A wrought iron candelabra is, as its name implies, made from wrought iron.  Since wrought iron is a durable and weatherproof material, it is the perfect material to use for outdoor décor.  A black wrought iron candelabra will maintain its good looks over time and will not rust or corrode, even when left out in the elements. 

Also, since wrought iron is a relatively heavy material, you usually won’t have to worry about your wrought iron candelabra blowing away in the wind, or even blowing over when a breeze blows by.  Although this is usually the case, however, you should take care when severe weather or harsh winds are predicted and protect your wrought iron candelabra by bringing it indoors or placing it in a shed or covered storage bench until the weather improves.  Additional precautions should be taken if you have a tall wrought iron floor candelabra since, due to its height, it may be more at risk for being blown over in the wind.

Most often, we think of wrought iron candelabras as being used in or in front of a fireplace.  While you can very well buy a wrought iron fireplace candelabra for use with your outdoor fireplace, there are also many other places that you can use a wrought iron candelabra outdoors that will add to the evening ambiance of your yard.

If you are concerned about safety issues when using an open flame, or it is too windy to keep the candles in your wrought iron candelabra aglow, you may want to replace real candles with the flameless candles that have become so popular these days.  Many of these flameless candles look just like the real thing, but without you having to worry about fire safety or candles blowing out in the wind.  They are a great option for outdoor candelabras.

The first consideration is where you will position the greenhouse.  Stand alone greenhouse models can be placed almost anywhere, but you need to find a spot which will get a lot of sunlight.  Take a look at how the sun spreads over your garden throughout the day, and where any shadows appear before deciding where to place your greenhouse.  Other structures in the garden, such as fences and trees can cause shadows which will block sunlight.  It may be impossible to find the perfect spot, but a compromise is often just fine.   Next you need to make sure there is plenty of space around the greenhouse for easy access.  You will probably need room for a wheel barrow to get in and out.  In addition, you may need to create a pathway to the greenhouse to make it easy to get to.

Size is also important.  You don’t want a huge greenhouse in a small garden, because it will overpower everything else. A large greenhouse may also block light from hitting your neighbors’ yards, so think about them as well – you don’t want to cause any petty arguments over something as simple as the placement of a greenhouse.  On the other hand, you don’t want to get a small greenhouse, only to find out that it doesn’t offer you enough room to plant the things you want to grow.  There is an almost limitless amount of shapes and sizes of greenhouses available to buy these days from places like garden centers and online stores like the Argos catalogue (for those in the UK).  You will most likely have to erect a greenhouse yourself if you buy it through these methods, but the instructions are very straightforward and will save you money over having someone come and build a greenhouse for you on-site.

Paint Cans – Most people have old paint cans in their garages that are simply taking up space and gathering dust.  So why not make them useful and turn them into a garden pot or two?  First off, you have to clean them very well.  If there are any dried up paint residues inside the can, make sure that you scrape those off.  Once it’s all nice and clean, you have to punch several holes at the bottom and sides of the can.  This should let the excess water out whenever you’re watering the plants.  And voila! You now have alternative garden pots that didn’t even cost you a dime.  If you like the look of paint cans holding your flowers (and they do look cute!), but are concerned about any residue paint left over in the ones you have in your garage, you can purchase a few inexpensive empty paint cans at the home improvement store and either leave them as-is, or dress up the exterior of the can to add a bit more interest to your new garden pot alternative.

Old Wooden Boxes – Have you got a few old wood boxes lying around?  Well, if you do, then it’s time to put them to good use.  All you really need to do is clean them up, check if they’re still sturdy enough to hold in the soil and you’re good to go.  If there are no openings on the bottom of the box, you’ll also have to drill a few holes in them for water drainage. You can paint, stain or seal the wood to give it a nicer look and to protect the wood a bit, but you can also opt to keep the boxes in their natural wooden state.

Wheelbarrows - An old wheelbarrow can make a great garden planter if you’re no longer using it to lug items around the yard.  Again, all it needs is a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom and you can fill the space with soil and a few flowers or even make a whole herb garden.

Needless to say, when it comes to finding alternative garden pots, all you really need is do is put your imagination to work.  Almost any object that can hold some soil and can have a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom can work as a place to grow some plants, flowers, or herbs.  In fact, designing your own garden pot can become a fun project for the whole family to enjoy, so do consider getting everyone’s input.

If you need to purchase a seat cushion for your chair, you will find a few differences in the materials used. You may choose to purchase vinyl patio cushions or ones with a softer fabric cover.  The vinyl material is made to be long lasting and also easy to care for.  Generally you can clean these items by simply wiping them down with a damp cloth.  They do not provide as soft or as comfortable a feel as the cotton types do, however, but they are a good choice for active families due to their easy maintenance requirements.  And even if they are left out in the rain, you do not have to worry about them too much.

The cotton or cotton blend fabrics used in cotton patio cushions require more care, but are soft, comfortable and typically more decorative as well.   The cotton fabric covers need to be removed from the padding to clean them.  You can usually spot clean them as long as they don’t get too dirty, but they will eventually need to be more thoroughly cleaned.  You will also have to take your cotton chair cushions in when you are not using them because they are not durable enough to stand up to being outdoors day in and day out.

In addition to the selection of material you choose for your patio cushions, you will also find a wide assortment of colors, patterns and designs to pick from.  This allows you to match the particular cushion with the style of furniture you have, as well as your decorating preferences.  If you own patio furniture sets, you may even find matching colored or patterned fabrics to go along with your chairs, lounges and settees.

Patio chair cushions are generally held in place by tying the attached string around an open portion in the chair’s frame.   Some chair cushions that come along with outdoor furniture sets may have other ways of securing them to the furniture, such as velcro or snaps.  Whatever the method, it is a good idea to secure the cushion to the chair so that if you are not around and the wind blows, your chair cushions do not fly away in the wind.

A good outdoor patio cushion will provide comfort and also be visually appealing, adding to the decorative element of the furniture.  Quality patio chair cushions will also be made from material that is durable, fade resistant, mildew resistant, and easy to clean.  And another benefit to patio cushions is that if you want to change the look of your outdoor furniture, you can simply get a new set of outdoor cushions with a different look, rather than having to replace the entire set of furniture.

Whether your style is oriental, contemporary, southwestern or traditional, there is a durable, easy to clean floor covering for your outdoor living area.  If the country look of a braided rug is what you need, you will be delighted with the fresh new color pallets and variety of selection now available in outdoor braided rugs.  From small rugs to large rugs, as well as those that look like they are made for the outdoors or outdoor rugs that look like they would be more at home in the center of a formal living room, the variety of rugs now made for outdoor use is expansive.

Most reversible outdoor rugs are made of polypropylene (also called olefin construction).  One big advantage to using this material is that the color is applied while the yarn is liquid and is not applied to the surface only.  Obviously, this will produce a more colorfast material, which is important for rugs that are used outdoors.  This material must be chemically enhanced to resist sunlight, or it will deteriorate over time from the sun beating down on it.

Other synthetic fibers used in outdoor rugs to ensure weather and stain resistance are nylon, acrylic, and polyester.  Nylon is the best performer and the most costly, producing a softer feel due to the short fibers of staple yarn.  Nylon is also available in what is called bulk continuous fiber, a longer filament that is plied together to form bundles of yarn.  Polyester is a less expensive material than nylon and is also a staple yarn. Cheaper short fiber yarns can have loose fibers which fall out with traffic on the rug, however.  Always watch for a tight weave when considering polyester outdoor rugs.  Polyester rugs do produce great colors and are fade and stain resistant, though.  All synthetic outdoor rugs are resistant to mildew and can produce a variety of textures through sculpting.

Outdoor carpeting is another option and is available in many sizes and shapes.  You can find carpeting in many of the same fabrics as outdoor rugs, with the main difference between rugs and carpeting being in the way the edges are finished.  Outdoor carpeting is made to cover a complete surface, while outdoor rugs have a specific design within a specific space and are made to only cover a portion of the floor or ground.

For that touch of softness underfoot, whether you are on a patio, deck, porch, or even beside the pool, as well as the durability required of any high traffic outdoor space, an outdoor rug may be just the thing you’re looking for and can add not only comfort but enhanced design to your backyard and garden space.
