There’s nothing like having a sunroom. Surrounded by glass and bright sun, you can sit in your sunroom and view your property and landscape while avoiding the outside elements. Stay warm during a snowstorm, and remain cool during a heat wave. Watch the leaves change color in the fall, and watch flowers bloom in the spring. To make your sunroom inviting all year round, there are some essential comfort elements you should add. By doing so, you can make the most out of what will surely be your favorite room in your home.

Sunroom Furniture

Inviting sunroom furniture calls you to sit down and relax all year long. Arrange a loveseat, sofa, and upholstered sitting chairs in a semicircle to promote conversation. Add a coffee table for drinks and a card game. Read a magazine or paint a picture of the great view while sitting at a desk overlooking the outdoor landscape. Assemble benches or tables to display fresh flowers from the garden or photos of loved ones.

Sunroom Rugs

Area rugs pad the floor and brighten the room. Spread a large rug in the center of the room or lay runners to accent it. Place an indoor outdoor rug at the entrance of the sunroom to prevent outside dirt from tracking through the house.

Sunroom Entertainment

Install Direct TV for yearlong entertainment. Watch the big game with your buddies or play on a gaming console with your family. Install a mini refrigerator and microwave to ensure you do not miss any of the action while preparing snacks for the gang.

Sunroom Decor

Utilize decorations to create a comfortable atmosphere in which you want to sit all year. Decorate the sunroom with children’s artwork, vacation memorabilia, or other knick-knacks that bring you pleasure. Colored pillows and wall hangings add splashes of color. Choose bold colors for excitement or pastel colors for relaxation.

Sunroom Security and Privacy

Maintain security and privacy in your sunroom. Hang curtains or blinds for privacy. As an added bonus, if you install sunblinds, you’ll make the room feel more comfortable and will avoid fading from the sun. Lock the door and windows for security. Install a dusk to dawn light to prevent burglars.

A bright, decorated sunroom invites you and your guests to admire the great view and relax. In any weather, you feel comfortable and protected. Include entertainment and elements of style, comfort, and privacy in your sunroom for year round enjoyment.

If you live near the ocean or love to frequent the beach, you will find that it can be a very resourceful place when seeking items for garden décor or practical garden use.

On the one hand, the ocean contains an abundance of organic materials and minerals which occur naturally. On the other hand, it is swamped with all kinds of debris from humans in the form of wreckage or trash.

Artistically, both make for interesting finds and can be handy alternatives to store-bought yard art or landscaping supplies. The question, however, is how to utilize the choices before you when there’s so much to consider. A few ideas for using ocean debris in the garden include the following:

Seaweed: Layered on the ground around plants or made into fertilizer spray, it provides tremendous amounts of nutrients that strengthen root systems and ward off diseases. Everyone from novice gardeners to professional landscapers use seaweed whenever it’s available.

Stones: Beaches have endless supplies of stones, so if a rock garden is your goal, there’s no better place to go collecting. True, stones from the beach may not fit as nicely together as cut bricks or hewn masonry, but they will provide fresh character to the yard.

Sand: Certain plants require a mixture of sand and soil for healthy growth, and the beach is a great place to scoop up the former – for free.

Wood: Very often, timber gets washed up on the beach. While it’s unclear where it may have originated (a ship wreck? a damaged pier?), the wood can be used for garden bed walls or to section off certain plants. Sometimes an unusually large chunk gets pushed ashore and can be used as a garden bench, border marker, or base for potted plants. Some pieces of driftwood from the ocean even make great decorative objects all by themselves.

Buoys: Buoys often get detached from various locations and wash up on the coast. In some beachfront communities, they are attached to fences as decorations or used as markers in gardens.

Rope or netting: Found on buoys or just lying around, rope or netting that winds up on the shore may have been ripped from traps or fishing boats. Either way, it can be used to tie up shrubbery, tree branches, or to simply help bursting vegetable plants like tomatoes stand upright.

Shells: These can be strung together and hung up around the yard like chimes clinging in the wind. The larger kinds can also be used as markers when planting seeds and, depending on their depth, as seed starters.

Star fish: Of all the ocean life that washes up on shore after a storm, star fish seem to have the most ornamental use when dry. If they can’t be returned to their life in the ocean, they make intriguing and imaginative decorations in the yard, especially when painted and put in a rock garden with low lying flowers.

Glass: Ocean glass is special in that it gets smoothed out by the power of the sea. When enough ocean glass is collected, one project can be to line the exterior of garden pots in mosaic fashion for a beachy and interesting look.

There’s nothing like the look of a set of French doors, whether they are used as a passageway in and out of your home or are used in places such as a sunroom or conservatory, providing a glimpse to the outdoors from the comfort of inside. No matter where you install French doors, you will find yourself faced with many options – what material the doors are made from (wood, metal, composite, etc), whether the doors are solid or include individual panes of glass or solid glass inserts, and what type of French door hardware will be installed to accent the doors.

French door hardware does more than simply enhance the look of a set of French doors. Hardware provides the functionality needed to make the doors safe, secure and fully operational. Some French doors come with the hardware already installed on the door. Others, however, require the separate installation of French door hardware to complete the total door install. Remember that if you are buying French door hardware on your own (and not as part of the door kit), you need two sets of hardware – one for each door panel in the set. And be sure that the hardware you purchase is made specifically for use with French doors and not single panel doors.

Types of French Door Hardware

Door Levers – This category of French door hardware includes options such as keyed entry levers, passage levers, dummy levers, thumbturn levers and more. If you are installing French door hardware on an exterior door, you will more than likely require a keyed entry lever, unless you combine one of the other types of levers with a separate keyed entry lock.

Door Knobs –Similar in functionality to door levers, you can opt for French door hardware that uses knobs instead of levers to open the door. Options include keyed entry knobs, passage knobs, dummy knobs, egg & dart knobs, and more.

Security Bolts – One important type of French door hardware to consider for exterior French doors are security bolts. These bolts secure the doors into the frame so that they cannot easily be pushed open in the center. They also keep one door stationary if you wish to just open one side of a French door at any given time. Choose from among surface bolts, flush bolts, deadbolts and more.

Locks – French door hardware locks can be installed separately from the knobs and levers or the lock can be incorporated into the knob or lever itself. If you are installing a separate French door lock, you should use multipoint trim to serve as a backplate to both the lock and coordinating lever or handle.

Keypads – Not quite the norm for French door hardware, but you can opt to put an electronic keypad or keypad deadbolt lock on a French door for added exterior home security.

Trims – In addition to the type of French door hardware you buy, you also need coordinating trim and backplates. Some types of French door hardware come with the trim included, such as lever sets and handles sets, but if you prefer something a bit more ornate or need to replace any aspect of your French door hardware, you can also buy trim pieces separately. You can buy dummy trims and trims to accommodate levers, knobs, thumbturn handles and security bolts in a wide variety of sizes, shapes and finishes. Multipoint trims allow for more than one set of French door hardware to be installed, such as a deadbolt and passage lever or thumbturn. Kickplates protect the bottom of the door from being scuffed up by feet hitting the door.

Hinges – You may not think of hinges when you think of hardware, but the type and finish of hinge that you use on your door can have an impact on its overall look. You can buy decorative finished French door hinges to enhance the look of your door. If your doors are installed as exterior doors, make sure your hinges can withstand outdoor conditions without rusting or sticking.

Knockers – Not all French doors have knockers, but if you are interested in installing a knocker on your French door, be sure you select a style that will fit within the wood, metal or composite frame and will not hit any portion of the glass. Some knockers are made to coordinate with matching leversets or handlesets for an overall uniform look.

French Door Hardware Finishes

There are loads of French door hardware finish options to choose from. The finish you choose will set the style for the door – from traditional or country to contemporary or eclectic. Consider options such as:

Antique brass

Polished brass

Venetian bronze

Antique bronze

Oil rubbed bronze

Polished chrome

Satin nickel

Pewter

Stainless steel

Copper

Wrought iron

Lead crystal (use indoors only)

If you are buying exterior French door hardware, be sure that you select a finish option that can withstand outdoor weather conditions, including sun and moisture, and that the hardware is properly sealed. Indoor French door hardware options are greater because you do not have to contend with selecting a finish due to how it handles weather elements.

Black plastic sheeting may look like a giant trash bag that comes in a roll, but it is much stronger and more durable and has many uses around the outside of the home. You can use black plastic sheeting rolls in many ways – from preventing weeds from growing in your flower beds to protecting your outdoor furniture when it is not in use or deterring the infiltration of moisture on an open or damaged area of the house, garage or carport.

One of the best uses for black plastic sheeting is as a weed barrier in your landscaping. 6 mil black plastic sheeting is the best product for this use, as it is relatively thick and will block weeds from coming through the plastic. Black plastic sheeting for gardens and landscaping is typically sold in a large roll. A roll of black plastic sheeting is usually 100 feet long and comes in a variety of widths, such as 8’, 10’ and 12’. The rolls themselves do not look that wide, but when you pull off the length of sheeting that you need, you can then unfold it and it will be as wide as the package states. A 100 ft roll of black plastic sheeting will go a long way and provide a lot of coverage.

To use the sheeting in your garden, simply lay out the plastic anywhere that you are looking for weed coverage. Cut the plastic where you need to plant and poke holes to allow water to penetrate. Make sure that the edges of the sheeting are secure on all sides or better yet, cover the black plastic sheeting with mulch. The sheeting works especially well in areas of the landscaping that are covered with rocks or small pebbles, to prevent weeds from coming through. You can also place black plastic sheeting down before laying bricks, pavers or other materials for walkways or patios.

In addition to using black plastic sheeting for landscaping and weed control, homeowners can also use rolls of black plastic sheeting, cut to size, to act as a moisture barrier for anything that needs protection from the outdoor elements. This can include anything from wrapping a mobile home with black plastic sheeting prior to transport, to using black plastic sheeting as a way to block moisture from entering the open end of a carport. The sheeting can be used to cover outdoor furniture or accessories for protection when not in use or shielding a bicycle that would be otherwise subjected to the elements outdoors. It also has a great many uses indoors as well.

When buying black plastic sheeting, you have options as to the thickness of the plastic, with the thickness being expressed in mils. 6 mil sheeting is rather thick and is very strong and durable, but depending on what you are using it for, you may also prefer 4 mil black sheeting, which will handle most jobs well enough. 2 mil black plastic sheeting can be somewhat thin, so it is best used for only light jobs that do not require the sheeting to stay in place permanently. This can include uses such as having the sheeting function as a covering when painting or staining (they work great as tarps!), using it to protect dust from flying during a construction project, or even wrapping a shed during Halloween to keep with the holiday spirit.

Most black plastic sheeting is made from polythelene. For this reason, you may see it called black poly sheeting or poly black plastic sheeting. No matter what it’s called, it’s all basically the same thing. The sheeting is strong, soft and pliable, is easy to cut to size, and is a great way to provide protection from moisture, dust, paint or construction debris. It can be easily wrapped around any size and shaped object and has a wide variety of uses, both temporary and permanent, outside and inside the home.

You can buy black plastic sheeting at Home Depot and other home improvement stores. You can also find the sheeting at lawn and garden stores and even at some superstores, and you can buy black plastic sheeting online at places like Amazon and other retailers. Prices for black plastic sheeting are relatively cheap, running in the neighborhood of $20 – $30 per 100 foot roll for some of the thinner sheeting. Thicker and wider rolls of black plastic sheeting will be more expensive, however.

If your patio screen door has seen better days, it may be time to repair or replace it. Whether the problem with your patio screen door is due to a loose or ripped screen, a faulty roller or two, or a stiff or warped track, patio screen door replacement can be an inexpensive way to improve the look and functionality of your door. Repairing or replacing patio screen doors is a do-it-yourself project that most homeowners can tackle themselves in just a few hours. All you need is a little know-how and you’re ready to start replacing your patio screen door.

Replacing Patio Door Screens

When your screen door works properly but just the screen is in need of repair, you can simply replace the patio door screen without having to replace the whole door. In order to do so, you need to first buy some window and door screening, the proper width of spline (it should be the exact width of the old spline) and a splining installation tool. You will need enough patio door screening to cover the entire door plus an additional 2” or so around each side.

To replace the screen, remove the existing spline and gently pull out the old screen. Then lay the new patio door screen out, make sure it is in position, lay the new spline along the groove at the edges of the patio screen door frame, and then use the splining tool to secure the new screen in the edges of the frame. The splining tool works by gently pushing the spline into the grooves of the frame, securing the screening in the process. Just take your time with the splining tool and gently roll it along the edges as you keep the screening pulled taut. This will better ensure that your new patio door screen will be installed securely and tightly, with no gaps or bulges along the edges.

Replacing Patio Screen Door Rollers

If your rollers are sticky or are not moving properly, and no amount of cleaning and tweaking them will help, then you may need to replace your sliding patio screen door rollers. This is pretty simple to do. Once the screen door has been popped out of the track (gently lift the patio screen door up and tilt the top forward to disengage the rollers from the track), you can remove the existing rollers and replace them with new ones. Patio screen door rollers are typically sold in a pack so that you can replace all the rollers at the same time. Just make sure that you purchase replacement patio screen door rollers that are appropriate for the size and model of door that you own. The old rollers can be removed and the new ones put in place with just a few turns of a screwdriver.

Replacing Patio Screen Door Hardware

If the handle of your screen door is broken or you are looking to add a more decorative handle, you can replace the patio screen door hardware with just a few screws. Patio screen door handles, locks and toe stops can be purchased individually and are easy to install. If you have a dog or cat, you can also buy patio screen pet doors that can be installed to provide easy in-and-out access to your pets.

Complete Patio Screen Door Replacement

Some models of patio screen doors will offer complete patio screen door replacement options. This is the best option when your patio screen door is really not in good shape, the frame is bent or warped, or you just can’t be bothered with the hassle of replacing a few independent parts. When buying replacement patio screen doors, make sure that the model you buy will work with the type of existing patio door you own. Otherwise, the new patio replacement screen door will not operate properly in the existing track of your door.

The first thing you need to determine is whether you need a sliding patio screen door replacement or a French patio screen door replacement. Then you need to carefully check the measurements of your existing patio screen door to make sure any replacement you purchase will fit in the track. You also want to determine what type of frame you want – aluminum, wood, metal or another material, and whether you need a retractable patio screen door. Companies like Andersen, Pella, Marvin, Jeld-Wen, Therma-Tru and Columbia Manufacturing sell patio screen door replacement kits to fit a number of different models of patio doors.

Buying Patio Screen Door Replacement Kits and Parts

Depending on what you are replacing, whether it is just the screening, the rollers, a piece of hardware, or the entire patio screen door, you can purchase the replacement doors, kits and parts you need from a selection of vendors. The first place you can look to buy patio door screen parts is from the store that you originally purchased your patio door or from the company that makes your door. This will best ensure that the parts you use will work properly with the type of door you own.

You can also check with window and door stores, home improvement stores and hardware stores to see if you can find the patio screen door replacement parts you need. If you are looking for specific patio screen door parts or complete replacement doors, you should consider buying patio screen door replacement kits and parts online. By doing so, you can do a search for the exact make and model of your screen door, making the job of finding the right parts a lot easier than going from store to store in search of just what you need.

There are numerous uses for indoor outdoor carpet. As the name implies, this type of carpeting can be used indoors or outdoors. Primarily, however, indoor outdoor carpet is used in an exterior setting due to the fact that it is made to withstand conditions that are not often found indoors (like contact with moisture and constant sun exposure). For indoor use, there are many more options of indoor carpeting that will provide a more attractive look at lower prices, although there are certainly instances where indoor outdoor carpeting works well indoors. Indoor outdoor carpeting is a great option for any area that is either completely exposed to the outdoor elements, is in a transitional location between exterior and interior spaces, or is in a location prone to moisture.

Where To Use Indoor Outdoor Carpet?

As mentioned, there are many places that indoor outdoor carpet can be used. Here are some of the more common uses:

Patios

Porches

Sunrooms

Decks

Boats

Pool surrounds

Garages

Interior surfaces that may be damp, such as basements or laundry rooms

What Is Indoor Outdoor Carpet?

Indoor outdoor carpet is made of synthetic fibers and backing materials that are specially formulated so that they are resistant to moisture. This allows them to function well outdoors, since there is almost always some type of moisture that the flooring will encounter. Most indoor outdoor carpeting will also be treated to resist fading from exposure to the sun or will be made from UV-resistant fibers. Quality indoor outdoor carpets should also be stain resistant and should be easy to clean. For constant exposure to moisture, marine backing should be chosen.

What Types of Indoor Outdoor Carpet Are Available?

There are many types of indoor outdoor carpet for sale these days. Long thought of as a plastic-looking, green grassy surface that looked cheap and felt uncomfortable, indoor outdoor carpeting has since come a long way. While you can still find indoor outdoor carpeting that looks like green grass, there are many other options as well. These include:

Berber indoor outdoor carpet

Loop indoor outdoor carpet

Plush indoor outdoor carpet

Marine carpet

Indoor outdoor rugs

Indoor outdoor carpet comes in a wide variety of colors, thicknesses, styles and quality. For those looking to cover just a small surface, the carpet can also be bound on the edges so it functions more like an area rug, or you can find indoor outdoor rugs that can be used just about anywhere.

How Is Indoor Outdoor Carpet Installed?

Indoor outdoor carpet installation is relatively easy, at least in comparison to typical indoor carpet installation. You can choose to install indoor outdoor carpet using an adhesive material or double-sided tape (made for carpet installation). Either way, the carpet should be installed on a smooth, finished surface that is clean and level. The carpet should be rolled out in the area where it is to be installed and should be allowed to sit for a short time (an hour or so is fine) to allow it to acclimate to the environment. Then the carpet can be cut to size, the adhesive or double-sided tape laid on the underlying surface, and the carpet carefully laid on top. A heavy carpet roller should be used to permanently secure the indoor outdoor carpet to the adhesive and to smooth out any bumps or ridges. If permanent installation is not desired, this step may not be necessary.

Indoor outdoor carpeting does not have to be permanently secured and can just be laid down in any area desired. It is a good idea, however, to make sure that the carpet will not slip or move, so double sided adhesive tape or a non-slip indoor outdoor carpet pad should be placed underneath to keep the carpet securely in place. Also be sure that the edges are firmly in place so they do not roll up. This can result in a tripping hazard and will also make it more likely that the carpet fibers will begin to unravel.

Are you looking to add value to your home quickly and easily? You may have a lot of reasons for doing this, like getting a higher return when you go to sell your home or so you can increase your home’s equity in order to get a lower interest rate when you go to refinance, or maybe you are simply looking to make a few home improvements to increase the value and aesthetic appeal of your home so you can enjoy it while you are living there. Whatever the reason may be that you want to add value to your home, in this article we’ll cover three simple tips that are easy to do and that you can use to increase your home’s value quickly, without having to invest a lot of cash into it.

Get A New Coat Of Paint

To make a house look newer, or at least look more updated and maintained, a coat of paint may be all you really need. A new coat of paint can really make things shine, especially on the exterior of your home where the existing paint is subjected to the weather on a daily basis. If you have a deck, or exterior shutters that haven’t been painted in awhile, this is the perfect opportunity to spruce those up as well.

One area you may have not considered painting before, but that can really make a difference in how your home is viewed and what its perceived value is, is your garage floor. Painting your garage floor can also increase your home’s equity. For example, by using some Drylok floor paint for concrete, or another type of concrete paint, you can not only initially make your garage floor look cleaner and brighter, but you can also protect the floor from chipping and cracking, and can keep your garage floor looking newer, longer.

Improve The Lighting

One relatively inexpensive and very easy way to add a lot of curb appeal to a home is to install outdoor lighting fixtures around the outside of your house. This helps by showing off your house to prospective buyers and creates ambiance and beauty. There are many types of outside lights available, from post lights and lanterns to driveway lighting and walkway lighting, that can add interest, drama, and mood to your exterior decor.

Outside lighting also increases the value of your home by making it safer and more secure, since it makes all of the areas around the perimeter of your home easily visible and makes your home less likely to be the culprit of criminal activity. If you live in an area where you have a neighborhood watch program, this can benefit your home and your family since it is easier for others that live close by to keep an eye on your property.

Fix Up The Shrub Beds

Another easy thing you can do to add some quick value to your home is to fix up the shrub beds around your house. You may want to consider laying some new mulch down and you should pull the weeds to make your home look well-cared for and well manicured. If modifying some of the landscaping, you should trim overgrown shrubs and trees that cover your home because these will tend to make your home look less inviting. You may instead prefer to replace some shrubs with smaller ones that look neater, and should also add some color to brighten up the look of the front of your home in order to make your home look more appealing.

In addition to the three ways we have discussed, there are numerous other ways to make your home look more appealing and to add value to your home quickly and relatively inexpensively – in fact some things you can do can even make your older home look more like a new home! If you are trying to add value for your own personal enjoyment, then you can pick and choose which projects are most important to you in order to make your home look better and be a more attractive place to live. If, however, you are solely interested in increasing the home’s value so you can sell it or refinance your mortgage, you may want to ask a real estate agent for their advice on where you should best spend your money to get the most increase in value. It may be a good idea to get an appraisal to see what your home would go for before you make any improvements and then to get one after, to see how much value you’ve actually added to your home based on your improvements.

If you are tired of ugly downspouts and would like a more attractive alternative, have you thought about using rain chain downspouts instead? They are easy to install and look much more attractive than plastic spouting. Rain chains have been used in Japan for many years where very large, decorative examples can be seen in temples, and smaller, simpler versions of rain chains can be found in homes.

Rain chains come in a wide variety of styles, from simple, linked chains to decorative copper rain chains made in shapes such as umbrellas, watering cans and tulips. Water is directed gently down the chain where it collects in a decorative container or is channeled away from the building. Water flows more gently down a rain chain than a downspout and does not splash onto surrounding walls or the ground below. Many people also like the soothing, tinkling sounds of the water flowing down the chain, and rain chains even clink like wind chimes when a breeze flows by them, offering a soothing sound.

Most of the rain chains for sale that you will see are made from copper, which is more attractive than iron or stainless steel. Copper is an extremely durable material that holds up well to the weather, and especially to water. To prevent the oxidation of the copper, they can be coated with shellac for protection which will keep the rain chain looking shiny and attractive. However, if you like the look of copper that turns to a soft greenish patina, you can also get uncoated copper rain chains that will naturally turn color over time.

Cup type rain chains are the most popular style, with tulip rain chains being my personal favorite. The tulip shaped cups collect the rain, which then flows down through a hole in its base to the next cup and eventually to the collection point on the ground. The collection vessel could be a lovely copper bowl to compliment the chain or a ceramic jug or barrel. A wooden box filled with shiny pebbles is also an attractive option. If however, you live in an area prone to lots of rain, you should make sure that the rain can be directed away from the side of the home when it reaches the ground, to avoid potential flooding problems.

Rain chain downspouts are becoming more popular in locations outside of Japan and make a very attractive alternative to plastic or metal piping. Their biggest advantage is the interesting look that they provide to your home in comparison to traditional guttering and downspouts. Initially, they will be slightly more expensive to buy, but quality rain chains, especially copper ones, will last for many, many years and give your home a unique and decorative look.

The beauty of asking experts their opinion on a topic is that they have some great tips to give. So, when we wanted to know more about conservatory roofs, we decided to ask some home improvement experts for their opinion as to what makes a good conservatory roof.

All of these enthusiasts were agreed that a conservatory roof is the most important part of the entire structure. Because the roof gets the most of the sun’s rays during the hot months of the year, it has to be able to reflect the heat and the harmful UV rays adequately. If not, the interior of the conservatory can become uncomfortably hot just at the time when the homeowners would most like to use it. So, although a conservatory roof may not be a homeowner’s first priority when choosing design and building options for their conservatory, it should be because it’ll be the key feature that most affects the comfort level of the finished room.

There are a variety of products that can go into making up a conservatory roof, and the advice from the experts was to spend as much as you can on good quality glazing. Polycarbonate was a popular choice among them, especially as there are products such as Heatguard polycarbonate on the market, which offer excellent protection from the sun. Glass was of course a very popular choice for conservatory roofs, and solar control glass rated highly as a conservatory roof option that would offer adequate protection.

For those that already have a conservatory built and are not entirely pleased with the performance of their conservatory roof, there are actions that can be taken. The home improvement enthusiasts suggested ideas such as fitting solar blinds to the interior of the roof and applying reflective roof films to the inside of the glazing to block the sun from penetrating the roof and making the interior of the conservatory too warm. The roof film and solar conservatory blinds can stop a huge amount of the sun’s heat and the UV rays from entering the interior of the conservatory, which not only makes it feel more comfortable, but also protects the furniture and other belongings within the conservatory from fading.

The experts finally gave one more piece of advice to those building a conservatory. They all recommended that roof vents be considered for any conservatory roof, which would allow cool air to be circulated if the temperature of the room were to become uncomfortable.

So, whether you are building a new conservatory or you already own one but are unhappy with the way the initial conservatory roof was built, this article should give you a few expert opinions on ways to keep your conservatory as comfortable and functional as possible.

Chinking is very important when you are building a log cabin or log home. It seals the spaces between the logs to keep exterior air out and interior air in. It also keeps bugs and moisture from getting in your home. Chinking is a material that goes between the logs as you put them together to form the walls, and is intended to fill in the spaces. Once you have the log walls constructed and the roof put on, you can begin the process of chinking.

The first thing to do before chinking is to insulate between the logs. On the inside or outside of the building, you can use foam board insulation. This will give the home an additional R factor than if it was just solid logs, which will add to the comfort and energy efficiency of the home.

Once the insulation is complete, the chinking is applied to the insulation. A synthetic type of chinking is recommended so it will expand and contract with the logs. Another option for chinking is concrete, however this method has been known to crack and needs to be maintained as time goes on and is not recommended. During the 19th century, people also used mud, clay and horsehair to chink.

When you chink your home, it prevents air, bugs and moisture from penetrating into your log home. It also helps to insulate your home if you have a backer rod there. Chinking can also be used as a design characteristic of your home, and you have many options of chinking materials and colors to choose from to either blend in or contrast with the logs in order to achieve a certain look. It doesn’t matter if you are chinking a new log home or one that has already been built. Either way, you will need to decide what type of finish you will use and you need to make sure it will be well-suited for your project.

To be sure you don’t waste your money, you need to make sure the chinking is not applied too thinly or too thickly. If it is too thin, it won’t stick properly to the logs. This will result in tears or rips as the logs dry and move with each season that passes. If it is applied on too thick, it will take too long to cure and won’t set up properly, especially if the weather is cold, resulting in slumping or perhaps a “spongy” feeling. Ultimately, just be careful not to put your chinking material on too thick or too thin, and also watch the temperature when applying the product.

Chinking is a fundamental part of building a log home or log cabin. Choosing the proper material and applying the material correctly is essential in finishing the job effectively. When done correctly, however, the chinking process adds efficiency, comfort, style and value to your log home.

Chinking is a necessity for any and all log cabins. It is a material placed between the logs of your log home that protects your home from insects, moisture and air from getting into the interior of the home. It also works as an additional layer of insulation, providing additional warmth in the colder winter months. Generally, you apply the chinking to your log home after the shell has been assembled and before you do any interior work in your log home, if it is a newly built home, although for older homes, you can apply chinking whenever it is convenient or it needs to be done.

Chinking used to be made from limestone, sand and clay. But today, it is far more common to find chinking made from an acrylic elastic compound that is easy to apply. We now use this type of chinking material not only because these materials are readily available in mass quantities, but also because they stretch and contract with the natural movements of your home. Older chinking materials are not adaptable. Thus, you often see gaps in older log homes.

Before you begin chinking your log home, make sure that any finish you intend on using on your logs is compatible with the chinking compound you have chosen. There are a number of different colors and finishes of chinking materials, so it will be relatively simple to find one to blend in well with the finished look of your log home. Application of the chinking is relatively easy and there are many options to work with.

To apply chinking to your home, you can put some of the compound from the purchased container into a second container and use a metal or plastic spatula to apply it, or you can put some chinking material into a pastry bag with a nozzle and squeeze the bag to apply the material between your logs. You can also purchase a chinking/caulking gun that is used specifically for these purposes. There is no one correct method of applying the chinking, and it really comes down to user preference and affordability. The chinking should be applied ¼ to ½ inch thick.

After the application of chinking, any drips or incorrect placement of the compound is fairly easy to remedy. Simply keep a dish of water and a sponge handy to correct any mistakes and to ensure that you fix any problems before the chinking sets and dries.

So, if you are planning on building a new log cabin, or even if you have an old one that could use some new chinking to keep it better insulated, go on and chink your log cabin with the new type of chinking material. The spaces and cracks in the cabin should be remedied quickly and easily. You will not only wind up with a beautiful home when you do so, but you will also make your home well insulated for a better and more efficient log cabin atmosphere.

In the world of timber frame homes, there are two main varieties: the lighter timber frame home and heavy timber frame homes. Before getting into the differences between the two, let’s first look at where timber framing originated.

Timber framing is an ancient art that originated mainly in Europe. It can be seen on some old homes and also in barn construction. Logs were felled for the building, then they were sawed flat on each side. Thus the square timber emerged. Then these timbers were each fashioned to go in a specific place in the superstructure. Mortise and tenon joinery was applied to the ends of the timbers to hold them together. Other joinery included dove tails and double dovetails.

Today the vast majority of timber frame companies offer a lighter, more universal form of timber framing. Typically thinner glue-lam beams replace the large timbers. On traditional timber framing, timbers can range from 10″x10″ to 12″x12″. Instead of each timber being handcrafted, CNC machines are used to make every beam the same. The CNC timbers are then interchangeable within the structure. Also, metal plating replaces all of the specialty mortise and tenon and dovetails. Though still offering wide open expanses and high cathedral ceilings, these homes lack much of the intricate craftsmanship and extreme detail of their heavy timber frame home predecessors.

From the early 1900’s until the 1970’s, traditional heavy timber framing almost became extinct. Then a group of master artisans got together and learned the true art of timber framing from a few craftsmen who had kept the tradition alive. Now each year, more and more people have seen the extreme difference between the lighter, more modern timber framing and the traditional heavy timber framing, aka handcrafted heavy timber post and beam homes, and have chosen the latter.

No matter whom the builder or timber supplier is, timber framing is more expensive than standard construction. Many homeowners readily accept that. But when they realize the difference between the two different types of timber frame home construction, many choose to upgrade to the heavy timber frame homes. The quality and look of heavy timber frame construction is simply unmatched and is worth the added expense.

Nowadays, exotic flowers are extremely hard to come by, but they are surely a great addition to any flower arrangement if you want to add some unique style. Most exotic flowers come from Hawaii or any of the hundreds of Pacific islands. The most common exotic flowers that florists and customers seek are Orchids, Yellow Hibiscus, and Birds of Paradise. All of these exotic flowers can be found in Hawaii and are only sold in the continental United States in limited quantities due to how far they have to travel to get there. It is a minimum of a 6 hour flight to transport these flowers stateside, but these beautiful exotic flowers are more versatile then you might think and it is worth it when they make the long journey.

Orchids are the most common exotic flower that is requested from Hawaii. There are many different styles and colors of Orchids available to choose from. This exotic flower requires only a minimum of attention and care in comparison to many other exotic flower types. They require less water than most exotic flowers and also continue to grow in dark areas. They will also remain fresh up to 2 weeks without withering, which makes them viable candidates for shipping across the continental US without fear of them deteriorating before they reach their destination.

The Yellow Hibiscus is Hawaii’s state flower and it is a truly beautiful and vibrant flower. This type of hibiscus is rarely seen in the wild and is mostly grown in nurseries. This might be one of the hardiest and most costly exotic flowers to get, but they are worth it if you are looking to get something unique and stunning. Yellow Hibiscus are mainly used in wedding flower arrangements.

The last exotic flower we are going to discuss in this article is the most famous and weirdest exotic flower found in Hawaii. The Bird of Paradise is similar to orchids in that these exotic flowers grow wild in Hawaii and also require minimum to no maintenance. But they certainly have a rather unique look to them that’s all their own. You’ll mainly find them growing from lava rocks, which is a perfect combination of yin and yang – beauty growing on a harsh environment.

There are many types of exotic flowers available and some are easier to get than others. In some cases, you can have them shipped directly from their original destination to just about anywhere in the world. If you enjoyed this article about some of the more common types of exotic flowers that people seek and would like to learn how to send exotic flowers abroad, visit the site SendFlowersAbroad.org.

Chinking refers to the process of filling in the gaps that exist between logs in a log home, as a protective measure to prevent wind, rain and other elements from accessing the interior of the cabin. If you own a log home or log cabin, then this is a process that you will want to do or have done to keep your home better protected from the external elements and to keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Chinking log cabins requires patience and some degree of skill to get an even application of between 1/4 and 1/2 inch thick of chinking material, using a caulking gun and foam brushes.

There are several guidelines to follow to make the chinking procedure go as smoothly and uniformly as possible. First, gather all the materials you will need for the project, including backer rod, good quality chinking material that has a high degree of elasticity, a caulking gun to apply the chinking material, a plentiful supply of foam brushes, bottles of water to mist the chinking as needed, one or two buckets of clean water, a putty knife or scraper to eliminate excess chink, along with a ladder or stepstool, depending upon the height of your work area. Some chinking guns come pre-filled with chinking material, or you can fill your own caulking gun from a 5-pound gallon tub of the material. It helps to have a gun that allows you to change to several different tip sizes.

Before filling the caulking gun with chinking material, coat the inside of the barrel with silicon spray to make the applicator work more smoothly. Keep a water mister handy as you work, in case the chinking material starts to dry out too quickly. Begin by applying an even line of no more than 1/2 inch thick between the logs, then brush over the line with a damp foam brush to smooth out the chinking and remove any excess that has slopped over the line.

As you apply each line, check your work to see that the chinking is adhering to the logs properly. Too thin lines will not provide adequate protection and too thick lines will take too long to properly cure. Clean up any spills or drips to log surfaces as soon as possible before the chinking sets.

Don’t take on too much chink for one chinking process until you get the hang of it. It’s a good idea to buy a small chinking gun as a test unit to perfect your chinking technique before you tackle the job of chinking an entire cabin.

Chinking is an important step in protecting your log home from the onslaught of outdoor elements. It keeps your home more energy efficient, cleaner and more comfortable, and it also makes your home look well cared for and finished. There are different varieties of chinking colors to choose from, so you can decide whether to have the chinking material blend into the logs on your home or compliment or contrast with the logs for a more dramatic effect. Whatever you decide, you will be happy you made the effort to add log home chinking for the benefits it offers.

Laundry sinks, or utility sinks as they are also known, are really important to any home. Having them will not just help you when doing the laundry, but also when bathing your pets, cleaning up from gardening or outdoor work, and doing some spring cleaning. Aside from their practical purposes, more and more people are now becoming concerned about the look of their laundry or utility sinks, even though most are simply placed in a garage or laundry room and not in a location that is more decorative. Some utility sinks are also used as outdoor sinks and people may want a sink that not only meets their functional needs, but also looks good in their outdoor space. Hence, some homeowners have upgraded their standard white laundry tubs to more modern looking ones.

Modern sink designs are really making waves in the market despite the expensive tags that are attached to them. The prices of these sinks typically range from about $200 to $600, depending on the style or design. Compared to standard laundry sinks, which only cost in the neighborhood of $100, these sinks can really be hard on one’s pocket.

So what do these modern sinks have that they cost so much?

Laundry utility sinks have indeed evolved with the times. They are now made from other fine materials such as porcelain, stone and glass. There are also products available that are made from stainless steel, giving the sink a satin-like look. Most laundry utility sinks on the market also offer a stain- and scratch-resistant exterior, so you are assured that the classy look will last long. The surfaces of these sinks are also non-porous so you need not worry about dripping water stains while cleaning. If you are looking to use your utility sink outdoors, however, you will have to give some thought to the type of material you choose to make sure it will stand up well to the elements of the weather (for example, using stone or stainless steel will work well, but you would not want to use a glass sink outdoors).

Some utility sinks have not just improved in terms of looks, but also in terms of usefulness. There are now laundry sinks that have built-in storage spaces. The shelves and drawers are made with firm wood legs and sheeted with medium-density fiberboard (MDF) to prevent warping. There are also utility sink kits that come complete with shelving and storage made from a plastic composite material, giving you a ready made outdoor sink station right out of the box. And, many brands of laundry and utility sinks are also available in different colors, so you can choose the color that best suits your taste or the surrounding decor.

Other features that make this line of modern laundry sinks more expensive are features like built-in soap dishes, washboards and drain boards. Some even have stylish faucets included in the package. Not every homeowner will need to spend the extra money on one of these newer styles of laundry sinks, and most will probably be fine with a basic cheap laundry or utility sink, but if you are placing the sink in a location that it will be very visible, you may want to consider spending a bit more to have your sink looking attractive, rather than being an eyesore. After all, once you’ve installed a laundry or utility sink, you will have many, many years of use from it. This means that any additional expense you lay out up front will bring you added rewards for years to come, and may be worth the extra initial investment.

Merriam Webster’s definition of noise is sound; especially one that lacks agreeable musical quality or is noticeably unpleasant.

Do you want to create a quiet, peaceful outdoor space where you can go and decompress and relax in your favorite garden rocking chair with a good book? Do you live in an area where noise is a constant part of life? Even if you live outside of a city in suburbia or in a rural area, you may have noise invading your life from sources beyond your control, such as traffic from nearby roads, noisy neighbors, or mechanical noises like rattling air conditioners or buzzing lawn mowers. Unfortunately, unpleasant noise can come from all directions. Wouldn’t it be great to have a place where you can enjoy some solitude? Read on to discover ways to reduce the racket around you.

You may need to attack this from several different fronts and with several different types of landscape supplies. A plant barrier alone may not be enough to noticeably reduce the cacophony from a nearby road. This may require a denser barrier and even a competing pleasant sound from a water feature. Here are a few common examples of noise reducing barriers.

Plants

If you choose to go with this method, you will need to create layers of dense shrubbery or hedge that is tall, evergreen and fast growing. This method will not reduce noise by much, but it’s generally more aesthetically pleasing than constructing a concrete barrier or fence. Hedges do make a good visual barrier.

Fast growing hedges, such as Arborvitae (Thuja,) Holly trees, Privet Hedge or Leyland Cypress, will work well for this. Check with your local nursery for hardiness in your area.

Plant several rows thick and stagger so you get a more solid blockade

Depending on your taste, hedges may be trimmed to look more sleek and contemporary or left to grow naturally for a more rustic, natural look.

Fences

This type of noise barrier may be more effective at reducing the clatter around you, but has it’s own drawbacks. You may live in an area that has restrictions on building fences, as many neighborhoods do these days. The cost is another consideration. Depending on the density, length and height of your fence, it is most likely going to cost more than planting a hedge. Keep in mind that the barrier here needs to be above the noise. Here are a few types of privacy fences to consider:

Masonry wall – stone, brick or stucco covered concrete make the best sound barriers due to their density.

Wood fencing – needs to be solid with no gaps between or below the boards, since sound will find the path of least resistance.

Acoustifence – is a heavy mineral filled visco elastic acoustical material. Used primarily in commercial applications, it is also available for residential use. Not as aesthetically pleasing as other barriers, but according to information on their website, it is extremely effective.

Vinyl fencing – has come a long way and is made to simulate a wood appearance. There are obvious benefits in using this type of material, such as low maintenance, durability and installation ease.

Natural Noise Reduction

Berms – may be one of the most effective, economical methods of reducing the clatter from your life. Building a berm in combination with stone or plants can make a pleasing, effective sound barrier.

Water Features – while not technically a barrier, these can be great at counteracting unpleasant sounds with pleasant sounds, like a waterfall, a man made stream that trickles into a pond or a bubbling boulder.

Noise Reduction Technology

Noise cancellation products that work in the same way as noise canceling headphones. A company by the name of Comfozone, Inc. makes several products aimed at noise reduction including a “nature sound generator” with outdoor speakers, acoustic panels and noise traps. Any one of these products may be exactly what you need to create a peaceful environment in your backyard.

The quest for quiet and solitude is something most of us search for at least some time in our lives. The place we normally look for this is in our own homes, for this is where we find sanctuary at the end of each day. Don’t we all deserve a little serenity? Check with your local landscape company for your particular situation, or do it yourself but check out some of the options above for reducing the noise in your life.

You know that first impressions are everything. This is especially true when you are trying to sell your home. Every realtor will tell you that in order to more easily sell your home, you should have your home staged with good looking furniture and should have the yard looking great, but there are also some basic maintenance and cleaning tips that many people overlook that can really make a difference in the first impression that your home gives to potential buyers.

One of the areas that is often overlooked when looking at homes that are for sale is the driveway. If you have a concrete driveway that is in poor shape, it is important to make sure to kill and remove all plants, weeds and grass that are growing up through the cracks. Simply removing the plants will make an instant improvement in the look of the driveway and the overall impression of the home. Next, measure how much concrete would be needed to patch all of the areas that are falling apart. If you have the time and budget to patch the driveway and clean it up, it is worth doing so. If the amount required exceeds your budget, move on to other areas to improve.

If you have a blacktop driveway, it may be time to reseal it. A normal sized driveway can be resealed by one person in an afternoon with only a driveway squeegee and a bucket or two of sealer. A fresh sealed driveway gives your home that fresh, new look for very little cost and time and is definitely worth the effort and money you spend.

The next area that many people overlook is rust. Rust is a surefire way to make your home look like it is uncared for and a bit rundown, and it is definitely worth doing whatever you have to in order to get rid of it. You may have a great washbasin in your laundry room, but if there’s rust stains running down the inside from the faucet, it’s going to look cheap and old. Also look for rust stains under any outside faucets on your home’s foundation or around any other metal surfaces. If you have any rust stains, grab a bottle of CLR and scrub that rust away.

A final tip is to edge your property. Having your lawn unevenly growing over the sidewalk gives your home a haphazard and unkempt look. It only takes a few minutes with the right tool, but really gives your home a neat and organized look.

Hopefully, you can use these simple tips to improve the look of your home before you put it up for sale (although these tips are worthwhile following even if you are not selling your home and just want it to look well maintained). If you are trying to sell it, these maintenance and cleaning tips will give prospective buyers a better first impression of your home. And a better first impression should mean more chance of a sale, and hopefully more money in your pocket!

Although this site is usually dedicated to backyards and gardens, we figured that every backyard and garden has a house attached to it, and therefore can benefit from the information included in this article! Because you probably own a home, we wanted to make sure that you don’t miss out on the home improvements that could qualify you for at least $1500 this year (sometimes even more.)

As we all know, filing tax forms in America causes countless headaches. Many of us struggle with the difference between a “tax credit” and a “tax deduction” and what they really mean. Over the past year, the government has passed several laws that reward homeowners when they purchase energy-efficient home improvement products. Like many other government programs, they come with red tape and requirements. Well, luckily for you, Moonworks has cut through all of the legal mumbo-jumbo and condensed the information into an 11-page downloadable guide, walking you through (and decoding) the fine print product by product, called Home Improvement Tax Credits Explained.

In this guide, you can learn the difference between a “tax credit” and a “tax deduction”. Additionally, explore tax credits from your national and state government that can save you money on energy-efficient products like windows, doors, roofing, insulation, water heaters, solar energy, and more. See below for an excerpt from the guide.

“Through The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (the “Bailout Bill”) and The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (“Stimulus Package”) the federal government is making a significant investment in reducing energy use in the nation’s housing stock. The 2008 Act expanded and extended residential renewable energy tax credits, while the 2009 Act added a tax credit provision for energy efficiency upgrades. When taken together, these two Acts are making it much easier for consumers to both reduce household energy use and switch heating and electrical systems over to renewable energy.

The term, “tax credit” is often confused with “tax deduction”. A tax deduction is a line item like the personal exemption which results in a reduction in taxable income. For example, someone reporting $40,000 as income can deduct the personal exemption of $3,650 from income, resulting in a taxable income of $36,350. This person would be in the 25% tax bracket, so the personal exemption of $3,650 only results in an actual savings of $912.50 (25% of $3,650). On the other hand, a tax credit is a reduction in taxes owed…”

The guide goes on to explain the different rules and regulations regarding various home improvement projects, and how you can qualify for tax credits. For example, here is some info they provide about central air conditioners:

Central Air Conditioners

• National Tax Credit Amount: 30% of the product’s cost up to $1,500. Labor and installation costs can be included if the labor costs are directly related to the onsite preparation, assembly or original installation of the central air. The tax credit cannot be allocated towards a future tax year.

• Criteria for National Tax Credit: The central air must be on an existing primary residence home, as rental property and new construction do not qualify for the credit. For split systems, the HSPF must be 13 or greater with a SEER of 16 or greater. For package systems, the HSPF must be 12 or greater with a SEER of 14 or greater.

• Timeline: The tax credit does not correlate to the date the central air conditioner is purchased, but rather the date it is ‘placed in service’. The central air must be installed and in working condition between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.

Do you know what U-Factor your replacement window needs to be to qualify for a tax credit? Do you know what a U-Factor is? No? Then download the free guide, Home Improvement Tax Credits Explained now.

There’s a lot more to using a pressure washer than just turning it on and blasting all the dirt away. Most people may not realize that there are really three different elements working to create an effective pressure washing process. The three elements are water (which includes temperature), pressure, and chemicals or detergents.

Water pressure is only one aspect you need to know about pressure washing. If you’ve ever used a pressure washer, you’re probably aware that they come with different tips. These tips have different fan widths or degrees which dissipate the water at different fan widths. Depending on the surface you’re washing, you’ll want to use different tips. For concrete you’ll want to use something like a 15 degree tip, depending on the shape of concrete. 15 degrees is pretty direct and you always want to avoid spraying directly, especially towards or in any cracks already in the surface. For decks or wood fences, you’ll want to use a wider fan such as a 40 to 60 degree tip. If you use the wrong tip and too much pressure, you can actually splinter and completely ruin your deck or fence surface.

Pressure washer detergent is the chemical part of the process and is a huge part of making your washing job a success. Most would think that to clean off a driveway all you need is a pressure washer and some hot water. But remember something important about water and oil? They don’t mix! So, in order to really get your concrete or other surface clean, you’re going to need the right detergent specifically for the type of surface and grime that you’re cleaning.

Having the right detergent is especially important because many people think that if it looks clean, then it is clean. But this is not always the case. Like the green mildew you see on a privacy fence, once it’s hit with a pressure washer it can look as good as new, until the wood dries and you notice that the mildew is still there. You want to make sure you use something like oxygen bleach that will actually kill the mold and mildew.

The next time you rent a pressure washer, be sure you’re taking into consideration all three elements of the washing process – pressure, water, and detergents. By doing this, you’ll get the job done right without risking any damage to the surface, and will make sure that the area you clean actually gets clean.

There probably isn’t a bird watcher in the world who hasn’t had to invest in squirrel baffles. Gone are the days when the only visitors to backyard bird feeders were Sparrows and Wrens. These days, there’s another regular guest – and he isn’t easy to keep away.

That’s right – it’s the squirrel. He’s a rodentine acrobat with brains to burn when it comes to finding food!

In all honesty, bird seed has always been popular. Mice and chipmunks pick at the remains fallen on the ground. Crows might pay a visit, keeping every other bird at bay. Grackles can be bullies at the feeder, driving Chickadees and Cardinals into the bushes while they gorge.

But nobody scrounges more seed than squirrels. And while on the one hand it’s hard to blame them – after all, they do have to eat – it can be awfully frustrating to look out at your bird feeder day and after day and see nothing but a gang of squirrels.

So what can you do? How do you stop squirrels? You can start by trying to purchase a squirrel proof feeder from your local bird supply store. Check to be sure you can return it, however, if it doesn’t work. Squirrels are expert climbers and are famous for their daring leaps. They don’t take “no” for an answer easily, and you might be surprised to learn just how squirrel-friendly a squirrel proof feeder can actually be.

You can also put your feeders up on poles. Keep them far away from rooftops and trees and fences – this minimizes the opportunity for squirrels to dive bomb the bird feeder from on high. Then, grease the pole – that’s right, give it a good bath with Vaseline! This is harmless to birds, but can thwart squirrels from scaling upwards.

Or, you can simply skip these steps and buy yourself a decent squirrel baffle. Think of these as shields that you apply to the pole – they can go either below or above (or both) the bird feeder itself, and they stop squirrels from gaining access. You have to follow the instructions for putting squirrel baffles on to a T – again, if you give squirrels even an inch, you’ll soon find them taking the whole mile or more!
