Looking for a way to spruce up the outside of your home this year without spending a fortune? There are a number of outdoor home repair and remodeling projects that you can tackle on your own that won’t cost you an arm and a leg but will make a big difference in the way your home looks and may also improve its functionality as well. Home repair and remodeling projects can be relatively simple or complex to do, but you will find that if you take some time on occasion to fix things that are broken or to update things that have seen better days, you will get more enjoyment out of your home going forward.

Here are 5 DIY home repair and remodeling projects to get your backyard and garden into tip top shape this year.

Gutter maintenance and repair – Most people may think about cleaning out the gutters if they see them filled with leaves and debris, but what many people don’t take the time to do is to check the gutters and leaders when they are empty to make sure that everything is properly adhered to the sides of the house and that there are no leaks or blockages along the span of guttering that will disrupt the flow of water down and away from the house. Something as simple as doing a visual inspection on a rainy day to notice any dammed up water spilling over the edges of the gutters can be a useful home repair and remodeling project that can keep your home from being damaged by a build-up of water due to faulty or blocked gutters.

Driveway cracks – Over time, it is very common for cracks to occur in blacktop driveways. These cracks can become unsightly and can also lead to bigger cracks and problems if left unrepaired. Filling the cracks is a pretty easy DIY home repair and remodeling project that you can do to improve the look of your home’s exterior and to keep the cracks from eventually creating structural damage. All you need is some driveway crack filler or blacktop patch and driveway sealer and you’ll have a driveway that looks as good as new.

Deck repairs and updates – Unless your deck is made from Trex, or another type of manufactured wood-like product, the wood on your deck needs not only periodic maintenance, such as staining and sealing, but also repair. If the wood on your deck is starting to warp, splinter, crack, sag or rot, it may be time to repair or replace some of the wood so that your deck not only looks its best, but so that it is safe. This may also be a good time to do a bit of deck remodeling, such as adding a few post cap lights to the deck railing, adding a built in garden planter or deck storage box, or simply sprucing up your outdoor deck décor when you are all finished with your repairs by getting an outdoor rug, maybe some new outdoor dining furniture and a few new outdoor accessories. This is one home repair and remodeling project that will surely bring you enjoyment as you spend time outdoors in your backyard.

Front entrance – Have you taken a look at the area around your front entrance lately to see if anything in the front of your home needs repair or remodeling? Chances are that you haven’t, especially if you’re one of those people who don’t often use their front doors for entry into their homes (going in through the garage instead). Check out whether your front door needs repainting, restaining or resealing. Does your doorbell work properly? What kind of shape is your door hardware and kickplate in – does it need to be shined up or replaced because it’s pitted or discolored? How about the outside lights around your entry way – are they bright enough and can you update the styles of lights to give your entryway a more welcoming feel? These are all outdoor home repair and remodeling projects that can improve the overall look of your home and may even increase its value by improving the curb appeal of the house.

Landscaping – When you think of home repair and remodeling projects, you often don’t think of landscaping, but there are many aspects of your home’s landscaping that can use a little repair here and there, and certainly a bit of remodeling of your landscaping and garden décor can breathe new life into the exterior look of your home. When it comes to repairs, you should check to make sure that any automatic sprinklers work properly and that the outside water spigots are in good working condition and are not leaking (which can cost you lots of extra money in water usage!). Also see if any retaining walls and walls that edge off landscaping areas made from wood, stone or bricks are in good shape or if they need a bit of TLC. If you want to do a bit of “remodeling” to your landscaping, get a few new plants or flowers and plant them in areas that are barren or that have older plants that may have seen better days. Plants don’t last forever, and sometimes a once-over of your landscape design that includes removing old plants and planting new ones can give your home a completely new look or can even give your home a similar look to some of those new homes in Kent that you’ve driven by repeatedly and always admired.

These are just a few simple home repair and remodeling projects that you can tackle on your own to improve the look and functionality of your outdoor spaces. There are many other projects that you can take on without having to hire a home repair and remodeling professional contractor. All you have to do is to do some research on how to do anything you’re not quite sure about, make sure you have the right tools and some help, if necessary, and keep the tasks relatively small and simple until you have the confidence to be able to take on larger home repair and remodeling projects with ease.

Black mulch can be a great way to improve the look of your garden, as well as to improve the health of your flowers, shrubs and plants. Black dyed mulch is actually regular mulch that is dyed to a black color using mulch dye that is safe for plants and the environment. You can buy black mulch in bulk from companies that sell landscaping supplies or you can buy black mulch in bags from gardening retailers. However you buy black mulch, laying a layer of black dyed mulch in your flower beds can really give your garden a boost.

Benefits of Black Mulch

The main benefits of black mulch are related to how they protect your plants, shrubs and flowers. These benefits include:

Moisture retention – Black mulch (or any colored mulch for that matter) helps plants retain moisture. Any moisture that plants receive is shielded from evaporation by the layer of mulch that sits above the soil. This means that you have to water your plants and flowers less and it also means that if you go through some really hot or dry spells, your plants are better prepared to handle the unfavorable conditions.

Winter protection – Spreading some black dyed mulch in the fall is a great way to protect your plants throughout long, cold winters. The extra layer of mulch acts as a blanket to keep your plants from damage due to freezing temps in the winter.

Soil enrichment – Mulch is made from a combination of organic matter. This organic matter helps to enrich the soil and helps plants grow, even as the matter breaks down over time due to exposure to air, sun and water.

Aesthetic enhancement – Garden beds that have a layer of mulch spread over them are more attractive and look more well cared for than those that don’t. Black mulch is especially attractive in flower beds. The rich blackish color stands out against the lush green of the lawn and enhances the colors of plants and flowers.

Problems With Black Mulch

If you buy black mulch from a reputable landscape supplies dealer, you should have no problems at all. There can be problems with black dyed mulch however, so it is worth inquiring a bit about what is used to create the black mulch on sale at your local landscape supply store.

Chemicals - For one, make sure that the black mulch you buy is made from natural wood bark chippings and does not contain any type of pressure-treated wood, which can contain harmful chemicals. You also want to make sure that the black mulch dye used is made from natural and ecologically friendly ingredients and again, that there are no harmful chemicals in the dye. If either of these components contains chemicals, the chemicals can leach into the ground, ruining plants and negatively effecting ground water and the health of your soil.

Components – Be sure that you find out what components are mixed in with your black wood mulch to ensure that everything included is safe for the types of plants that you grow. All components should be natural and organic and should naturally decompose over time, adding to the richness of the soil below.

Fading – Depending on the type of black mulch dye used, your black dyed mulch can fade. All black dyed mulch will fade to some degree, but if your mulch fades too quickly or if it fades unevenly in sunny and shady locations, you will not be happy with the look of your new mulch for very long.

Heat – Black mulch retains heat more than lighter colored mulch. If you live in areas prone to excessive heat, you may prefer to choose a lighter colored mulch so that your plants remain cooler during the heat of the day.

Staining – Some of the black mulch dye used to stain the wood in mulch to its rich black color can come off and stain surrounding areas when the mulch gets wet (such as when it rains). If natural, water-based mulch dye is used, the effects of any mulch dye should not be permanent, but if the dye is not water soluble, you may find some staining occurring on surrounding areas, such as walkways, driveways or exterior siding.

Types of Black Mulch

In addition to black wood mulch or black cedar mulch (the most common types), you can also buy black mulch made from rubber or other synthetic materials. Black rubber mulch is best used in areas such as playgrounds for added cushioning beneath the equipment, rather than in flower beds.

Bark chippings are a great way to improve the quality of your garden and protect your flowers, plants and shrubs. Also known as chipped bark mulch, bark chippings are essentially small bits of tree bark and other organic matter that are ground up for use in garden beds. By spreading a layer of bark chippings in your flower beds, you can trap moisture so your plants do not need to be watered as much. A pile of bark chipping can also prevent the spread of weeds.

Single, Double and Triple Ground Bark Chippings

You can find single ground bark chippings, which will still resemble small pieces of bark from a tree or you can opt instead for double ground or triple ground bark chippings which offer a finer consistency. Although triple ground bark chippings may be the most attractive looking, they will not last as long as single ground bark chippings will. As a rule of thumb, you can expect that the larger the pieces of bark in the mixture, the longer it will take for it to decompose and the longer the time interval before you have to buy more bark chippings again.

Benefits of Using Bark Chippings

Retains moisture and keeps plants cool – Bark chippings are a gardener’s friend because they can improve the health of flowers, vegetables, plants and shrubs. By laying bark chippings on top of the soil in flower and vegetable beds, it helps to retain moisture in the soil so that plants do not dry out as easily. This insulated layer also keeps plants cooler because there is a layer of moist matter near the stem of the plants. This is especially good in climates with dry, hot weather because it is difficult to otherwise retain adequate moisture levels.

Insulates plants for the winter – For those who live in climates that experience very cold, severe winters, the reverse is also true. Bark chippings serve as a layer of insulation from the extreme cold of the winter and help to protect plants during this time.

Prevents weeds – Spreading bark chippings in garden beds is a great way to protect against the growth of weeds. It is important to first remove any weeds growing in the soil prior to laying down the bark chippings, but if the beds are already weed-free, the layer of chipped bark helps to discourage weed growth. If you really have a problem with weeds in any particular area, you can first lay down some black plastic sheeting, with a few holes sporadically put in the plastic to allow for water penetration, and then lay the bark chippings over the sheeting. This will provide a great barrier against weeds.

Introduces organic matter – Bark chippings are a combination of chips of bark from trees, as well as other organic material. When mixed together, this organic mixture adds nutrients to the soil and helps plants to grow strong and healthy. Some bark chippings include more organic compounds than others, so inquire as to what is mixed in with the chipped bark before you buy bark chippings.

Decorative Bark Chippings

In addition to choosing between single, double and triple ground bark chippings or bark mulch, you also have options such as what color you want your chipped bark mulch to be. The color of bark chippings you choose will change the overall look of your garden décor, so choose colors according to your design preferences. Choose between:

Red bark chippings

Brown bark chippings

Black bark chippings

Natural bark chippings

Colors of chipped bark mulch other than natural are achieved using a mulch dye that is ecologically safe for plants and flowers. Black mulch can make an especially attractive backdrop that highlights the beauty of plants and flowers.

Buying Bark Chippings

You can buy bark chippings in bulk from a landscape supply company. These companies typically sell bark chippings by the cubic yard and will deliver the chipped bark mulch in a dump truck right to your home or business. Garden supply stores and home improvement stores that also sell plants and other landscape supplies will usually often sell bagged bark chippings. This is a good option if you only require a small amount, since you can just grab a few bags and take it home with you.

If you live near the ocean or love to frequent the beach, you will find that it can be a very resourceful place when seeking items for garden décor or practical garden use.

On the one hand, the ocean contains an abundance of organic materials and minerals which occur naturally. On the other hand, it is swamped with all kinds of debris from humans in the form of wreckage or trash.

Artistically, both make for interesting finds and can be handy alternatives to store-bought yard art or landscaping supplies. The question, however, is how to utilize the choices before you when there’s so much to consider. A few ideas for using ocean debris in the garden include the following:

Seaweed: Layered on the ground around plants or made into fertilizer spray, it provides tremendous amounts of nutrients that strengthen root systems and ward off diseases. Everyone from novice gardeners to professional landscapers use seaweed whenever it’s available.

Stones: Beaches have endless supplies of stones, so if a rock garden is your goal, there’s no better place to go collecting. True, stones from the beach may not fit as nicely together as cut bricks or hewn masonry, but they will provide fresh character to the yard.

Sand: Certain plants require a mixture of sand and soil for healthy growth, and the beach is a great place to scoop up the former – for free.

Wood: Very often, timber gets washed up on the beach. While it’s unclear where it may have originated (a ship wreck? a damaged pier?), the wood can be used for garden bed walls or to section off certain plants. Sometimes an unusually large chunk gets pushed ashore and can be used as a garden bench, border marker, or base for potted plants. Some pieces of driftwood from the ocean even make great decorative objects all by themselves.

Buoys: Buoys often get detached from various locations and wash up on the coast. In some beachfront communities, they are attached to fences as decorations or used as markers in gardens.

Rope or netting: Found on buoys or just lying around, rope or netting that winds up on the shore may have been ripped from traps or fishing boats. Either way, it can be used to tie up shrubbery, tree branches, or to simply help bursting vegetable plants like tomatoes stand upright.

Shells: These can be strung together and hung up around the yard like chimes clinging in the wind. The larger kinds can also be used as markers when planting seeds and, depending on their depth, as seed starters.

Star fish: Of all the ocean life that washes up on shore after a storm, star fish seem to have the most ornamental use when dry. If they can’t be returned to their life in the ocean, they make intriguing and imaginative decorations in the yard, especially when painted and put in a rock garden with low lying flowers.

Glass: Ocean glass is special in that it gets smoothed out by the power of the sea. When enough ocean glass is collected, one project can be to line the exterior of garden pots in mosaic fashion for a beachy and interesting look.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to spruce up your backyard or garden, installing some cheap paving slabs on your own may be just the way to go. If you can find some cheap paving slabs for sale, you can easily turn an open area into an interesting patio or sitting area, or you can create a meandering pathway among your flowers or lawn. So here lies the problem – where do you buy cheap paving slabs?

The secret to finding cheap patio paving slabs that won’t cost you an arm and a leg is a little flexibility on your part. If you are willing to compromise a bit on color, texture and size – and you are willing to do some leg work to find what you need – you may be able to find some paving slabs cheaply – or at least more cheaply than what it would cost you if you paid full price. Once you’ve found the discounted slabs, the key is to do your own installation to keep the cost of installing paving slabs cheap as well.

Where to Find Cheap Paving Slabs

Ask about sales – The best place to begin your search for cheap paving slabs is to go to a masonry or landscape supply company that specializes in selling slabs. Find out if they have any particular type of slabs on sale that are cheaper than usual and see if you like those. Sometimes if suppliers have an abundance of inventory or have a particular style that is not selling well, they’ll discount that particular style to move it more quickly.

Collect scrap – If you are only covering a small area, such as an area around a garden fountain or a small walkway through your garden, you may be able to piece together your paved area cheaply by collecting scrap pieces of patio paving slabs and then creating an interesting pattern with the different pieces you find. Ask if there are broken pieces of paving slabs that can no longer be sold and see whether you can get them for free or if you can buy the broken patio slabs cheaply. You may have to go to a number of different paving slab suppliers, but if you can collect a few pieces from each, you will quickly have some cheap paving slabs that you can turn into an interesting and eye-catching design. Just lay the mismatched slabs out to create an interesting pattern before installing them. You may want to break bigger pieces down even more to create a look that more closely resembles natural stone – especially if some slabs are much larger than others.

Ask friends, relatives and neighbors for surplus – If you know people that recently installed their own patio or walkway, you can ask if they have any surplus paving slabs that you can either have for free or that you can buy from them cheaply. Patio slabs given to you by people you know may be the cheapest, since they are often just extras lying around taking up room and people are happy to part with them, so they may not even cost you anything.

Shop off-season – Walkway and patio paving slabs, and any other type of products that are meant for outdoors, will typically be more expensive in the spring and summer, when homeowners run out to do all types of outdoor projects. Some products will then be discounted in the fall to reduce inventory before the winter season rolls in. If you are not in a rush to get your project done, you may be able to find some cheap paving slabs for sale during the end of the fall season or beginning of the winter. You’ll still usually have time to complete your project before the ground gets too hard and frozen. Otherwise, you can store the slabs until spring when you’re ready to install them.

When it comes to making grass grow, homeowners may wonder what the best way to a healthy, quick lawn is. The key to getting a quick lawn of grass that looks good and continues to grown lush and healthy is a much debated topic – and answers to the question of “what’s a quick way to a quick lawn?” have been much debated over the years.

One product currently on the market claims to offer homeowners a quick lawn that can be grown all year round – and the name of the product is a reflection of that statement, as it is called “Quicklawn”. Quicklawn grass seed is a product offered by the company Gardener’s Choice. The product claims to be the answer to growing a quick lawn full of green healthy grass. But does this wonder grass really work?

Quick lawn seed is supposed to grow in only 5 – 7 days, no matter what type of conditions it is grown in. The advertising promos claim that it is a turf grass that can provide a quick lawn of color throughout all four seasons – winter, spring, summer and fall. Claims also add that not only do you get a quick lawn of grass, but you get a lawn that is thick and dense – just like a lush, carpet of deep, rich green. In fact, it is supposed to be so thick and compact that it can even deter weeds, crabgrass and dandelions from growing.

You can get Quicklawn seed by Gardener’s Choice from a number of different places. The product is offered as an “As Seen On TV” product – you know, the ones with the great infomercials on television that tell you all about how easily you can get a quick lawn of grass that stays green even in the heat of the summer or when the snow is falling? But even though Quick Lawn grass seed is an As Seen On TV product, that doesn’t mean it’s the only place you can get it. You can get it from the company’s website, from a number of other retailers that sell lawn and grass seed, and even from Amazon.

Buy Quick Lawn Grass Seed by clicking here.

But, still you may be wondering if Quicklawn grass seed really results in growing a quick lawn. Well, there seem to be mixed quick lawn reviews for this product. Most people tend to agree on the fact that the grass seed does indeed grow quickly – in the 5 – 7 day timeframe that the company advertises. Where the reviews seem to differ is about what happens to that quick lawn next. Some customers seem thrilled with the product and really do feel that they not only get a quick lawn of grass, but a lush and healthy one as well. Other reviewers, in contrast, say that although the grass grows in quickly, it does not seem to stay lush and green for long or continue to provide a full, healthy lawn of grass.

The main point that seems to differentiate the reviewers of this quick lawn product is location. It appears that one of the hardest places to maintain the quick lawn seed over time is in dry, hot climates, such as Arizona. Not sure how many people have tried to maintain their lawn using this seed under mounds of snow, so the jury may still be out on that claim. But like many other types of grass seed, where you live may determine how satisfied you are with the Quicklawn grass seed product.

All in all, many people seem to be happy with the quick lawn sown by using Gardener’s Choice Quicklawn seed. It does seem to grow quickly and appears to hold up to its title of being a ‘quick lawn grass seed’. It does seem to be adaptable to a wide selection of soil types, although it works better in some than others, and certain soil and climate conditions just don’t seem to allow this quick lawn seed to work its magic over the long run. Overall, however, it seems to be a pretty decent grass seed that is resistant to insects and disease, grows in many varied conditions, and sprouts quickly, delivering a quick lawn of green grass with relatively minimal effort.

You can buy quick lawn grass seed for about $16 – $20 for a 2 pound bag of seed that will cover about 1000 square feet of lawn. One pound and 5 pound bags of quick lawn seed are sold as well. When you are shopping specifically for Quicklawn grass seed, you will notice that there are some other brands that include the claim of a “quick lawn” on their packaging, but the actual “Quicklawn” lawn seed is offered only by the company Gardener’s Choice and includes the “As Seen On TV” symbol right on the package. We aren’t sure whether the Quicklawn seed is any better or worse than other companies’ grass seed that claim to grow a quick lawn, so you’ll have to decide for yourself which type of seed is best based on your particular growing conditions.

When it comes to lighting up your home at night, almost nothing is as easy to do as installing solar walkway lights around the walkways and paths outside your home. Not only are solar walkway lights easy to install, but they can add an inviting glow to your outdoor décor, while also increasing the safety and security of your home. With solar powered lighting becoming more and more widely used by homeowners, the selection of solar walkway lighting continues to expand, providing more decorative and functional options than ever.

Solar Walkway Light Installation

Solar powered walkway lights are so easy to install because there is no wiring to contend with. Each solar walkway light has its own separate solar panel attached to the light itself to power it when the sun goes down. The solar panels collect energy from the sun by day and store that energy in order to convert it into the energy needed to run the lights at night. Many solar walkway lights are lit with LED bulbs, which are much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, requiring minimal energy to keep them lit. Since most solar panels are attached to the walkway lights already, all you have to do is securely stake the lights into the ground, make sure the solar panel is facing the sun and you’re done!

Solar Walkway Light Styles

You can install solar lights along a walkway in a number of different ways. You can place the lights in the ground along the side of the walkway, can have the lights shine down along the walkway from above (whether the lights are on a post or attached to a nearby wall or fence), or you can install the lights right into the walkway itself. No matter what type of solar walkway lights you choose, you are sure to find a decorative style to suit your needs.

On the ground – If you’re looking to place outdoor solar walkway lights on the ground alongside your walkways and pathways, you’re in luck! There’s a wide variety of lights to choose from. Consider small solar walkway lanterns that are staked in the ground along a path, solar walkway spotlights that sit a bit away from the walkway but shine down to illuminate the path, solar walkway marker lights that serve as delicate beacons alongside a path, or solar walkway string lights that can be laid along the edges of the walkway to subtly define the path.

From above – If you would rather illuminate your pathway from above, there are plenty of options for that as well. You will find solar walkway post lights that are comprised of tall posts that sit in the ground with a decorative lantern light poised above or you can opt instead for a solar path light that is attached to the side of an exterior wall or fence that helps to light the way. Either way, you will have a number of different decorative options to choose from.

From within – Want to really make your walkway stand out at night? Install solar walkway lights right within the walkway itself! You can replace a few pavers or bricks within a pathway with solar powered paver lights that light up when the sun goes down. If your walkway has a step or two, adding a few solar walkway step lights is a great way to ensure that everyone notices where they need to step up or down, reducing the chance of falling.

Decorative Solar Walkway Light Options

Just as there are many options for solar walkway light styles, there are also many decorative options as well. You can select from stainless steel, bronze, brass, metal, wrought iron or a variety of other materials for your outdoor solar walkway lights. You can find these lights in every decorative style, from super contemporary to traditional, and from very ornate to very subdued in nature. You can even find color-changing solar walkway lights, if that is your thing!

Solar Walkway Light Prices

With so many variables to consider, you can also rest assured that prices of solar walkway lights vary widely as well. So, if you’re just looking for some cheap solar walkway lights to add a bit of safety to your home but don’t want to splurge on some fancy, decorative lights, that’s okay because you’ll find just what you need at a price you can live with. If, on the other hand, you’re willing to spend some money to really make your lights stand out, you can find some beautiful and eye-catching solar walkway lights that will make people stop and take notice. The best solar walkway lights for any home will result from a combination of the type, decorative style and price tag that work just for you.

When it comes to garden hose storage, you have a number of different options. Why is garden hose storage something homeowners should even think about? There are a number of reasons. For one, you want to make sure that your garden hose remains in good shape and is free from kinks and bends when you need to use it. Keeping your hoses safely stored will also keep them from being run over by the lawnmower or gnawed at by animals. Haphazardly strewn garden hoses can also be tripping hazards. Finally, investing in an outdoor garden hose storage holder is worthwhile because it can provide a place to keep your hose out of sight when not in use. This means that your otherwise attractive landscaping will not be marred by a stream of garden hoses strewn around throughout the yard.

Buy garden hose storage containers here!

Best Garden Hose Storage Options

As mentioned, there are a number of different options for storing garden hoses. Which one you choose will depend on how much you want to hide your hoses when not in use, how accessible you want your hoses to be, how long your garden hoses are, and how much you are willing to spend on gardening hose storage. Here are some of the best storage options for garden hoses:

Garden hose storage pot – These are a great way to conceal the look of garden hoses. The hose is coiled up inside what looks like a garden pot or planter and there is an opening that you can pull the hose through when you need to use it. This is the best garden hose storage container to choose if you want to make your hoses as “invisible” as possible.

Garden hose storage reel – One of the most popular methods for storing garden hoses is with the use of garden hose storage reels. These consist of a reel, or wheel, upon which the hose is wrapped around. At one end, the garden hose is attached to the water source and the other end provides a way to unreel the hose to its full length when needed. For those that don’t want to see the hoses when not in use, a garden hose storage reel hideaway is the answer. This takes the traditional hose storage reel and houses it in a box with a cover so that the hoses are hidden from view when not in use. Most garden hose reel hideaways have a lever on the outside of the box that you can use to rewind the garden hoses when you are done with them. There are some garden hose storage reels that also come with an auto-rewind mechanism.

Garden hose storage hanger – If you’re looking for an inexpensive and simple way to store garden hoses, a storage hanger may be just what you need. Garden hose storage hangers can be as simple as a set of hooks (usually one or two) that are attached to a vertical surface and can be used to hold a reel of garden hose. If you want a more elaborate storage hanger, you can find options that also include storage containers for housing other garden-related objects upon which the hangers are attached.

Garden hose storage box – Similar to a storage pot, garden hose storage boxes are made to draw attention away from a mess of hoses sitting on the ground. Instead, the hoses can be housed inside a box, made from anything from wood to resin, with or without a reel inside, to keep the hoses tidy. All that’s needed is a hole in the box through which the hose can be pulled when it is needed.

Garden hose covers – If you prefer not to house your hoses within a container such as a garden pot, box or reel hideaway, but you don’t want to have to look at your hoses sitting on the ground and detracting from your landscaping, you can buy covers to put over your garden hoses. These will make the location of your hoses less obvious.

You can buy garden hose storage containers that come with hoses included or you can purchase the storage container separately if you already have hoses. Prices for garden hose storage options will vary widely, depending on the style chosen. You can pay as little as a few dollars for a basic garden hose storage hanger to $100 – $150 or more for a reel hideaway with garden hoses included. The cost of garden hose storage will depend a lot on what you are looking to buy.

If you want a free or cheap garden hose storage option, consider making your own. Take any attractive looking garden pot or box that can be used outdoors (such as a deck box) that is large enough to house the amount of gardening hose that you own. If possible, make two holes in the container – one for one end of the hose to come out of so it can be attached to the water source and another for the usable end of the hose to be drawn out. If you can’t make a hole in the particular vessel you want to use to make your own garden hose storage container, you can simply keep the hoses stored inside and pull them out of the top opening (such as the top opening of the pot or the top of the box) when you need to use them. This is a great way to keep your garden hoses out of sight, without having to spend any additional money.

If you do opt to buy a garden hose storage pot, box, reel or hanger, there are many places from which you can purchase them. You can find some options just about any place that you would buy garden hoses or other garden-related items, such as home improvement stores, garden centers or big box stores. If you can’t find what you’re looking for or are looking to compare prices, you can buy garden hose storage containers online from places like Amazon, as well as retailers specializing in products for use in backyards and gardens.

Although less popular than other types of landscape lighting, line voltage landscape lighting is one option that residential homeowners may want to consider. Line voltage landscape lighting is more often used by commercial properties, since line voltage landscape lights can be very bright, increasing the light’s impact and enhancing security.

What is line voltage landscape lighting?

Line voltage landscape lighting is landscape lighting that uses 120v lines. This results in brighter and more powerful lighting than low voltage or solar landscape lighting, but it also requires quite a bit more effort and expense to install.

Find a wide selection of line voltage landscape lighting here!

How is line voltage landscape lighting installed?

If you are interested in installing line voltage landscape lighting, the first thing you should do is hire a licensed electrician. This is because the average do-it-yourselfer should not attempt to install 120v electrical lines on their own due to the inherent risk involved. This risk can result in personal injury during the installation of line voltage landscape lights as well as subsequent fire risks if the electrical lines are not run properly.

When an electrician installs line voltage landscape lighting, the first thing that he must do is to place 120v outdoor lighting cable into a conduit for protection and then lay the conduit 18” below the surface. The cables and conduit must be laid out in such a way that electricity will be delivered to all locations around the home that will require lighting. In order to properly lay the conduit and cable properly, a deep trench must be dug. Some professional electricians will own a trencher to do this job, making easier work of burying the cable.

At all connection points between line voltage landscape lights and connecting cables, there must be sealed junction boxes that are completely waterproof. If water enters the area where connections are made, it can result in a serious shocking hazard.

Why choose line voltage landscape lighting?

The main reason that 120v line voltage landscape lighting is chosen over low voltage or solar landscape lighting is that a line voltage landscape light will be brighter and emit more directed light than other types of landscape lights. This benefit is important enough for some homeowners to go through the expense and effort of having line voltage landscape lighting professionally installed. One place that the difference in landscape lighting brightness is noticeable is for up-lighting. This is when landscape spot lights are situated strategically amongst the landscaping and are pointed up at trees, the side of the house or another interesting feature to create visual impact. Low voltage and solar options don’t have the power or emit a bright enough light to make this type of lighting work effectively.

For those that need a good deal of bright light spread amongst the landscaping, whether on a residential or commercial property, line voltage landscape lighting is the option to choose. There’s no comparison to the level of light emitted from these types of lights compared to other lighting types.

Why not choose line voltage landscape lighting?

The main reason not to go with this type of lighting is the expense. Line voltage landscape lights cost much more to install than low voltage or solar lights. The line voltage lights themselves are also more expensive to purchase. And, line voltage lighting results in higher electricity bills and uses up more energy. One other reason to think about another type of lighting is that line voltage landscape lights are not available in as many styles and finishes as other types of landscape lighting.

Where to buy line voltage landscape lights?

You can buy 120v line voltage landscape lights at most retailers that sell outdoor landscape lighting. This includes lighting stores, home improvement stores and other types of big box retailers. You can also buy line voltage landscape lighting online from a wide variety of internet retailers. Since you may find a smaller selection of line voltage landscape lights available at your local store as more and more homeowners are opting for solar and low voltage landscape lighting, you should find a wider selection of lights to choose from by searching online. Some popular brands of line voltage landscape lighting are Hinkley Lighting and Kichler.

What do line voltage landscape lights cost?

You can expect line voltage landscape lighting prices to be higher than similar types of low voltage or solar lights. Prices will vary widely depending on the type of light you are buying, the size of the light, the decorative finishes and the manufacturer, but you should expect on average to spend about $50 – $200 per line voltage landscape light. This of course does not include the price of hiring an electrician to run the lines, make the connections and install the lights, which can be a very expensive undertaking. The good news, however, is that once the line voltage landscape lighting is installed, it can remain in place providing years and years of bright light and adding impact, security and attractiveness to your exterior landscape décor.

A lawn scarifier is a piece of lawn and garden equipment designed to remove thatch, moss and other debris from a lawn. While most people haven’t heard of a lawn scarifier in the U.S., lawn scarifiers are better known in other parts of the world, such as the UK. Lawn scarifiers operate in a similar manner to a lawn mower but have a rotating cassette on the bottom with a series of tines that can break up thatch, moss and debris without otherwise harming the grass. For this reason, owning a lawn scarifier can help you achieve a great looking and healthy lawn.

How To Use a Lawn Scarifier

Using a lawn scarifier is a relatively simple process and will depend in part on what type of equipment you own. If you have an electric or petrol powered lawn scarifer, you just have to guide the equipment in the right direction while the motor moves it along the area to be dethatched. If you have a manual lawn scarifier, you will have to push the equipment in a similar manner to pushing a lawn mower. If you have a scarifying rake or rolling rake, you will have to push or drag the rake across the area to be dethatched until all of the dead debris within the lawn is removed.

No matter what type of lawn scarifier you use, however, it is important to make sure you clean up and remove any thatch or debris that is loosened for your lawn, unless your equipment has vacuum capabilities to suck up the debris into a bag for disposal. If you leave the loosened thatch on the lawn, it can do just as much damage to your grass as if you had never dethatched in the first place.

Manual vs. Electric vs. Gas / Petrol Lawn Scarifier

When it comes to buying a lawn scarifier, you have a few choices. You can get an electric lawn scarifier, a petrol lawn scarifier or a manual lawn scarifier. Although electric lawn scarifiers run cleaner and quieter than their petrol or gas-powered cousins, one of the main limitations is that you need to plug it in. If you have a small lawn, this may not be much of a problem, but if your lawn is relatively large, you may have to run a series of extension cords all over the lawn in order to get your lawn scarifier to operate across the whole lawn. This makes a petrol lawn scarifier a more popular option, since it removes the limitations caused by having to plug in electric models. Petrol lawn scarifiers are also more powerful and can complete a job more quickly.

You can also get a manual lawn scarifier which you push to operate. A manual or push lawn scarifier works in a similar fashion to a push lawn mower – you simply have to supply the energy to make the equipment operate. If you just need to dethatch a small section of lawn, you may prefer to opt for a lawn scarifying rake that simply has long, stiff tines on the end to grab any thatch, moss or dead grass between blades of healthy grass. A lawn scarifying rolling rake also has wheels on the edges to make it easier to use.

Independent Lawn Scarifier vs. Lawn Scarifier Attachment

Many people purchase a separate lawn scarifier in addition to their lawnmower. If, however, you have a lawn tractor, you can also opt to buy a lawn scarifier attachment for lawn tractors. The attachment operates just like a motorized lawn scarifier, except it makes super-easy work of dethatching your lawn, since all you have to do is ride on the mower while the attachment does its job.

Lawn Scarifier Options

In addition to the choices available between a manual, electric or petrol lawn scarifier and an independent or lawn scarifier attachment for a lawn tractor, there are also some options to consider when purchasing the equipment. You may have options as to the size of the tines on the scarifier and determining the proper size will depend on the type of lawn you have. You can also buy a lawn scarifier with aerator capabilities. This will allow you to not only dethatch your lawn, but to also create plugs that aerate your lawn, giving it room to breathe and allowing it to grow healthier.

Lawn Scarifier Brands

There are a number of companies that sell lawn scarifiers. Some of the more popular brands are Bosmere, Qualcast, Agri-Fab, Atco and Midwest Rake. You can buy lawn scarifiers from stores that sell garden equipment, lawn tractors and aerators, or you can even buy lawn scarifiers online from places like Amazon and other lawn care-related retailers.

One way to make your home safer while also increasing its aesthetic appeal is to install outdoor walkway lighting. Installing outdoor walkway lighting is relatively easy to do and the options available for outdoor walkway lights can suit any style of home and come in virtually any type of lighting source.

If you’re looking to buy outdoor walkway lighting and are unsure of what you want or what is out there, you’ve come to the right place! We will provide you with some outdoor walkway lighting ideas to help you decide how best to light up the walkways around your home.

Buy outdoor walkway lighting here!

Solar Outdoor Walkway Lighting

One popular option to consider is outdoor solar walkway lighting. Solar lights are an attractive option, not only because they conserve energy, but also because they’re easy to install. With no electrical wires to run, solar outdoor walkway lights can be placed anywhere you desire with minimal installation needs. The only requirement is that the lights get enough daytime sunlight in order to operate effectively at night.

You can buy outdoor solar walkway lights that come with stakes which are installed in the ground along the sides of the walkway. If your walkway runs alongside a wall or fence, you can install wall mounted solar walkway lights to brighten up the path from above. Another option is to install outdoor solar walkway lights or pathway lights right within the walkway. These are square, rectangular or circular lights that can be placed into the walkway itself to light up the way. They require no wiring since they are solar and can easily be put in place during the initial installation of the walkway. If you have a walkway made from pavers or bricks, you can also remove some of the pavers or bricks to replace them with solar walkway lights of the same size at a later time.

Low Voltage Outdoor Walkway Lighting

If solar is not your thing, you may prefer to install low voltage outdoor walkway lighting. Unlike solar lighting, low voltage outdoor walkway lights will require the installation of wiring, but since the lines are low voltage, they can be easily installed by do-it-yourselfers. This can save you a big expense over having to hire an electrician. Low voltage outdoor walkway lights are most often placed along the sides of a walkway to light up the edges of the path. They usually come in kits with a specific number of lights and a transformer that connects all of the lights. Low voltage outdoor walkway light kits usually come in sets of four, six or eight lights, although you can even find some sets that come with as many as ten to twelve lights or more in the kit. Most outdoor low voltage walkway lights come with LED bulbs and are suitable for installation in wet locations.

Outdoor Walkway Lighting Styles

When it comes to lighting up the walkways and pathways around your home, you have a number of styles to choose from. First you need to decide if you want outdoor walkway lights that are placed alongside the walkway, above the walkway on an adjacent wall, post or fence, or within the walkway itself. Then you have to decide if you want the lights to be operated by solar power, low voltage wiring or regular electrical current (if opting for the latter, a licensed electrician should be called in to do the job). Finally, you have to select the style of outdoor walkway lighting that you want.

You can find outdoor walkway light styles to suit just about any type of exterior home décor. Most of the style options will come in the form of post or lantern lights that are installed along the outside edges of the walkway. These lights are available in copper, brass, bronze, brushed nickel and other metals. They can be sleek and contemporary or can evoke a feeling of wandering in a country meadow or a large Southern estate. You can find outdoor walkway lighting that is casual and beachy or formal and grand. And you can find a variety of outdoor walkway lights that will coordinate well with other types of outdoor lighting so that the lights along your pathway go well with the rest of your outside lighting décor.

Lighting Up Outdoor Walkway Lighting

Just as there are many types of outdoor walkway lights, there are also a number of ways to make sure that they turn on when the sun goes down. How you choose to turn on your outdoor walkway lights will depend in part on the type of lights you buy and how much you want them to stay on. If you install solar outdoor walkway lights, most have a sensor that will turn the lights on automatically when the sun goes down or the light level is too low. Low voltage outdoor walkway lights will often have a timer build into the transformer so that you can set the lights to go on and off at a specific time of day or night. You can also get motion sensor outdoor walkway lighting that will go on only when motion is detected nearby. These lights will not remain on all night long, but will provide a more safely lit passage when someone is walking by. Of course, you can also always opt to just flip a switch on and off when you want to turn your outdoor walkway lights on and off!

When it comes to outdoor lighting, almost nothing can evoke the charm and elegance of bronze light fixtures. Outdoor bronze light fixtures come in many different styles and designs, giving homeowners a myriad of choices for lighting use. One of the reasons why bronze light fixtures make such a grand impression when used outdoors is the natural aged look that bronze offers, which can be an interesting addition to any outdoor landscape. Bronze can be bold and vibrant, deep and rich, or if allowed to age to a gentle patina, can evoke a totally different look with its own appeal.

When you are shopping for outdoor bronze light fixtures, you have a number of choices to consider. For one, you first have to choose the type of light fixture you need. This decision will be dependent for the most part on where you are installing the light fixture. For example, if you need a light along your front walkway, you may opt for a bronze post lantern, while if lighting right outside your front door is what you need, a bronze wall lantern or wall sconce will fit the bill better.

Here are a few of the more popular styles of outdoor bronze light fixtures to choose from:

Bronze post lanterns

Bronze wall lanterns

Bronze wall sconces

Bronze outdoor pendants

Bronze outdoor chandeliers

Bronze outdoor ceiling fans

Bronze landscape lighting

Bronze patio lighting

Bronze deck lighting

Bronze LED lighting

Aside from selecting the type of outside lighting style you need, you then need to consider the finish that you desire from your outdoor bronze light fixture. Most likely, you will see manufacturers that offer this type of lighting selling oil rubbed bronze light fixtures, or they may simply call them oiled bronze light fixtures. What this means, as far as the finish is concerned, is that an oil has been added to the surface of the bronze that contains chemicals which makes the exterior finish of the bronze light fixture look like it is already aged. So, rather than getting a shiny bronze finish to start, your bronze light fixture will probably look more like it has a deep brownish or dark grayish finish, with some hints of bronze and coppery tones coming through. This provides a beautiful, rich finish that is sure to add charm and elegance to your outdoor landscape design.

If oil rubbed bronze light fixtures aren’t really your style, you can opt for brushed bronze light fixtures instead. These have more of the bronze coloring that you would expect from a bronze light fixture, but like a brushed nickel, the surface is dulled a bit so that it does not offer a bright and brassy look. Instead, brushed bronze lights have a softer and more subtle finish to them, while still looking more like the color of what you would expect new bronze to look like.

If you love the look of patina, you may be wondering if you can buy patina bronze light fixtures. While you may find an antique store or specialty retailer that sells this type of lighting, most manufactures don’t sell bronze light fixtures that already have a patina finish on them. But, if this is what you love about bronze, have no fear. All you have to do is buy an untreated bronze light fixture, install it outdoors and wait for a little while. The natural elements of air and water will begin to oxidize the finish of the bronze to create the soft green patina finish that you desire.

Outdoor bronze lighting is a great way to add a rich elegance to your outdoor décor. Whether the lights are placed throughout your exterior landscape, or you simply opt for an eye-catching bronze chandelier hanging right above your front door from a covered porch, this type of outdoor lighting is sure to make a beautiful statement.

Rotovators are excellent tools for people looking to create beautiful, enduring gardens. They are a form of motorised cultivator which churns up soil using tines. This serves to aerate the soil and create a smooth bed that is perfect for planting. If you are looking to create a new garden or lay down a bed of grass, getting a petrol rotovator is a great idea.

Rotovators, like most garden tools, come in different sizes. If you only have a small patch of land to work with, you can pick up a small tool. On the other hand, big jobs will require substantial pieces of machinery – in this case it is best to pick up a heavy duty hydraulic rotovator. Just be sure to choose something that you can operate yourself. You will need to push your rotovator around, so there is no point in buying a huge one if you can’t budge it. If you’re thinking about getting a big rotovator, also be sure that you have the room to store it when not in use.

You will also need to make your selection of what type of rotovator to buy with the condition of your soil in mind. If you are lucky enough to have a smooth, soft bed then you can get by with just about any machine. However, if the soil you are working with is hard and dry, you may need to invest in a more powerful rotovator, which will churn up even the toughest soil.

Also be sure to find a machine which is reliable and sturdy. For example, you can look for the Mantis brand, as they generally sell very good rotovators, while the now defunct Merry Tiller line is also a good option for used rotovators. If you only have a few jobs to do and don’t want to buy an expensive machine, you can go to tool hire websites to find great rotovators that can be rented on a daily basis. Renting a rotovator may be your best option if you don’t plan on using this piece of equipment very often and this is an option that many homeowners and garden enthusiasts select.

Rotovators are excellent tools which will make a noticeable difference to your seed beds. Buying or renting a rotovator is a crucial step in developing an amazing garden and can reap great rewards in terms of the ultimate health and beauty of your garden. These are, however, serious machines, so be sure to have safety in mind when operating them and make sure that children do not use this equipment unsupervised.

A leaf sweeper is one of the best pieces of garden equipment you can invest in to help achieve a beautiful lawn. It keeps your yard from getting buried under last season’s fallen debris or summer’s grass trimmings. Keeping your lawn’s appearance manicured and professionally maintained is effortless with the help of leaf sweepers.

The Basics

The leaf sweeper, or lawn sweeper as it is also known, is a mechanical implement used to collect debris such as fallen leaves, grass clippings or any litter from paved or level surfaces like a lawn. It is operated by a revolving mechanism that picks up the leaves or other debris and places it into a container for later discard.

Lawn leaf sweepers have two main types – manual or hand powered, and motorized. The motorized models can be further classified into a push or rolling leaf sweeper or a tow behind leaf sweeper. They can also be bought with a built-in shredder attached. Determining the best choice for you will depend on your needs.

Push leaf sweepers or hand-powered leaf sweepers use gears for the brush mechanism to rotate picking up debris and transferring it into an attached bag called a hopper. The height of the rollers can be adjusted so they can be used on different surfaces, including non-grassy areas such as patio slabs or stone walkways.

Powered lawn sweepers are similar to push lawn sweepers, except that they use gasoline, oil or electricity to operate the brush mechanism. These are ideal to use for larger lawns and gardens. The height of their rollers can also be modified. One disadvantage of powered lawn sweepers is the noise they generate.

A powered leaf collector with a shredder allows the user to produce mulch with the leaves that it collects. The shredder, however, limits it use on certain surfaces. Towed lawn sweepers operate very much like the others, but instead of being pushed, they need a small vehicle, such as a garden tractor, lawnmower or ATV to lug it around. The brush heights may be modified as well so it can be used on different surfaces.

Making the Decision to Buy

Spending money on a leaf lawn sweeper takes some consideration. In addition to what they cost, you also need to think about storage. Tow lawn sweepers use up a large space to store them. Because they are equipped with a large hamper or hopper, it is not simple to stow them away. Hand powered lawn sweepers, on the other hand, take up less space to store compared with towed sweepers. They are smaller and some can even be folded. Some are even light enough to hang on the wall right next to your garden tool rack.

Another benefit to choosing manual leaf sweepers over powered sweepers is that since they require no power, they are less harmful to the environment.

The size of your yard and how much debris you typically need to clean up will also help you figure out which is the best lawn sweeper to buy to meet your needs. Hopper size will also be determined by these factors.

Where you buy a lawn sweeper should also be considered. Look for a reputable supplier and look for manufacturers that offer good warranties. Warranties are important in case a problem arises. Availability of parts should also be considered. It’s also a good idea to check up front to see if finding leaf sweeper replacement parts is easy for the particular model you are considering. You don’t want to buy a model that you will later find out is near impossible to find parts for, leaving you stuck to buy a whole new apparatus down the road.

In addition to all of these considerations, lawn sweeper prices are another important factor to think about. The quality, type and model of your sweeper will depend on the money you are willing to spend.

Leaf Sweeper Maintenance

Different types of lawn and leaf sweepers have their own advantages and disadvantages, but one thing they have in common is their need for proper maintenance. Caring for your sweeper ensures that they deliver the best performance. Apart from this, keeping them well-maintained helps ensure that they last for a very long time.

Maintenance of leaf sweepers is as simple as following the directions in the User’s Manual which shows you how the machine is operated, cleaned and replaced with parts. Below are general instructions on cleaning your leaf sweeper, which is generally common to all models:

Before every use, inspect the overall condition of the sweeper. Check for damage, loose screws, misalignment, sticks or breaks in moving parts.

Oil the brush shaft bearings twice a year.

Clean the hopper. Dispose of everything in it after each use. Use a dry rag to clean the insides.

Avoid using it on wet leaves. If this happens, make sure to clean and wipe after use.

Clean the wheels regularly. Apply an even coat of light grease after. Make sure not to overtighten the wheel bolt and nut.

Clean the brushes. Remove the hopper first then wipe the brushes.

Wipe the sweeper down after every use. Just take a rag and wipe it off.

Store the leaf sweeper properly after use.

Proper Handling

It is also important to follow safety precautions for the health and safety of the user. Below is a list of general advice to follow:

Do not use leaf or lawn sweepers in extremely wet places.

Keep children away.

Use only identical replacement parts.

Do not use a leaf sweeper for any job except that for which it is intended.

Do not force the sweeper.

Store when not in use.

Do not perform any maintenance or make repairs while the sweeper is moving.

Green Living with Leaf Sweepers

One great benefit in using a leaf sweeper is its help in protecting the environment, especially those not powered by gas or oil. They do not emit fumes, and unlike leaf blowers or leaf vacuums, they do not add to carbon emissions, which increase the health risk for respiratory diseases.

Below are more environmental benefits of leaf sweepers:

Harvests weed seeds and reduce their growth, which in turn reduces the need for a chemical weed control service.

Reduces the aggravation of allergy and hay fever because of grass clippings.

Reduces health problems such as asthma and hay fever because of grass, tree and weed pollen.

Reduces the risk of fires because of debris.

Helps eliminate potential breeding grounds for insects like flies.

Some debris can become potential sources of alternative fuel. Grass, for example, is now being converted into bio crude oil.

Collected debris can also be made into mulch or compost. Compost is any organic matter that has been decayed for use of aiding the growth of plants and trees in particular. Mulch on the other hand is used to suppress growth, weeds specifically, and should not have undergone decomposition.

To make compost, collect shredded leaves and place them in a compost bin. Mix and water the ingredients. Turn the mixture over and swap the layers to ensure that decomposition becomes even. Once decomposed thoroughly, transfer it to another container.

To make mulch, just shred leaves and they are ready to use. Unlike compost, you do not need to do any treatments on it once placed in a bin.

Keeping your backyard and garden clean and your lawn looking perfectly manicured takes a lot of effort and time, and buying a leaf sweeper will probably be the best investment you will ever make in this aspect.

There are few experiences that can compare to time spent enjoying a peaceful and relaxing evening in a wicker rocker or swing in the comfort of your own porch or in your backyard, especially after a hard day’s work. This perfect piece of furniture completes a tranquil atmosphere and helps to soothe away the aches of the day.

Rocking chairs are one of the most cherished pieces of furniture brought into a home because of their functionality, style and comfort. A rocker is a chair that traditionally has two curved pieces attached on the bottom that allows the occupant to rock back and forth. The wicker rocker is the earliest of its kind and has its own particular charm.

The first use of a wicker rocker was in England and was documented in 1725, where wicker rockers were originally installed in gardens. Wicker rockers originated from early creations in Windsor Castle in the early 1700s, and thus earned the moniker of Windsor rockers. These chairs were designed with a round hoop back, with spindles reminiscent of birdcages and a comb-shaped headrest and were made from natural fibers. In North America, the wicker rocker appeared in the early 18th century and reached the peak of its production in the mid-18th century. Wicker rockers became famous for their creative designs and craftsmanship. Although they were originally also made from natural fibers in North America, the introduction of resin rockers added increased functionality and durability to this old-world furniture style.

A wicker rocker has long been known as a prized possession of mothers who love to sit in one while they rock their babies to sleep. Beyond the nursery, it is an accent piece of great value, not only within the house but outdoors as well. Nowadays, an outdoor wicker rocker is a common component of many outdoor patio furniture sets, and many homeowners that sport a front porch on their home love to include outdoor wicker rockers as part of the charming exterior decor.

A wicker rocker is typically made from stiff or fibrous plants, which can be blended with resin or plastic. It is woven or threaded to create a strong base used for both outdoor and indoor furnishing purposes. It is lightweight and resilient, as well as being relatively inexpensive. There are basically two types of wicker rockers – natural and synthetic. Natural fiber wicker rockers are made from the vines of rattan. Synthetic wicker rockers are made from pliable tensile wire, fused with plastic and resin to make them stiff. This type is often referred to as a resin wicker rocker, is less expensive than its natural fiber counterpart, and is often the type chosen for outdoor use.

Synthetic wicker rockers made of resin are the best choice for the outdoors. Outdoor wicker rockers need to withstand tough weather conditions, and unlike natural wicker rockers, resin rockers don’t dry out in the sun or get beaten up by rain, wind or snow. To clean a resin wicker rocker, all you have to do is just hose it off, so maintenance is easy. If they’re really dirty, you can use a little soap as well and scrub the dirt off, but that’s all the maintenance they really need. These rockers are also built to last. Always keep in mind though that it is best to store them away when not in use for long periods of time, whether they are made of natural or synthetic materials, to keep them looking their best. If, however, you have your rocker on a porch with a porch awning or you have a patio cover over your patio, you can leave the rockers out year round with less likelihood of them being damaged because they are protected from the elements.

Outdoor resin wicker rockers come in many colors so it is easy to find one that blends well with the color scheme of your home’s design. Natural wicker rockers, on the other hand, can be painted any color you would like, but will require regular paint jobs and sealing to keep their appearance looking fresh and new.

Like many types of furniture, wicker rockers may also be custom-made to suit the interior or exterior design of the house, although you can usually find one you like that has already been manufactured. Custom models are usually made from natural materials and are hand woven according to your specifications. Custom wicker rocker prices may be relatively more affordable than other types of custom-made rockers, but anything custom-made will still typically carry a fairly hefty price tag. Just remember that a general rule still applies – the higher the quality and the more unique the design, the higher the price usually is.

A wicker rocker not only serves as a practical and functional piece of furniture inside or outside the house, but it also exudes a feeling of love, comfort and style to bring peace and relaxation into your home. It is one of those pieces of furniture that truly adds character and charm to your home, much in the same way as a stone fireplace adds warmth and coziness, which is why it is one of the most common types of furniture to be passed down from generation to generation. So, whether you opt for a natural fiber or synthetic wicker rocker, you are sure to have a piece of furniture that can be enjoyed not only for the comfort it offers, but for the charm that it adds to your home.

A beautiful backyard and garden takes time and great effort to cultivate and most of that effort is spent on weed control. Weeds are unwanted plants that grow in your garden. They are like pests, overcrowding other plants and taking away nutrients, water and light. The simplest method to kill these harmful plants is by pulling them out. But many people do not have the time or the patience it takes to do this effectively. Thus, the most effective way of removing weeds is by hiring a professional weed control service.

There are many companies that offer professional advice and services to help you maintain your lawn and garden, including weed control services and pest control services. Apart from gardens, they also may offer lawn weed control and maintenance for your grass.

There are many ways to stop weeds from overrunning your garden and many types of landscape supplies that you can buy to suppress the growth of weeds. One method is the use of chemical weed killers that are usually sprayed on the plants. But because of growing environmental and safety concerns, many are switching to organic weed control.

Below are typical methods used by a weed control service to manage weeds organically:

Manually pulling weeds

Regulating the delivery of water with the use of rubber hoses and other methods directly to plant roots to limit the weed’s access to water

Tilling and plowing around plants mechanically with the use of tractors at various periods in the cultivation process

Rotating crops with ones that kill weeds by choking them out, such as hemp (this works better on a farm than in your backyard, however)

Mulching or the use of weed mats, which are made of fibrous materials such as cloth bark or newspaper placed on top of the soil to prevent weeds from growing to the surface

One popular weed control service method used to destroy weeds organically is the use of herbicides. Through the use of various equipment on the ground, or even in the air, herbicides are applied directly on plants. Common organic herbicides include spices, vinegar, steam, flame, citrus oil and many others. Major herbicides used by professionals include 2,4-D, aminopyralid , atrazine, clopyralid , dicamba, Glufosinate ammonium, Fluroxypyr, Glyphosate, Imazapyr, Imazapic,Linuron , Metolachlor, Paraquat, Pendimethalin, Picloram, Sodium chlorate and Triclopyr.

Herbicides can be classified in many ways. Contact herbicides kill only the plant directly in contact with the chemical. These generally are the fastest acting herbicides but are less effective on perennial plants. Systemic herbicides are translocated through the plant, either from foliar application down to the roots, or from soil application up to the leaves. They are slow acting and can easily manage perennial plants. Soil-applied herbicides are absorbed by the roots of the plant and are applied directly to the soil. These are just some of the options that a weed control service will consider in helping you combat weeds in your lawn and garden.

Weeds are the worst enemy of garden and lawn owners. So to relieve yourself from the hassle of dealing with them, go to a professional weed control service company and let them get the job done right, so you can just sit back and enjoy your weed-free landscaping and your beautiful garden decor.

Wrought iron furniture is the best choice to add elegance and class to any outdoor setting, with its stylish curves and ornate designs. It is a perfect accent piece that complements any backyard and garden décor.

The existence of wrought iron furniture dates back to the Roman Empire. Its popularity in Great Britain was first documented with the installation of wrought iron gates in the Westminster Abbey in London in the Thirteenth Century. Its fame peaked during the reign of William and Mary in the Seventeenth Century with the widespread adaptation of imported artisans of Baroque style in gates and railings. However, in the 1970’s, its status declined with the emergence of cast iron and cheaper steel.

Wrought iron furniture is available in various styles to match any setting, for both interior and exterior settings. Furniture made from wrought iron is often handcrafted – made by heating iron and bending or hammering it into beautiful shapes and designs. It is an art form still prevalent to this time.

The most common furniture for outdoor use may be found on the patio or in the garden. Wrought iron garden furniture was particularly popular in the 19th century during the Victorian era. The garden’s theme may be reflected in the intricate vinework of the furniture. Traditional pieces that may be used to add to this romantic feel include items such as small benches or a set of two chairs and a table tucked into a tranquil corner.

Wrought iron patio furniture is best utilized for enjoying a leisurely gathering on your patio, porch or veranda. Dining sets are the most popular for these settings, the most current trend of which is bistro style tables with high chairs. For a more relaxed and easy atmosphere, a low table paired with a chaise lounge is a great choice. No matter what style you choose, you can find outdoor patio furniture and outdoor dining furniture options in wrought iron that will add beauty and style to your outdoor spaces.

Wrought iron patio or garden furniture is an excellent choice for outdoor home décor, especially because of its understated beauty and its durability – it can withstand tough weather and lots of wear and tear. Most wrought iron outdoor patio furniture is manufactured with a protective coating, usually paint or a clear sealant that can endure the high heat of the sun or the driving force of wind and rain. Quality wrought iron outdoor furniture is solid and heavy and can survive being outdoors for long periods of time. In fact, vintage wrought iron patio furniture is sought after to add a touch of shabby chic, or an antiquated or heirloom “feel” to a backyard design, and since it is so durable, it will still be in good shape long after it initially leaves the store.

Another appeal of wrought iron furniture, in addition to its style and durability, is its comfortable fit. Being handcrafted, it can be shaped to follow the natural contour of the body for a more easy and relaxing fit. For a cushier feel, wrought iron furniture cushions are readily available to match your needs and to make the furniture even more comfortable. Furniture and patio chair cushions also jazz up your décor for that instant design fix and splash of color.

The most typical type of wrought iron furniture available in markets includes dining sets composed of a table and chairs, which is best for entertaining. Another trendy addition to your outdoor furnishings is wrought iron lawn furniture, such as lawn chairs for a more casual and laid back atmosphere, perfect for backyards or a snooze by the pool. A wrought iron porch swing adds a romantic touch to any porch, or to add nostalgia to your patio or veranda, a vintage wrought iron rocking chair is another perfect addition and rivals the look of a wicker rocker. For a more leisurely get together, low chaise lounges with a center table are ideal. As you can see, you are not very limited since the furniture comes in many different styles.

Wrought iron furniture prices can vary considerably, depending on quality, style, size, and whether the furniture is new or restored. Despite its being of the purest form of iron, poor workmanship degrades its quality. To acquire high quality wrought iron furniture, check the furniture joints for strength and the finish for proper coverage, because by investing in quality pieces, you can enjoy your outdoor wrought iron furniture for a long, long time.

Perhaps you already have a treasured wooden rocking chair that was handed down to you from your grandparents, or maybe you just purchased a brand new rocking chair that you can’t wait to start spending time in. Either way, caring for your favorite outdoor rocking chair takes a little bit of maintenance and some knowledge to care for it.

To begin with, if you haven’t purchased your rocking chair yet, choose an appropriate material for your outdoor rocking chair such as teak, cedar, redwood or cherry. These types of materials will help your wooden rocking chair stand up to the elements for years and will reduce the amount of time you spend maintaining it.

If you’re like many people, it’s the time of year when you start digging out the outdoor patio furniture in preparation for the summer bbq’s, parties and gatherings. If you are one of those folks that need to get your wooden rocking chairs out of storage and get them fixed up so you can relax and enjoy on a summer Saturday afternoon enjoying your backyard and garden, read on for some useful tips on how to get that done.

Mold is your outdoor wooden rocking chair’s enemy and this is one of the first things you should look for prior to sprucing up your chair. If you live in an area with high humidity and moisture, check your chair carefully. To help prevent mold from forming in the first place, spray a solution of vinegar and water over the chair in areas where mold may form, and especially on the undersides of the chair. Let the chair dry completely in the sun before stowing it away.

Chances are that you will need to clean up your rocking chair and apply some sort of finish to revitalize it before using it again this season. Here are some tips for preparing and finishing your chair properly:

Use a coarse grade sand paper to smooth out rough spots or remove any peeling paint.

After sanding, clean furniture by either power washing it if it’s extremely dirty (but be careful if it’s a painted surface since this could peel off the paint), or brushing with a bit of soap and water (which will usually get the majority of dirt and grime off). Use a quality wood cleaner that you can find at your local hardware store, such as Murphy’s oil soap, if you don’t want to use soap and water.

Let furniture dry completely after washing.

Make sure furniture is clean and dry prior to applying any type of paint or stain. Oil based stains or paints work best for outdoor rocking chairs.

Finally, use a sealer so your chair will last much longer – look for one that provides water repellent properties.

Give your wooden chair a good inspection to find any areas that may have become loose such as spindles or joints that may require repair or just re-gluing. Wood putty can be used to fill in any damaged areas.

You should also keep your wood furniture out of the rain as much as possible, even though many of the woods used in outdoor chairs are very good at weathering the elements. Use outdoor furniture covers or store under a patio cover to prolong the life of your wooden rocking chair. Store the chairs inside during winter months if possible, or in a garage or shed, making sure your rocking chair is clean and dry prior to storage to avoid mold.

Remember the better you care for your outdoor furniture, including wicker rockers and wooden rocking chairs in particular, the more seasons and years of enjoyment you will spend rocking and relaxing in comfort. Maybe you will even decide to pass your rocking chair down to the next generation since the loving care you’ve given it over the years will make it a wonderful family heirloom.

Kimberly Aardal writes reviews about white porch rockers and outdoor rocking chairs, in addition to many other types of chairs. She is the publisher of EveryDayRockingChairs.com and when she’s not rocking in her favorite black rocking chair, she is hiking and exploring the mountains of Colorado.

Porch awnings are becoming more and more popular nowadays as many people recognize the value of having such structures. Aside from extending the functionality of homes, they give just the right touch of class without being overly snobbish. Having these awnings in place portrays the feeling that people are indeed welcome to your home, and a covered porch also offers quite a bit of additional usable space outside your home.

For one, porch awnings serve as a backup to your perfectly-made plans that can easily be ruined by just a bit of bad weather. Just imagine planning for an afternoon of tea with your book club friends or a romantic dinner under the stars or an afternoon of birthday party fame, only to have rain ruin the festivities. But, if you have a porch awning in place, you can plan for any occasion without having to think of a plan B.

Since porch awnings are externally attached, they can be removed when you want and reattached again (some are easier to remove and install than others, so if this is something you want to do, consider the type of porch awning to buy). You can do this somewhat with ease because the awnings are made of materials which are easy to handle. If you opt for roll up porch awnings, then you can simply roll up the awning when not needed and there is no need to remove it when not needed.

Another nice feature is that fabric porch awnings also offer the leniency of design modification whenever you feel like it. If you want to renovate your home, you can always make your porch awning fit your new style by simply getting a replacement awning canopy in the color and style of your liking. Whenever you feel like redoing your painting, you can get an awning with a complimentary color or a contrasting color to really set the awning off and make a more decorative statement. Whatever modification you might think of doing to the exterior of your home, you can make these structures fit your new style.

Some people use their creative side and experiment with porch awnings and the covered space they create below. With the right furniture and accessories, a porch can become a dining area or even an office, where interaction can be dynamic and lively. If you have a more permanent porch awning, like one made of wood, an outdoor chandelier or some shades can add an interior decor look to the space. You can turn the space below a covered porch awning into almost anything you want – a playroom, an outside family room, or just about anything you want.

Adding an awning can bring so much to your home and can allow you to maximize the use of your porch space. The best part of all is that having this extra space will cost you so little yet give you so much to work with. So by choosing porch awnings for home use, you can provide more than simply a covering for a particular space. Adding a porch awning can bring a whole new dimension to the word multi-function, and can add a whole new style to the exterior of your home.
