The only problem is that I can’t help but to think of the cost of maintaining everything.  I mean, think about the fertilizer, special seeds, and constant attention to make sure everything grows right.  Plus, the construction and maintenance costs for things like pools and decks can really add up quickly and the numbers can be staggering.  So, I started looking for different ways to save money on my dream landscape.

The first thing that came to mind was lighting.  Certainly with all the types of garden lighting and landscape lighting available, I was sure to find a way that I could get something I liked while still saving some money.  So, I decided that instead of tapping into my homes electricity and increasing my electric bill, I could go green and use solar powered garden lighting.  Supposedly, these lights are both stylish, efficient, and they get the job done.

Another great benefit is that they’re powered by the sun.  I mean, you can’t get more environmentally friendly than that!  Plus, it costs basically nothing for you to have to install them.  The solar powered unit is housed inside of the light so that you can place them anywhere.  You just have to stake them into the area you want to light at night, and you’re good to go – no need to hire an expensive electrician.  Oops, almost forgot, you just have to make sure the lighting unit is exposed to direct sunlight during the day so that the battery charges, but that’s about it.

Now, when you think of most solar powered tools and appliances, you may think of terrible design.  That may have been the case in the past, but that’s not the case with the solar landscape lighting on the market today.  To be honest, you wouldn’t even notice the difference between most of the solar models and the electricity powered models.

And, did I tell you how they don’t cost a lot of money?  With the advancement of technology, the batteries specifically, the costs of solar landscape lights has decreased dramatically.  They cost close to the same amount as electricity-based landscape lights. After all, I went into the decision to use solar powered lighting because I was looking for ways to save money on my landscape paradise, right?

So there you have it – solar powered lighting is a real winner!  You get to save money on the lights themselves, the installation costs, the cost of operating them, and you have to sacrifice little when it comes to performance.  And you know what that means?  It means that using solar powered landscape lights frees up some money to focus on some of the other exciting elements of my backyard and garden oasis and allows me to spend money on the landscape supplies I truly want!

The different kinds of light can transform the way that plants look, so it makes sense to position those plants to receive the maximum benefit.  There are many easy-care plants that will help with the correct lighting that you are trying to get.  The same plant can look different depending on whether it is lit from behind or in front.  The individual flowers of Stipa gigantea, for example, shimmer in the light, especially when seen against a darker background, while nearer to the ground, salvias, with their rows of calyces after the flowers have fallen, seem to come alive when lit from behind.  A plant can also have a number of different faces if it is illuminated at only specific times of day.  Yet these dramatic transformations are often denied the attention of the spectator simply because the plant is poorly positioned.

The flower and seedheads of grasses catch light easily, and look especially beautiful when they are wet and covered in hundreds of beads of moisture.  So, you can either plant rows of grasses like molinia and calamagrostis, to catch light in this way, or scatter them throughout a planting to provide highlights.  Clumps of miscanthus will glow silver in the winter.  Monardas and asters are lightcatchers too, with each individual flower transmitting the light slightly differently, depending on whether the light is coming from in front or from behind.

Light is very transitory.  In summer, it can be very harsh and unflattering during the middle of the day, so early morning and evening light tend to produce better effects.  It is easier to appreciate the quality of colors in these moderate lights, too, although the two ends of the spectrum behave in very different ways.  Blues are very effective under a low light, while reds become darker and darker until they eventually disappear.

Autumn and winter lights are low, illuminating plants from the side.  They are also weak and around for only a relatively short period each day.  Plant growth is often thinner, however, so this low light has more opportunity to create subtle effects, creeping in among the plants and playing on parts that summer light does not, simply because there is less growth to get in the way.

Potted plants are a great place to start if you don’t have a lot of space or your outside area is covered over with paving slabs or gravel.  You can choose a style of pot to suit the theme you’re going for – anything from oriental bamboo to modern stainless steel.  Garden pots can be moved easily, so it’s no problem to change things around a little for a different look or even to take your whole garden with you if you move to another house.

Lighting is something that many people don’t even consider when planning their garden, but it can really transform your outdoor space into something magical at night.  Consider using dim floor level lamps to mark out a pathway or putting fairy lights in a tree for a romantic atmosphere.  Again, you have an advantage with a small space in that you don’t need to spend a lot on outside lighting to completely change the look of your garden.

It really only takes a creative imagination and a small amount of money to transform your small garden into a mini paradise, whether you stay simple with well-arranged potted plants or make things a bit more fancy with water features for the garden and special lighting.  And the best thing is that with a little planning, your transformation can be complete within a weekend so you can just get out and enjoy!

When you start to shop around for garden pond pumps, you need to know how many gallons your pond is.  If you have no idea, there is a simple formula you can use.  While measuring in feet, multiply the length times the width times the depth and multiply this total by 7.48.  For example, a pond that is 10 feet long, 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep would be 10 x 5 x 2 x 7.48 = 748 gallons.  It is important to know how many gallons your pond is because the pond pumps are rated by how many gallons per hour (or GPH) they pump.  You want to pump at least half your pond total once an hour though ideally, you want it closer to the entire volume.  A 1000 gallon pond should have a pump rated at 1000 GPH. Small ponds (1000 gallons or less) work well with submersible pumps, but if you have a large pond, you may want to look into external pumps.

Another important factor to consider are the different types of garden pond filters that are available.  Mechanical filtration removes debris like leaves by passing water through a skimmer or large pore open cell foam.  Chemical filtration uses materials like carbon to trap particles and remove chemical contaminants.  Biological filtration is the most important.  It uses the nitrogen cycle to break down and detoxify organic waste.

If you are not familiar with the nitrogen cycle, it would be wise to study it.  Basically, it creates colonies of beneficial bacteria in your pond to keep the water healthy.  There are many models available that combine these features and different filtration types.  For example, some pond filters have two chambers.  One chamber has a sponge which traps debris (mechanical) and beneficial bacteria (biological) grow here.  The empty chamber is used for chemical filtration when needed.  Pond filters are either submersible or external.  Submersibles work better on smaller ponds while external filters are required for large ponds.

When choosing a pump or filter remember, these operate 365 days a year.  Cheap models may end up costing more if they fail.  Look for warranties that last longer than one year.  If you are shopping for external options, ask how loud they are.  Remember, your pond is supposed to invite serenity and reflection, not maintenance issues.

Having a garden pond in your own backyard is a great luxury, but in order to really be able to enjoy it, you must make sure that the pond operates properly and stays clean.  By knowing some of the basics of garden pond filters and garden pond pumps, you are well on your way to making sure you have just what you need to keep your garden pond functioning at optimal levels.

For example, if you have ever dreamt of getting, or making, a sundial, now is the time to do it.  In a garden shop you will find plenty of different kinds of sundials, or if you really want to be different, you can Google instructions on making your own sundial and create it from large rocks and perhaps even tall potted plants – the sky is the limit, literally!

Ever thought of having a fountain, but thought that it may be too much upkeep?  Well, gone are the days where you have to haul buckets of yucky water out of fountains where the water has gone bad, or you need to scrub hard concrete from summertime algae or install intricate piping.  These days, you can go to a store and buy a simple-to-install-and-run fountain that basically works out-of-the-box.  You won’t need to do anything fancy to install a new style garden fountain these days, unless you deliberately go out of your way to get an awkward or complicated model.

Finally, consider getting a gazing ball.  Never heard of that?  Well, they’re shiny balls, made of shiny rock or metal, which reflect the sun’s shine or the moon’s glow, and give your garden a magical and other-worldly feel.  Your outdoor space will surely be interesting and unique if you place a beautiful gazing ball somewhere in your garden.

There are many ways that you can add interest to your garden decor and make it the unique and magical place you’ve always dreamt about enjoying right outside your own home.  All you need is a little bit of imagination!

And the only thing that improves on garden statues and can really make them even more interesting is building your own garden statue.  That’s right – it’s not for the faint of heart – but DIY garden statues can be a lot of fun to build.  Like many things, designing and building your own garden statuary can be as simple or as complicated as you like.  The measure of success is in how much fun you have with the process – and not necessarily what the quality of the end result is.

Start by studying your garden.  Exactly what type of statue is it looking for?  Something abstract?  Or maybe a human figure pining over the rose bushes?  Do you want a large statue or a small one?  What’s it going to call attention to – the garden statue itself or the plants nearby?  Will the statue sit in front of any type of garden buildings or amongst the flowers, or will it sit out in the open on its own?What kind of pedestal will it need?   Your garden design plan should readily accommodate your statue needs.

Once you know what the garden needs, it’s time to start brainstorming.  Pull out some paper and a pen and get to work.  Throw every image you can come up with down on paper.  Don’t edit yourself – not at this stage.  See what your brain is capable of and then pick something you like and begin to refine and narrow it.  The more detail you have at this stage, the easier the subsequent stages will go.

The nuts and bolts work comes when you build the armature.  This is a plywood and chicken wire frame that sort of acts as your statue’s skeleton.  This will loosely approximate the final shape of the figure.  Once it’s all set, begin to add the actual material of the sculpture.  This can be plaster of paris, wax, or even concrete!

Once your garden statue is finished, then it’s time to decorate it.  Again, your taste and enjoyment is all that matters.  You can paint it any color you like – you can even slap a beach hat on it!  Feel free to add jewels, shells or rocks to the finished statue to give that extra bit of pizzazz.

Then just sit back and enjoy your creation.  While your own DIY garden statue may not be considered a work of art by some, it should bring you enjoyment each time you are sitting out in your garden and you look at your creative outlet and think to yourself, “I made that!”  After all, aren’t garden statues just an outlet for someone’s self expression?  If they happen to enhance your garden decor as well, then that should be considered an added bonus!
