone products. While this is not as much of an issue when installing travertine as siding on a home or installing a travertine tile backsplash in your outdoor kitchen, it may be an issue if you are installing the tile as the flooring on your patio, where outdoor patio furniture will be moved around often and may scratch or chip the tiles. This is not to say that travertine is a soft stone. It is a durable stone that has been used on the exteriors of buildings dating back to Roman times – it just may be more likely to scratch or chip than other natural stones.

Choosing the finish for your travertine tiles will depend on the location in which they are being used and the look you are interested in achieving. Honed travertine tiles have a smooth texture with a matte finish, so they can become slippery when wet and are not the best choice for a patio floor. They are a great choice, however, for kitchen countertops and backsplashes, outdoor shower walls, or exterior siding. Brushed or tumbled travertine tiles are a better solution for patios and walkways due to their rougher and more natural texture and better slip resistance.

Laying travertine tiles requires a similar installation method to most other natural stone choices, with the one exception that if it is laid in a location subject to freezing temperatures it should not be set with mortar. When any moisture inside of the stone freezes, it expands and can pop the mortar joints. It is best to install travertine tiles over a solid uniform surface outside, such as a concrete patio slab. Laying travertine tiles can be performed by do-it-yourselfers that have the knowledge of how to properly lay any type of natural stone product, or of course can be handled by professional installers.

Despite the fact that there are some aspects of using travertine tiles that should be kept in mind in relation to moisture retention and the strength of the tile, travertine tile installation is very popular on the exterior of many homes due to its sheer beauty. It is a more appropriate material choice in climates that are not subject to freezing, but if care is taken to properly seal the tile, it can be used in colder climates as well.

You can buy travertine tile from landscaping supply companies, hardscaping suppliers, natural stone suppliers, quarries, garden centers, and home improvement stores. You can even buy travertine tiles online, although it is usually best to use the internet to locate local suppliers in the area and compare prices and selection available (such as color, finishes and sizes), since the weight of travertine tiles doesn’t make them easy to ship inexpensively (unless you are purchasing a small quantity). Travertine mosaic tiles (for backsplashes), and travertine floor tile or wall tile can be purchased online and shipped, but if you are looking to complete an entire patio or large walkway or are planning to side the whole front of your home, buying travertine tiles online is probably not the best option and you should look for places that sell travertine tiles in bulk or discount travertine tile if you order over a certain quantity.

Travertine tiles have been used for thousands of years on the exteriors of buildings and homes and create a beautiful and natural finish, with warm, rich colors and varying textures. As long as a few considerations are kept in mind before deciding where to use travertine tiles in your outdoor space, you can enjoy the beauty and durability of this natural stone for years to come.

If you have an outdoor fireplace, then one of the essential accessories you need is a fireplace grate. Fireplace grates come in various styles and materials and choosing one will depend in part on what size and shape your fireplace is and how long you are planning on using your fireplace grate before replacing it. For the most part, there aren’t big differences between the types of grates used for outdoor or indoor use since the material used to construct most grates will withstand the elements of the outdoors.

If you’re confused about all of the different types of fireplace grates available, here is some information to help you make a decision about the best one to choose:

Cast iron fireplace grates – A cast iron fireplace grate is not only durable and long lasting due to the material it is constructed from, but it is sturdy as well. The slots in these types of grates are typically closer together than other styles, keeping the embers off of the floor of the fireplace and allowing the fire to breathe better.

Steel bar fireplace grates – A steel bar fireplace grate is one of the most durable types of grates you can purchase. Some are made from diamond bar steel and others from flat bar steel. and since they are so strong and durable, some models will even offer lifetime guarantees. The openings on these types of grates are wider than on cast iron grates, but you can choose a model with an ember retainer if you prefer to keep your embers from dropping to the firebox floor.

Stainless steel fireplace grates – A stainless steel fireplace grate is not as heavy and strong as cast iron or steel bar grates, but stainless steel won’t corrode so it is a great option for outdoor fireplaces. Stainless steel grates come in all sizes and shapes.

Self feeding fireplace grates – A self-feeding fireplace grate is designed with an angled back so that as your firewood is stacked up and the lower pieces burn, the upper pieces will fall down into the fire to keep it burning. This makes it less labor intensive to keep your fire burning well. Most models of self feeding grates will be made of cast iron, with small openings between the slats.

Ember-bed fireplace grates – An ember bed fireplace grate includes a retainer along the bottom of the grate that keeps the embers from dropping down from the fireplace grate to the floor of the fireplace. Ember bed or ember retainer grates help to keep fires burning hotter and longer because the embers stay in close proximity to the logs.

Non-tapered fireplace grates – A non tapered fireplace grate is designed so that the both sides of the grate are the same height (most fireplace grates have a higher side along the back of the grate than the front) and remain fairly open with low sides. This works well for fireplaces that have openings on both sides, since one side is not higher than the other.

Expandable fireplace grates – Some outdoor fireplaces are larger than typical indoor fireplaces so it may be difficult to find large fireplace grates that are big enough for the firebox. An expandable fireplace grate can solve that problem since the grate comes with extensions to make the grate as large as you need it.

Extra tall fireplace grates – An extra tall fireplace grate has longer legs than a regular fireplace grate, providing more air circulation under the fire and providing more space underneath the grate for starter wood to get the fire going in the first place.

Round fireplace grates – A round fireplace grate is a good option for outdoor fire pits. Most are constructed from stainless steel, but you can also find round grates in cast iron or steel bar as well.

Fireplace grate heaters – A fireplace grate heater operates by having hollow tubes in the fireplace grate that capture the heat of the fire along with a blower that blows the collected heat out into the space outside of the fireplace. Fireplace grates with blowers are designed primary for indoor fireplaces rather than outdoor fireplaces, since they are rather pricey and may not provide much added heat to an outdoor space to warrant the extra price.

There are many types of fireplace grates available, and which one you purchase may depend in part on the size and shape of your fireplace and how durable you need the grate to be. Since you are using the grate outdoors, it is important that it can withstand the elements of the weather, but any type of heavy duty fireplace grate should suit your purposes well.

You can purchase fireplace grates at stores that sell fireplace accessories, as well as home improvement stores and big box stores (like WalMart and Target). You can also find fireplace grates online from many retailers and if you are looking for a particular type or size of grate, this is a great way to find just what you need. Shopping online is also a great way to compare fireplace grate prices so that you can find the best deal around.

If you own a wood-burning fireplace or fire pit, then you will need to store wood to burn in the fireplace all winter long, or even all year round if you use the fireplace throughout all seasons (which is often done with outdoor fireplaces and firepits). An outdoor log rack is the perfect way to store your wood neatly and conveniently so the wood is available for use whenever you need it.

Log racks come in a variety of sizes and styles and their primary function is to keep wood organized and to keep it off the ground so it is not exposed to the constant moisture of the ground and insects, where it can rot. A log rack can hold a few pieces of wood or as much as a full cord of wood at a time. For those that use lots of wood throughout a season, log racks can be set up side by side along a wall, fence, shed, garage, or just about anywhere outdoors to store as much wood as you need.

Outdoor log racks are primarily constructed from powder-coated steel and have a very basic design. They are streamlined structures intended solely to store wood, and are not generally intended to enhance the outdoor décor. A log rack can be an open square or rectangular structure or a more enclosed round or arc-like structure (sometimes called a firewood or log hoop), and either style works equally well at containing cut firewood to be used in your indoor or outdoor stone fireplace or fire pit.

A fireplace log rack, on the other hand, is typically a smaller rack that is used to store a few pieces of extra wood alongside the fireplace to keep the fire burning. Fireplace log racks can be more decorative in nature and can be used indoors or out and are much smaller in size than outdoor log racks that are intended to house large quantities of wood. A firewood log rack that is used indoors can be constructed from just about any type of material that has an opening to store a few pieces of firewood. Log racks used indoors can be metal, wood, or can even be wicker baskets. Firewood log racks used outdoors near outdoor stone fireplaces or fire pits, however, need to still be constructed from materials that will hold up to the elements of the weather, even if their design is more decorative in nature.

A log storage rack is a convenient way to keep your extra firewood organized neatly for use whenever you need it. To easily move firewood from your outdoor log rack to your indoor firewood rack or directly to the fireplace, you can use a firewood tote or log holder to carry the wood comfortably and without getting dirty or subjecting yourself to splinters.

If you don’t like the look of a large log rack when you only are left with a small quantity of wood, you can order an adjustable log rack that can be made larger or smaller, depending on the quantity of wood you need to store. This type of log rack works well if you order a large quantity of firewood at one time but then take a long time to go through it and want to keep things organized.

While a fire log rack works well to keep wood stacked neatly and to keep it off the ground so it is not exposed to moisture and insects, wood stored outdoors is still exposed to the elements of the weather. One way to protect the wood from excessive moisture due to rain or snow is to use a log rack cover. Log rack covers keep the wood covered while stored so the wood does not get wet and is ready to burn whenever you need it. A log rack cover can be easily removed whenever you need to gain access to the wood stored in the log rack so you can bring it indoors or set up your fireplace to prepare for a roaring fire. Log rack covers are a great accessory to have, since wet wood does not burn well.

If you own a wood burning fireplace, then owning a wood log rack to store your extra firewood is a useful accessory to have. It will keep your wood organized neatly, will protect it from the moisture and insects on the ground, and if you use a log rack cover, will even keep your firewood dry when it rains or snows. There are a number of different styles and sizes of log racks, so choosing the one that best fits your needs and your outdoor space should be an easy task.

There are many uses for concrete blocks. Concrete block construction can include anything from retaining walls and patios to outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, swimming pools, buildings and homes, and more. Depending on what type of project you are looking to complete, there are different types of concrete blocks available for use.

Concrete blocks can be used for almost any structural purpose. Depending on the intended use, there are different types of concrete blocks available, although basic concrete block construction is typically handled in a similar fashion. Concrete blocks are strong, durable, easy to install, and an economic option for many types of building projects.

Concrete blocks are made from a concrete mixture comprised primarily of Portland cement mixed with sand, gravel and water. They can also have pigmentation added to make them various colors, and can have other additives or agents included to give the blocks additional qualities. The concrete mixture is molded into concrete block forms and then is cured and dried. The resulting concrete blocks are low maintenance, fire resistant and can even be energy efficient.

Finishes and styles of concrete blocks can vary as well. For example, a concrete block can be glazed to have a smooth and durable finish, can be split to have a stone like texture, or can be slotted to absorb sound, among other options. Concrete blocks can be manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and sizes as well. The most common type of concrete building blocks are 8” x 8” x 16”, but concrete blocks can be made larger or smaller and can come in different styles, such as concrete block bricks which are often used for patios.

So, what can you do with concrete blocks? Traditional concrete masonry block can be used to build virtually any type of structure. These blocks are often used to construct concrete block walls, whether those walls are being used on the side of a large building, for a garage, or even to create concrete block homes. One very popular use for the blocks is to create a concrete block wall, as a retaining wall or as an external feature in a backyard (for example, in an outdoor kitchen or as a privacy wall alongside a patio). Concrete retaining wall blocks are stacked on top of one another in a staggered fashion with mortar joints and create a secure and solid structure.

Another use for concrete blocks is for laying a patio. Concrete patio blocks come in a selection of styles and decorative options and are an economical option for designing a patio in comparison to natural stone or other alternatives. Decorative concrete blocks can be manufactured to look like bricks or other stone types and can be used to create a beautiful and functional outdoor patio. The decorative concrete block can be laid in various patterns to create an interesting design and block paving is a popular option for patios.

Interlocking concrete blocks are a great option for building retaining walls or other solid and secure structures, or they can be used in place of interlocking pavers at a more economical cost for creating driveways, walkways and patios. Another good use for concrete blocks is to create outdoor fireplaces at a lower cost than stone fireplaces would cost.

There are many concrete block types available to meet the needs of almost any type of outdoor construction project, so no matter what you are looking to build outdoors, you can probably find a type of concrete block available to meet your needs. Some concrete blocks are not overly attractive, but there are others that are very decorative or have various finishes that will not only offer a strong and durable structure, but an attractive one as well.

Laying concrete blocks can be done by homeowners looking to save money on construction costs for outdoor projects. DIY concrete block construction is not overly difficult although there are some basic steps to follow and important points to consider when building with concrete blocks. There are a number of informative articles and videos online that can provide information on laying concrete blocks, and if you have some time and don’t mind a good deal of manual labor, then you can save yourself a lot on labor costs when building a concrete block retaining wall, laying a concrete block patio, or completing another type of building project that involves concrete blocks.

You can find concrete blocks for sale from masonry suppliers, at garden or home improvement centers, or from landscape supply companies. A concrete block supplier will typically have the largest selection of concrete block types for sale and can usually recommend the type of block that will best meet the needs of your project. Concrete block prices will vary depending on the type of block you choose, the size of the block, the amount you need to order, the distance they will need to be delivered (they can be rather heavy and delivery costs can add up quickly), and other factors, but concrete block cost is usually lower than using another type of product for the same job, such as pavers, stone, or bricks.

There are many uses for concrete blocks and many types of concrete blocks to choose from, depending on what you are looking to accomplish and what type of finished look you are hoping to achieve. When it comes to outdoor projects for your backyard, patio, garden or driveway, you may want to consider concrete block construction for its versatility, durability and affordability.

There’s nothing quite like a fireplace to curl up next to on a cool night. Fireplaces not only add warmth in a literal sense, but they also lend warmth and charm to a space. This is especially true of outdoor spaces. Adding an outdoor stone fireplace in your backyard or garden is a luxury you will not regret. The beauty and charm of a stone fireplace that’s nestled on your patio, alongside your garden, or near your inground pool is unparalleled.

When it comes to an outdoor fireplace, there is nothing like stone. A stone fireplace is elegant, rugged, and durable and can withstand constant exposure to the weather. Outdoor stone fireplaces are among the most popular types of stone fireplaces constructed. There are many stone fireplace designs to choose from when selecting the style that best fits your needs. No matter what type of stone fireplace design you choose, you are sure to have years of enjoyment that adds to the enjoyment of your outdoor space.

An outdoor stone fireplace can be used all year long. There is nothing like sitting around the fire during a cool night, whether it be winter, spring, summer or fall, and enjoying the warmth and dancing light that the fire evokes. Your outdoor fireplace will soon become a gathering spot for family and friends, and rather than running indoors as soon as the mercury dips, you will find yourself drawn to sit by your stone fireplace outdoors instead.

Holiday time is an especially wonderful time to enjoy outdoor natural stone fireplaces. Even though the weather outside may be frightful, the glow of an outdoor stone fireplace is truly delightful. Grab a mug of hot cocoa or warm apple cider, don a hat and some warm mittens, and enjoy the glow and warmth of an outdoor fireplace during the holiday season. Stone fireplace mantels can be decorated for the holidays with outdoor lights, garland and wreaths, just as if they were indoors, and can greatly add to the holiday cheer. You will find that the memories you make while gathered outdoors around the stone fireplace hearth are ones that you will not soon forget.

If you already have an outdoor fireplace, then you are all set to enjoy some time spent outdoors to unwind during the busy holiday season. If, on the other hand, you only have plans to build an outdoor stone fireplace but have not yet started, you can rest assured that whenever your stone fireplace is finished, it will bring enjoyment and warmth to you and your family all year long and for many years to come.

If you are at the point that you are still trying to decide on how you want to build your custom stone fireplace but haven’t narrowed down your choices yet, have no fear. You can find a wealth of stone fireplace ideas as well as stone fireplace pictures and photos online so you can get a better idea of what you like and how any given design or type of stone will fit into your outdoor garden décor.

Stone fireplaces can be custom built in just about any design, size or shape. You can also choose from among a variety of different materials as well, and each type of stone will provide a slightly different look and feel to your custom stone fireplace. It is best to check with the contractor that will be constructing your fireplace, however, just to make sure that the type of stone fireplace you desire will hold up well outdoors in the weather conditions where you live.

Some of the most common types of outside stone fireplaces include:

Limestone fireplace – Limestone is a very durable and very attractive stone that is often used in the construction of fireplaces. It holds up well to heat and can also withstand cold, wind and rain.

Sandstone fireplace – Similar to limestone, sandstone is a durable and attractive material that works well in the construction of outdoor fireplaces.

Stacked stone fireplace – Stacked stone fireplaces are more natural and rugged in looks and can be a beautiful addition to any backyard space. They are constructed by stacking individual stones in a pattern to create a stone fireplace surround that is unique and beautiful.

Stone veneer fireplace – When you want the look of stone, without the expense of solid natural stone, you can build a stone veneer fireplace. The cost of these outdoor fireplaces is lower than other models because there is only a layer of stone fireplace facing along the outside edges of the fireplace but the interior of the fireplace is constructed from a less expensive and easily molded material, such as concrete.

Cast stone fireplace – Cast stone fireplaces are a great option for the outdoors because you do not have to worry about individual stones chipping, falling off or becoming loose. In a cast stone fireplace, the material used is similar to a poured concrete that is carved, finished and designed to look like natural stone. Since it is all one solid piece, it is a very durable option for locations that are subject to extreme weather.

Faux stone fireplace – Faux stone fireplaces can be used outdoors in some climates, but in more extreme climates they may not hold up as well as some other outdoor fireplace designs because they are not made from natural stone.

No matter what type of stone fireplace you select for outdoor use, adding an outdoor fireplace will add a warmth and charm to your outdoor living space that is unsurpassed by just about any other type of object that you can add to your backyard. One of the nicest aspects of having an outdoor fireplace in your backyard is how much more often you can enjoy your outdoor space, even as the weather begins to cool off. Rather than being holed up indoors all winter long, you can get outside and enjoy the crisp, cool air as you warm your fingers and toes next to a roaring fire. Your holiday celebrations will also be unique and memorable when they can be enjoyed outdoors, cozied up to your outdoor stone fireplace.
