Aside from plants, patio paving is one of the most important elements that can set the mood and rhythm of your outdoor design. There are many materials that can be used in paving your patio. Among them are bricks, natural stone, concrete and concrete blocks, manufactured patio pavers, patio slabs, and more. Each has its own distinct characteristics, but all of them come in various designs, colors and textures so you have many options to choose from.

Patio paving can be one of the most expensive items in your landscaping budget, so it is wise to consider carefully and prepare well before starting any patio paving design and installation project.

First think about the location and purpose of the area you want to pave. Will it be a small patio made to house just a few chairs, a large expanse that will include an outdoor kitchen along with some outdoor dining furniture, a patio surrounding an inground pool area or a meandering garden path? This will help identify the type of patio pavers you should use. Natural stones, for example, are not ideal for compression sensitive areas or those areas that get tremendous amounts of wear and tear. Patio paving stones, on the other hand, can be made from most kinds of stone – cast, natural or reconstituted – and are ideal for almost all applications and are more durable.

A natural patio paving stone is quarried and can be scaled into various sizes and shapes for different pattern layouts. Sandstone, slate, granite and limestone are some of the most common of the natural patio paving materials used. Travertine tiles can also be used in some climates. All of these natural materials are strong enough to last and to withstand hard use.

Cast patio pavers are made of concrete, clay or reconstituted stone. Reconstituted stones are a mixture of concrete and stones and are less expensive than natural stones. They are easy to install and are less prone to cracking, but they offer a bit less creativity and natural design. There are other patio paving materials as well, such as brick, concrete blocks, stamped concrete, and patio paving slabs, to choose from as well.

Making sure that the materials you choose blend well with the other design elements in your backyard or garden is very important. Cost is another consideration in the selection of materials for patio paving. For garden patio paving, gravel is an inexpensive option but needs considerable weed maintenance, sometimes even requiring a regular weed control service to keep things looking good. Concrete requires some skill and special equipment for proper installation but can still be cheaper than natural stone, and if you opt for stamped concrete, it can offer the same basic look. Patio paving slabs can be more economical than individual stones, bricks or blocks. Brick, tile, granite and other natural stones are very decorative, but are more expensive patio paving options. Block paving is another pricey option but gives you lots of versatility in design.

After choosing the best patio paving material, draw up a plan for what you want your finished patio to look like. This will save you time, money and effort. Your plan will help determine the sizing of the finished space, the pattern of the materials, the amount of materials needed and any patio paving equipment required to properly complete the job.

Once you’ve decided on your patio design and materials, you then need to decide whether you will do the installation yourself or will hire a professional. If you are hiring a patio paving contractor, make sure to only hire accredited contractors. You should get at least 3 quotes to price out the job and should ask for references. Conduct an inspection of their previous work, or better yet, ask your friends and neighbors for referrals. If you are opting for a DIY patio paving job instead, make sure you understand all aspects of the job, have the proper tools needed (you can rent some if you don’t have them) and follow proper safety precautions when operating any tools or equipment. Patio paving is not an easy job, so be sure that you are ready to tackle the task on your own.

Once you have completed your patio, you then have to consider some regular maintenance of it to keep it looking its best. What you need to do will depend on what type of patio paving material you have chosen. If you opted for individual patio pavers or bricks, you may have to continuously keep up with weed growth between the cracks. Some patio paving materials require sealers to keep the patio looking its best. Some paving choices require virtually no maintenance at all other than an occasional cleaning.

No matter what materials you choose, you will need to keep your paved patio clean. This typically requires just a spray of the garden hose. Most patio paving materials cannot withstand the force of a high powered pressure washer, so take care in using them or don’t use them at all. Some paving materials can use a periodic scrubbing with a mild soap to remove stains, dirt or mildew.

Installing a new patio, pool surround, or walkway in your garden area is a major home improvement project and one that comes with many options – as well as large expenses. With so many patio paving options available, however, it is fairly simple to find a look you like while remaining within a specified budget. Just take the time to look at examples of other patios to decide what you like best, what fits well with the rest of your backyard and garden décor, and what materials will hold up best in the climate in which you live. By doing a bit of homework up front, you should be able to enjoy your new patio for many years to come.

With all of the beautiful natural materials for tiling available, it can often be difficult to decide which one to use. However, a good choice is natural stone slate tile for almost anywhere, whether indoors or outdoors. A nice thing about this type of tile is its versatility, not only in color, but also in how it can be used. It is durable and very easy to cut, and those two characteristics make it a viable option for the home.

People often put slate floor tile in the kitchen for its durability, and also for the beauty of its color, which has a natural tone in a variety of earthy colors. Often a single color is used throughout, or a few different colors of slate are combined to achieve an aesthetically pleasing look.

Again, because of its durability, it works well in bathrooms where the slate tile may encounter more stress and use. Slate is naturally slip resistant, so it works well around water, where some of the other natural stones may be dangerous because they get too slippery.

Just as it works well around showers and tubs, natural slate tile works great outdoors. It is, of course, weather resistant being a natural stone, and because of its slip resistance, is safe to use around pools or other water features. It looks beautiful on a patio, as all of the natural colors will mimic nature’s beauty around it and the tile is also a great way to surround your inground pool. And natural slate tile is so durable and weather resistant that it is even used as a roofing material on some homes.

The variations of natural stone slate tile really make it a stunning stone to work with. It is formed naturally with layers of colors that vary within the stone. Many of the colors found in nature are found in this stone, ranging from deep blacks and dark grays to reddish golds.

The surface of natural slate tile can vary like the color, and can range from polished and smooth to a rugged, uneven look. With the beauty, the durability, and the versatility of this stone, slate is a great option for many places both outside and inside the home.

Travertine pavers are the perfect solution for a walkway that needs good footing (especially if it rains a lot where you live), while also offering the benefit of having an interesting pattern, color, and overall appearance. Of course, you can just lay out some of those boring, grey concrete pavers that look like leftovers from an office building project if you are only looking for a hard surface that has some traction. Concrete pavers are fairly cheap and they look cheap. If, on the other hand, you want something more than just a durable paver to walk on – want something that also adds interest to your walkway and therefore your exterior decor – then it is worthwhile to look into using travertine pavers.

Travertine is a sedimentary stone which is formed over millions of years by minerals being laid down at the bottom of hot spring pools. As the hot water travels through the earth, it leaches out the surrounding chemicals. Then this mineral laden water erupts through the earth’s surface and forms in pools. As the water evaporates, it leaves these minerals which build up over time into layers of many colors and patterns. At some point in the future, these pools are covered over by debris and earth. The resulting pressure on the sediment compacts it and forms stone. This stone is then quarried and cut into pavers and travertine tiles.

The travertine pavers come in a variety of natural earth tones, which makes matching them to your backyard décor very easy. One way of laying the pavers that looks really interesting is to lay the travertine pavers along the walkway at a distance which will match a short stride, and then to surround them with small crushed rock of a different color. This sets off the color and patterns found in the pavers very nicely. I have also seen a small rounded river rock used for this filler, which again adds a nice touch.

It is also nice, if you wind up using the travertine pavers to form a walkway in your backyard, to also add some travertine tiles in other locations nearby to compliment the walkway. You can use the tiles along the front of an outdoor stone fireplace or as a decorative element in an outdoor kitchen, for example. Since travertine has such a natural look and feel and comes in so many different color palettes, you can find a multitude of uses outdoors for this beautiful stone.

So, if you want something different than a poured concrete walkway, and something more decorative and attractive looking than plain concrete pavers, then using travertine pavers can add a pleasing look to any area. Travertine pavers are also very durable and do not require much care once they are laid down. It is worth looking into using this natural and versatile stone for your next outdoor project, whether it is for a walkway or another area that would benefit from the attractive stone pavers.

Travertine is a beautiful and natural stone that is often used indoors on floors, backsplashes and even walls in the bathroom and kitchen. Travertine tiles can also be used outdoors on patios, outdoor kitchens, stone fireplaces, walkways, inground pool surrounds and as exterior home siding, and they provide a natural feel to any space. Using travertine tiles outdoors can add interest to your exterior décor, but a few points need to be kept in mind before making the decision to use travertine over other types of natural stone.

Travertine tile is a porous natural stone in the limestone family that comes in a number of different finishes and colors. Travertine tile finishes include tumbled, honed, polished and brushed. Colors vary from shades of ivory and beige to golds, reds, and walnut colors. For outdoor purposes, polished travertine is not often used due to its smooth and shiny finish. Tumbled travertine tile, brushed travertine tile, and honed travertine tile are the finishes of choice for outdoor use. The main difference is that honed travertine has a flat, smooth finish while the other two types have a textured finish, so honed travertine is not often used on floor surfaces outdoors due to its potential to be slippery when wet.

One consideration in choosing travertine tiles for your outdoor space is that the tiles are porous and therefore will naturally retain water that then becomes trapped within the tile. This makes them a less popular choice in areas that have regular freeze and thaw cycles, since any water that is trapped within the tile can cause the tile to crack when the external temperature causes the trapped water to freeze. This problem is more likely to arise with travertine floor tiles (used on patios and walkways) than on travertine wall tiles (used on exterior walls), since horizontally installed tiles are more likely to trap water.

One solution to the problem of moisture and water when installing travertine tile outdoors is to seal the tile. Sealing travertine tile not only helps to keep moisture out but also makes cleaning the tiles easier. This is especially true of tumbled travertine, which is more prone to collect dirt due to its textured finish. If sealed, cleaning travertine tile outdoors requires a periodic hosing down of the tile, along with a brushing to loosen up some of the debris.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that travertine is softer than some other natural stone products. While this is not as much of an issue when installing travertine as siding on a home or installing a travertine tile backsplash in your outdoor kitchen, it may be an issue if you are installing the tile as the flooring on your patio, where outdoor patio furniture will be moved around often and may scratch or chip the tiles. This is not to say that travertine is a soft stone. It is a durable stone that has been used on the exteriors of buildings dating back to Roman times – it just may be more likely to scratch or chip than other natural stones.

Choosing the finish for your travertine tiles will depend on the location in which they are being used and the look you are interested in achieving. Honed travertine tiles have a smooth texture with a matte finish, so they can become slippery when wet and are not the best choice for a patio floor. They are a great choice, however, for kitchen countertops and backsplashes, outdoor shower walls, or exterior siding. Brushed or tumbled travertine tiles are a better solution for patios and walkways due to their rougher and more natural texture and better slip resistance.

Laying travertine tiles requires a similar installation method to most other natural stone choices, with the one exception that if it is laid in a location subject to freezing temperatures it should not be set with mortar. When any moisture inside of the stone freezes, it expands and can pop the mortar joints. It is best to install travertine tiles over a solid uniform surface outside, such as a concrete patio slab. Laying travertine tiles can be performed by do-it-yourselfers that have the knowledge of how to properly lay any type of natural stone product, or of course can be handled by professional installers.

Despite the fact that there are some aspects of using travertine tiles that should be kept in mind in relation to moisture retention and the strength of the tile, travertine tile installation is very popular on the exterior of many homes due to its sheer beauty. It is a more appropriate material choice in climates that are not subject to freezing, but if care is taken to properly seal the tile, it can be used in colder climates as well.

You can buy travertine tile from landscaping supply companies, hardscaping suppliers, natural stone suppliers, quarries, garden centers, and home improvement stores. You can even buy travertine tiles online, although it is usually best to use the internet to locate local suppliers in the area and compare prices and selection available (such as color, finishes and sizes), since the weight of travertine tiles doesn’t make them easy to ship inexpensively (unless you are purchasing a small quantity). Travertine mosaic tiles (for backsplashes), and travertine floor tile or wall tile can be purchased online and shipped, but if you are looking to complete an entire patio or large walkway or are planning to side the whole front of your home, buying travertine tiles online is probably not the best option and you should look for places that sell travertine tiles in bulk or discount travertine tile if you order over a certain quantity.

Travertine tiles have been used for thousands of years on the exteriors of buildings and homes and create a beautiful and natural finish, with warm, rich colors and varying textures. As long as a few considerations are kept in mind before deciding where to use travertine tiles in your outdoor space, you can enjoy the beauty and durability of this natural stone for years to come.

There are many uses for concrete blocks. Concrete block construction can include anything from retaining walls and patios to outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, swimming pools, buildings and homes, and more. Depending on what type of project you are looking to complete, there are different types of concrete blocks available for use.

Concrete blocks can be used for almost any structural purpose. Depending on the intended use, there are different types of concrete blocks available, although basic concrete block construction is typically handled in a similar fashion. Concrete blocks are strong, durable, easy to install, and an economic option for many types of building projects.

Concrete blocks are made from a concrete mixture comprised primarily of Portland cement mixed with sand, gravel and water. They can also have pigmentation added to make them various colors, and can have other additives or agents included to give the blocks additional qualities. The concrete mixture is molded into concrete block forms and then is cured and dried. The resulting concrete blocks are low maintenance, fire resistant and can even be energy efficient.

Finishes and styles of concrete blocks can vary as well. For example, a concrete block can be glazed to have a smooth and durable finish, can be split to have a stone like texture, or can be slotted to absorb sound, among other options. Concrete blocks can be manufactured in a wide variety of shapes and sizes as well. The most common type of concrete building blocks are 8” x 8” x 16”, but concrete blocks can be made larger or smaller and can come in different styles, such as concrete block bricks which are often used for patios.

So, what can you do with concrete blocks? Traditional concrete masonry block can be used to build virtually any type of structure. These blocks are often used to construct concrete block walls, whether those walls are being used on the side of a large building, for a garage, or even to create concrete block homes. One very popular use for the blocks is to create a concrete block wall, as a retaining wall or as an external feature in a backyard (for example, in an outdoor kitchen or as a privacy wall alongside a patio). Concrete retaining wall blocks are stacked on top of one another in a staggered fashion with mortar joints and create a secure and solid structure.

Another use for concrete blocks is for laying a patio. Concrete patio blocks come in a selection of styles and decorative options and are an economical option for designing a patio in comparison to natural stone or other alternatives. Decorative concrete blocks can be manufactured to look like bricks or other stone types and can be used to create a beautiful and functional outdoor patio. The decorative concrete block can be laid in various patterns to create an interesting design and block paving is a popular option for patios.

Interlocking concrete blocks are a great option for building retaining walls or other solid and secure structures, or they can be used in place of interlocking pavers at a more economical cost for creating driveways, walkways and patios. Another good use for concrete blocks is to create outdoor fireplaces at a lower cost than stone fireplaces would cost.

There are many concrete block types available to meet the needs of almost any type of outdoor construction project, so no matter what you are looking to build outdoors, you can probably find a type of concrete block available to meet your needs. Some concrete blocks are not overly attractive, but there are others that are very decorative or have various finishes that will not only offer a strong and durable structure, but an attractive one as well.

Laying concrete blocks can be done by homeowners looking to save money on construction costs for outdoor projects. DIY concrete block construction is not overly difficult although there are some basic steps to follow and important points to consider when building with concrete blocks. There are a number of informative articles and videos online that can provide information on laying concrete blocks, and if you have some time and don’t mind a good deal of manual labor, then you can save yourself a lot on labor costs when building a concrete block retaining wall, laying a concrete block patio, or completing another type of building project that involves concrete blocks.

You can find concrete blocks for sale from masonry suppliers, at garden or home improvement centers, or from landscape supply companies. A concrete block supplier will typically have the largest selection of concrete block types for sale and can usually recommend the type of block that will best meet the needs of your project. Concrete block prices will vary depending on the type of block you choose, the size of the block, the amount you need to order, the distance they will need to be delivered (they can be rather heavy and delivery costs can add up quickly), and other factors, but concrete block cost is usually lower than using another type of product for the same job, such as pavers, stone, or bricks.

There are many uses for concrete blocks and many types of concrete blocks to choose from, depending on what you are looking to accomplish and what type of finished look you are hoping to achieve. When it comes to outdoor projects for your backyard, patio, garden or driveway, you may want to consider concrete block construction for its versatility, durability and affordability.

Block paving is a popular and attractive way to complete patios, walkways and even driveways. One of the reasons that paving blocks are used so often by homeowners to enhance their outdoor décor is due to the versatility that block paving bricks and stones offer. Block paving comes in a wide variety of designs, materials, styles, and price ranges and is more versatile to use than patio slabs. An added benefit to using block paving is that many homeowners can complete the project on their own without having to hire professional landscapers or home improvement contractors. DIY block paving allows the block paving cost to remain lower than it would otherwise be if completed by a professional and offers more opportunities for homeowners to enjoy what might otherwise be an expensive option for their backyard, patio, driveway or other exterior area.

Types of Block Paving Materials:

Before detailing the steps of how to lay block paving, let’s first look at the different block paving designs and materials available. Block paving generally is separated into two basic types: concrete block pavers and brick pavers. Concrete paving blocks are constructed from molded concrete which can have color, textures and design patterns added to enhance the surface look. Brick pavers are made from kiln-fired clay and look like regular bricks. Both block and brick pavers are available in a variety of thicknesses, color choices and patterns. The type you choose will depend in part on the look you are trying to achieve and the location where you are laying block paving.

Block pavers are available in a wide selection of shapes and sizes. Consumers can choose from rectangular block pavers, square block pavers, round block pavers, or paving block in a variety of other shapes, such as hexagons, triangles, semi circles and more. The most common shape of block pavers is rectangular, although using other shapes or a combination of shapes will add to the design element of the finished project.

Block paving stones also come in a variety of color options. The colors of concrete paving blocks come from the addition of concrete dye. The dyes and color processes of different block paving companies and manufacturers may differ and part of the difference in varying quality of pavers depends on the color process used. High quality pavers will maintain uniform color throughout the paver, while cheap block pavers may only have the color added near the surface of the paver. This can be a problem when pavers are cut or as they wear over time. Most pavers will experience some fading of the dye over the years, however, so if you need to match pavers at a later time to new ones, the colors may not match. Brick pavers are naturally colored based on the clay used to create the pavers.

Block Paving Installation:

Block paving project planning – Before you begin your DIY block paving project, it is best to measure and plan out your area, select the block paving pattern you will use, determine the amount of block paving materials you need, and make sure you have all of the appropriate tools to complete the project, as well as any additional landscaping supplies you may need. Determining how much you need in block paving supplies is based on measuring the area of the location to be covered (length times width) to determine the square footage. It is best to allow for at least 5 – 10% waste to ensure that you have enough materials. If you are dealing with intricate block paving patterns, uneven edges or a lot of cutting of block paving bricks, you should allow for additional waste. Block paving suppliers should be able to help you determine the amount of paving supplies needed based on measurements you provide.

Photo courtesty of Elvis Santana

Block paving pattern choices- When it comes to block paving designs, there are a number of patterns to choose from. You can lay the pavers in a straight rectangular pattern similar to the way subway tiles are laid, which is referred to as a stretcher bond pattern. Herringbone patterns are very popular methods of laying block pavers and in these designs interlocking paving blocks are laid in alternating horizontal and vertical arrays to create a puzzle-like pattern. A basket weave pattern is another popular option and is achieved by alternating two rows of rectangular pavers horizontally and then vertically in a continuous pattern for each row and then reversing the pattern for the next row. These are just a sample of the block paving pattern choices available.

Block paving installation methods – There are two basic types of block paving installation methods. One is called flexible paving installation and the other is referred to as rigid paving installation. Flexible paving involves setting up and leveling a bed of sand upon which the block paving stones are laid and then filling the joints between each paver with a fine sand. Rigid paving installation involves creates a mortar bed to hold the block pavers and filling the joints with mortar. This method is similar to building a brick wall, although it is done horizontally instead of vertically. Most DIY block paving installation projects involve the flexible paving method.

Laying block paving – The most important step in laying block paving stones is preparing the ground properly and beginning with a level surface. You need to begin by removing any loose soil, rocks, etc. and then compacting the existing surface. A layer of crushed stone should be added and compacted using a plate vibrator to provide a solid base surface. You may want to consider laying a weed block layer, but this is not always necessary.

For flexible block paving installations, you must then lay a bed of sand and compact it using a plate vibrator. Use a level board that spans the length of your surface to determine whether the area is level and fill and compact any areas that require additional sand. You can use the boards to level the sand by dragging them across the surface. Leveling can also be done by using a string that spans the surface area.

Photo courtesty of Elvis Santana

Once the sand is level, you can begin laying your block paving stones or bricks. Lay out a few pavers to figure out the best way to begin your pattern. Begin laying full paving stones in the desired pattern and leave space for the blocks at the edges that must be cut to finish the area or to create a specific pattern. Cut block paving stones and brick using a saw and blade appropriate for the material and thickness of the paver (check with the supplier to find out what type of cutting tool is best). After all of the block paving stones are laid, you should then compact the entire area again using the plate vibrator to ensure that they are level and compacted into the sand bed.

Once the pavers are laid and compacted, joint sand can be added to fill in the joints. After adding the sand, the pavers should be compacted again to fill the sand into the joints. Additional sand should then be added. Any excess sand that does not fall into the joints can be swept away.

If you are using a rigid block paving installation method, you must lay a level of concrete mortar after the ground is initially compacted and leveled. Lay the brick pavers in the mortar and allow the mortar to set. Fill in joints with additional mortar once paving stones are set using a trowel. Most often, rigid block paving is handled by professional installers.

These installation instructions are intended only as a guide in order to give do-it-yourselfers an idea of the basic steps of the installation process. They are not complete instructions and additional information should be acquired before beginning the project. You can find detailed step by step block paving installation instructions either from block paving suppliers or by doing a bit of research online.

Photo courtesty of Elvis Santana

Block paving sealing – Once installation is completed, a block paving seal should be applied to protect the surface of the pavers. Adding a block paving sealer is an important step in maintaining the look and functionality of the pavers for the long term, since the seal will repel water, stains and dirt. It will also help to preserve the color of the block paving stones. Sealing block paving bricks and stones is an important step in the installation process.

Block paving maintenance – Following installation and sealing, block pavers require some basic ongoing maintenance to keep them looking their best. You should sweep any dirt or debris off of the pavers occasionally to prevent a build-up of dirt or to prevent moisture from being trapped and thus mold or algae from building up. For flexible paving installations, you should also spray a weed killer once or twice each year between the joints to prevent weeds and stray grass from growing between the pavers. If you notice a build-up of mold, mildew or algae on the pavers, you should remove it so that it does not become slippery. A block paving sealant should also be reapplied periodically to keep the pavers protected (check the label on the block paving sealant to see how often it should be applied). The use of a pressure washer to clean block paving should only be used sporadically and only if absolutely necessary, since the pressure from a power washer can dislodge some of the paving blocks and can remove the sand between joints in flexible paving installations. You may also need to periodically add more sand to the joints to keep them from moving and to keep your patio, walkway or driveway from looking it’s best, whether the area is powerwashed or not.

Block paving provides a rich and unique look to patios, walkways and driveways. While block paving prices may be higher than other material choices, they can be installed by homeowners, which brings block paving costs more in-line with other material options if a professional installer is not used. Even for those homeowners that cannot or do not want to take on a DIY block paving project, the additional cost of block paving as compared to other paving options is often worth the enhanced aesthetic look the block pavers provide to the finished space. Block pavers offer beauty and versatility that are unsurpassed and can be placed in intricate patterns for increased interest and design.

Block paving specialists can show you a variety of designs, products and styles so you can select a paver and design that fits your budget without sacrificing style. If you decide to hire professional block paving contractors to complete the job, it is best to get a number of estimates before determining which contractor to use, since block paving prices can vary rather widely among contractors. Be sure to find out the extent of work that needs to be done, as well as the type of products that will be used. Checking references is also a good idea before deciding which block paving company you will choose.

Outdoor landscaping projects are very often done by do-it-yourselfers. Putting in a flower bed, a vegetable garden or a few small trees is a task that most homeowners will choose to do themselves, rather than hiring a professional. Other projects, such as laying mulch, landscaping around a newly installed garden pond, pool or patio, or incorporating a decorative rock garden into a garden décor scheme are all easily accomplished with a little know-how and a bit of sweat equity.

One of the hardest aspects of attempting a do-it-yourself landscape project is determining the correct amount of landscape supplies needed for the job. Landscape supplies, such as top soil, mulch, crushed stone, sand or small pebbles are usually ordered in bulk and are difficult to transport if you run short and have to make a second trip. In many cases, if your project is large enough, landscaping supply companies will deliver the garden landscape supplies directly to your home, since they are too difficult to transport in a car or minivan. That is why it is so important to make sure that you correctly determine the amount of landscape supplies that are needed the first time around.

Many garden landscape supplies are sold by the cubic yard. In order to determine how many cubic yards of any type of landscape material you need, you must first determine the square footage of the area you are looking to cover. This is done by measuring the width and length of the area, if it is a square or rectangle or by determining the diameter of the space if is a circle. Once you have determined the square footage of the area you need to cover, you then need to determine the depth of landscaping supplies that you need to lay and factor that depth into the equation along with the square footage. Square footage is typically measured in feet and depth is measures in inches. One easy way to figure this out is to use a materials calculator that can be found online. This will do all of the calculations for you if you just put in the measurements. Another option is to provide the landscaping suppliers with the dimensions and they will be able to calculate how much you need to order.

Taking the time to accurately determine how much you need when it comes to garden landscape supplies will save you a lot of time, as well as money. Similar to the idea in construction that you should always measure twice and cut once, in order to avoid costly mistakes, making sure that you only need to make one trip to the home improvement or garden store to pick up supplies will allow you to spend your time most efficiently. When you are ordering wholesale landscape supplies, this is especially important since having to arrange for an extra delivery or pick up of additional supplies can be rather costly.

Figuring out your landscaping supply needs is an important step in any do-it-yourself landscape or garden project. If you cannot figure it out yourself, be sure to use a materials calculator online or ask the landscape supply company where you are getting your materials from for help in determining the proper quantity to order.

There is nothing like the great outdoors, especially when it’s in your own backyard! Being able to enjoy your backyard or garden is one of the great pleasures of being a homeowner. And with the vast assortment of landscape supplies available to today’s homeowners, there is no limit to what you can do to create your own backyard oasis.

When personalizing your backyard, there are many considerations to keep in mind. Do you want a deck or patio? How about a pool? Do you want to leave space for a vegetable or flower garden? Would you like to add interesting and unique features such as a fountain, arch, gazebo or garden building? The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your design ideas, outdoor space and budget. No matter what type of design you choose for your backyard or garden, there is sure to be an assortment of landscape supplies to help you turn your garden decor designs into reality.

Selecting landscape supplies is sometimes done in accordance with a landscape design specialist, or for the do-it-yourselfer, you can view a variety of different landscaping supplies by going to your nearest landscape supply company. Most landscape supplies cannot be ordered online because they are heavy and are ordered in bulk (such as stone, decking, mulch, soil, etc), but there are some items that can be purchased through online landscape supply retailers or even wholesale landscape supply companies. Even if you cannot purchase your supplies online, there are many sites available to give you an idea of what different landscaping supplies look like when incorporated into a finished design, to help make your choices easier.

Depending on what your outdoor project consists of, you will have a wide variety of options to choose from. There are too many types of landscape supplies to even begin to list, but here is a sampling just to give you an idea of how vast your options can be.

For example, if you want to have an outdoor area to sit, dine and entertain, you may be considering building a patio or deck. Once you decide, you will then have to decide what type of landscaping supplies you would like to use. If a deck is your choice, you can choose from a variety of decking materials, including different types of wood (cedar, treated woods, etc) as well as newer recycled products that require virtually no maintenance. But you may also need supplies such as crushed rock or stone, dirt and more to build the foundation of the deck. Patio choices offer an even greater variety of landscape supplies to choose from, such as pavers, brick, natural stone, stamped concrete, patio paving slabs and more, and may also require more ‘behind the scenes’ supplies, such as crushed stone, sand and soil to prepare the area before the final surface is constructed.

There are also a myriad of possibilities for other garden landscape supplies that can accommodate almost any type of design and can add interest to your outdoor space. In addition to bulk products, such as topsoil, mulch, crushed stone and pebbles, gravel, sand, and other landscape hardgoods, there are also a variety of more decorative items that can enhance your backyard or garden. Consider items such as garden edging, bridges, gazebos, arbors, fountains, ponds, garden statues, lighting and more to spruce up your outdoor living space.

The type of supplies you choose and the landscape suppliers you select will be determined in large part by the type of outdoor project you are undertaking. For smaller projects you may be able to purchase your supplies from online landscape suppliers, but for larger projects it is best to find wholesale landscape supplies from a local company at a reduced rate. If you are working with a landscape designer, they very often have a prior relationship with wholesalers to get you the best prices possible on landscaping supplies. But, even if you are tackling a garden or landscape project on your own, you should be able to find landscape supplies that fit your needs at a price that you are comfortable with. Finding suppliers that will deliver the materials to your home is also an important consideration, especially with bulk supplies or larger items.
