A lawn scarifier is a piece of lawn and garden equipment designed to remove thatch, moss and other debris from a lawn. While most people haven’t heard of a lawn scarifier in the U.S., lawn scarifiers are better known in other parts of the world, such as the UK. Lawn scarifiers operate in a similar manner to a lawn mower but have a rotating cassette on the bottom with a series of tines that can break up thatch, moss and debris without otherwise harming the grass. For this reason, owning a lawn scarifier can help you achieve a great looking and healthy lawn.

How To Use a Lawn Scarifier

Using a lawn scarifier is a relatively simple process and will depend in part on what type of equipment you own. If you have an electric or petrol powered lawn scarifer, you just have to guide the equipment in the right direction while the motor moves it along the area to be dethatched. If you have a manual lawn scarifier, you will have to push the equipment in a similar manner to pushing a lawn mower. If you have a scarifying rake or rolling rake, you will have to push or drag the rake across the area to be dethatched until all of the dead debris within the lawn is removed.

No matter what type of lawn scarifier you use, however, it is important to make sure you clean up and remove any thatch or debris that is loosened for your lawn, unless your equipment has vacuum capabilities to suck up the debris into a bag for disposal. If you leave the loosened thatch on the lawn, it can do just as much damage to your grass as if you had never dethatched in the first place.

Manual vs. Electric vs. Gas / Petrol Lawn Scarifier

When it comes to buying a lawn scarifier, you have a few choices. You can get an electric lawn scarifier, a petrol lawn scarifier or a manual lawn scarifier. Although electric lawn scarifiers run cleaner and quieter than their petrol or gas-powered cousins, one of the main limitations is that you need to plug it in. If you have a small lawn, this may not be much of a problem, but if your lawn is relatively large, you may have to run a series of extension cords all over the lawn in order to get your lawn scarifier to operate across the whole lawn. This makes a petrol lawn scarifier a more popular option, since it removes the limitations caused by having to plug in electric models. Petrol lawn scarifiers are also more powerful and can complete a job more quickly.

You can also get a manual lawn scarifier which you push to operate. A manual or push lawn scarifier works in a similar fashion to a push lawn mower – you simply have to supply the energy to make the equipment operate. If you just need to dethatch a small section of lawn, you may prefer to opt for a lawn scarifying rake that simply has long, stiff tines on the end to grab any thatch, moss or dead grass between blades of healthy grass. A lawn scarifying rolling rake also has wheels on the edges to make it easier to use.

Independent Lawn Scarifier vs. Lawn Scarifier Attachment

Many people purchase a separate lawn scarifier in addition to their lawnmower. If, however, you have a lawn tractor, you can also opt to buy a lawn scarifier attachment for lawn tractors. The attachment operates just like a motorized lawn scarifier, except it makes super-easy work of dethatching your lawn, since all you have to do is ride on the mower while the attachment does its job.

Lawn Scarifier Options

In addition to the choices available between a manual, electric or petrol lawn scarifier and an independent or lawn scarifier attachment for a lawn tractor, there are also some options to consider when purchasing the equipment. You may have options as to the size of the tines on the scarifier and determining the proper size will depend on the type of lawn you have. You can also buy a lawn scarifier with aerator capabilities. This will allow you to not only dethatch your lawn, but to also create plugs that aerate your lawn, giving it room to breathe and allowing it to grow healthier.

Lawn Scarifier Brands

There are a number of companies that sell lawn scarifiers. Some of the more popular brands are Bosmere, Qualcast, Agri-Fab, Atco and Midwest Rake. You can buy lawn scarifiers from stores that sell garden equipment, lawn tractors and aerators, or you can even buy lawn scarifiers online from places like Amazon and other lawn care-related retailers.

A garden tool rack is the perfect storage accessory to store all of your garden tools. This is a useful storage solution if you are an avid gardener, or even if you are just a homeowner with a small piece of property to take care of, since either way you inevitably have at least a few tools that can use some organizing. A garden tool rack can make it easy to find what you need in a moment, without having to sort through tons of objects strewn about the garage or shed. Garden tool racks can also keep your tools in better shape, since it keeps them away from water, dirt and debris that can be lying on the ground.

So, before you buy a garden tool rack, you have a few decisions to make. Here are a few to consider:

What will I be storing in my garden tool rack?

Garden tool racks come in an assortment of shapes and sizes. You can buy garden tool storage racks that are designed to house long handled tools, such as hoes, spades and rakes, or you can find small garden tool racks that are specifically made to organize smaller tools, such as weeders, small shovels and plant spikes. Some large garden tool racks will have multiple compartments that allow you to store both long handled and smaller garden tools and will even have a place for more awkward sized tools.

Where will I be placing my garden tool rack?

It’s a good idea to decide where you plan on putting your garden tool rack before you buy one. You can find floor garden tool racks that sit securely on the floor with spaces for tools to fit right in. You can also buy wall mounted garden tool racks that are secured to the wall and provide spaces and compartments for hanging your tools, keeping them off the floor. If space is limited, you can even buy a corner garden tool rack that fits snugly in the corner of a garage or shed and provides out-of-the-way space for storing tools. If you have a big yard or just love to garden and often need lots of tools, you may even want to consider a portable garden tool rack. These garden tool organizers are on wheels so you can easily transport your tools around the garden with you, while keeping them all together and organized.

What material is best for a garden tool rack?

Most garden tool racks are made from some type of plastic or resin material. This is because this material is durable, long-lasting, and easy to care for. Plastic and resin hold up well to contact with moisture and dirt, two components that are often found on garden tools. They are also sturdy enough to contain tools without easily falling over and will not damage tools due to sharp edges. Metal garden tool racks are also available, although metal, steel or aluminum is normally coated with a plastic-like coating to protect the metal from rusting and to protect the garden tools from being scratched up.

What companies make garden tool racks?

There are numerous companies that make garden tool racks and they all come in a variety of different styles and sizes. Some of the more popular garden tool rack manufacturers include:

Rubbermaid

Suncast

Arrow

Plano

Continental

Racor

How much do garden tool racks cost?

Of course, most people don’t want to spend a ton on a garden tool rack that simply organizes their tools. They’d rather put their money into high quality tools that make their gardening chores easier and more productive. The good news is that you don’t have to spend a lot to organize your tools! You can buy a garden tool rack for as little as $10 to as much as $100 or more. Most quality garden tool racks will run you in the neighborhood of $25 – $45.

When it comes to buying a hedge trimmer to keep your landscaping looking neat and tidy, you have two basic choices – a petrol hedge trimmer (also known as a gas hedge trimmer) and an electric model. While both have their advantages and disadvantages, a petrol hedge trimmer will provide you with more functionality than its electric powered cousin, making petrol hedge trimmers the more widely purchased option for homeowners. They will also provide you with more power, offering the perfect solution to tackle heavy-duty work.

If you are looking to buy a petrol hedge trimmer, you should first know what your different options are so that when you head to a store and see a display of petrol hedge trimmers, you can have a better idea of just what you need (and just what you don’t). This will make the process of buying a petrol powered hedge trimmer a much easier task.

Here are a few things to consider when buying a petrol hedge trimmer:

Horsepower – a petrol hedge trimmer is only as powerful as the horsepower of its engine. Although petrol hedge trimmers are generally more powerful than electric models, their strength and power will be determined by how many horsepower the engine is. The higher the number, the more powerful the trimmer will be.

Fuel capacity – petrol hedge trimmers are the right option for those needing more high powered trimming capabilities, since hedge trimmers run on petrol rather than electricity will provide more power. If you plan on doing a lot of cutting, you should look for a model with a large fuel capacity. If you’re just using it for an occasional light trimming, you can probably opt for a model with a smaller fuel tank.

Blades – most petrol hedge trimmers will have double reciprocating blades, but different models will come with different sized blades. As a general rule, models with longer blades will provide you with more versatility for what you can cut with the trimmer. Keep in mind, however, that sometimes bigger is not always better. If you have a hard time handling the size of the trimmer, you may be better off going with a petrol hedge trimmer with smaller blades.

Handles – all trimmers have handles that are used to hold the trimmer while in use. Look for a model with rotating handles so that you can position your hands in the most comfortable way possible. This is especially useful if you use the machine a lot, so you can change the angle of your hands to avoid fatigue brought about by prolonged use.

Locks – petrol hedge trimmers should have trigger locks to keep anyone from activating the blade by accident. This is an important safety feature, and is most especially critical to have if you have children in the house.

Starter – petrol hedge trimmers are not quite as easy to start up as electric powered models (in which you simply push a switch after plugging it in). Look for petrol hedge trimmer models with easy-start mechanisms, which should make starting the trimmer up as easy as pushing a switch, just like an electric model.

Performance features – there are a number of other features you should look for when purchasing a petrol hedge trimmer. For example, an anti-vibration feature will keep the engine running better, longer by reducing the amount of fatigue on the engine caused by vibration of the blades. Some models will give you the option of directing the exhaust in any direction you want, so you are not breathing in the fumes while working. There are other features to look for as well, but these are two of the more common ones.

Once you have decided which features are most important to you, you can look for petrol hedge trimmers on sale at home improvement stores, tool centers, big box stores and even online. It is best to stick with a reputable brand of trimmer, but be sure to compare petrol hedge trimmer prices among top brands before making your final purchase. This will ensure that you wind up with a quality trimmer without it having to cost you a fortune. Be on the lookout for petrol hedge trimmer sales or discount coupons that offer a percent discount during certain times of the year. Spring and fall are the most popular times to purchase petrol hedge trimmers, so sales are most likely to occur during these times.

One option you have to keep costs down is to buy a reconditioned petrol hedge trimmer rather than a new model. While shiny new petrol hedge trimmers may be enticing, you can often buy the same model that has been reconditioned and functions just as well for a fraction of the cost, or you can opt to spend as much as you would’ve on a new model and buy a higher quality petrol hedge trimmer than you otherwise could’ve afforded. Either way you will wind up with the functionality you need to keep your landscaping neat and well trimmed.

Rotovators are excellent tools for people looking to create beautiful, enduring gardens. They are a form of motorised cultivator which churns up soil using tines. This serves to aerate the soil and create a smooth bed that is perfect for planting. If you are looking to create a new garden or lay down a bed of grass, getting a petrol rotovator is a great idea.

Rotovators, like most garden tools, come in different sizes. If you only have a small patch of land to work with, you can pick up a small tool. On the other hand, big jobs will require substantial pieces of machinery – in this case it is best to pick up a heavy duty hydraulic rotovator. Just be sure to choose something that you can operate yourself. You will need to push your rotovator around, so there is no point in buying a huge one if you can’t budge it. If you’re thinking about getting a big rotovator, also be sure that you have the room to store it when not in use.

You will also need to make your selection of what type of rotovator to buy with the condition of your soil in mind. If you are lucky enough to have a smooth, soft bed then you can get by with just about any machine. However, if the soil you are working with is hard and dry, you may need to invest in a more powerful rotovator, which will churn up even the toughest soil.

Also be sure to find a machine which is reliable and sturdy. For example, you can look for the Mantis brand, as they generally sell very good rotovators, while the now defunct Merry Tiller line is also a good option for used rotovators. If you only have a few jobs to do and don’t want to buy an expensive machine, you can go to tool hire websites to find great rotovators that can be rented on a daily basis. Renting a rotovator may be your best option if you don’t plan on using this piece of equipment very often and this is an option that many homeowners and garden enthusiasts select.

Rotovators are excellent tools which will make a noticeable difference to your seed beds. Buying or renting a rotovator is a crucial step in developing an amazing garden and can reap great rewards in terms of the ultimate health and beauty of your garden. These are, however, serious machines, so be sure to have safety in mind when operating them and make sure that children do not use this equipment unsupervised.

A leaf sweeper is one of the best pieces of garden equipment you can invest in to help achieve a beautiful lawn. It keeps your yard from getting buried under last season’s fallen debris or summer’s grass trimmings. Keeping your lawn’s appearance manicured and professionally maintained is effortless with the help of leaf sweepers.

The Basics

The leaf sweeper, or lawn sweeper as it is also known, is a mechanical implement used to collect debris such as fallen leaves, grass clippings or any litter from paved or level surfaces like a lawn. It is operated by a revolving mechanism that picks up the leaves or other debris and places it into a container for later discard.

Lawn leaf sweepers have two main types – manual or hand powered, and motorized. The motorized models can be further classified into a push or rolling leaf sweeper or a tow behind leaf sweeper. They can also be bought with a built-in shredder attached. Determining the best choice for you will depend on your needs.

Push leaf sweepers or hand-powered leaf sweepers use gears for the brush mechanism to rotate picking up debris and transferring it into an attached bag called a hopper. The height of the rollers can be adjusted so they can be used on different surfaces, including non-grassy areas such as patio slabs or stone walkways.

Powered lawn sweepers are similar to push lawn sweepers, except that they use gasoline, oil or electricity to operate the brush mechanism. These are ideal to use for larger lawns and gardens. The height of their rollers can also be modified. One disadvantage of powered lawn sweepers is the noise they generate.

A powered leaf collector with a shredder allows the user to produce mulch with the leaves that it collects. The shredder, however, limits it use on certain surfaces. Towed lawn sweepers operate very much like the others, but instead of being pushed, they need a small vehicle, such as a garden tractor, lawnmower or ATV to lug it around. The brush heights may be modified as well so it can be used on different surfaces.

Making the Decision to Buy

Spending money on a leaf lawn sweeper takes some consideration. In addition to what they cost, you also need to think about storage. Tow lawn sweepers use up a large space to store them. Because they are equipped with a large hamper or hopper, it is not simple to stow them away. Hand powered lawn sweepers, on the other hand, take up less space to store compared with towed sweepers. They are smaller and some can even be folded. Some are even light enough to hang on the wall right next to your garden tool rack.

Another benefit to choosing manual leaf sweepers over powered sweepers is that since they require no power, they are less harmful to the environment.

The size of your yard and how much debris you typically need to clean up will also help you figure out which is the best lawn sweeper to buy to meet your needs. Hopper size will also be determined by these factors.

Where you buy a lawn sweeper should also be considered. Look for a reputable supplier and look for manufacturers that offer good warranties. Warranties are important in case a problem arises. Availability of parts should also be considered. It’s also a good idea to check up front to see if finding leaf sweeper replacement parts is easy for the particular model you are considering. You don’t want to buy a model that you will later find out is near impossible to find parts for, leaving you stuck to buy a whole new apparatus down the road.

In addition to all of these considerations, lawn sweeper prices are another important factor to think about. The quality, type and model of your sweeper will depend on the money you are willing to spend.

Leaf Sweeper Maintenance

Different types of lawn and leaf sweepers have their own advantages and disadvantages, but one thing they have in common is their need for proper maintenance. Caring for your sweeper ensures that they deliver the best performance. Apart from this, keeping them well-maintained helps ensure that they last for a very long time.

Maintenance of leaf sweepers is as simple as following the directions in the User’s Manual which shows you how the machine is operated, cleaned and replaced with parts. Below are general instructions on cleaning your leaf sweeper, which is generally common to all models:

Before every use, inspect the overall condition of the sweeper. Check for damage, loose screws, misalignment, sticks or breaks in moving parts.

Oil the brush shaft bearings twice a year.

Clean the hopper. Dispose of everything in it after each use. Use a dry rag to clean the insides.

Avoid using it on wet leaves. If this happens, make sure to clean and wipe after use.

Clean the wheels regularly. Apply an even coat of light grease after. Make sure not to overtighten the wheel bolt and nut.

Clean the brushes. Remove the hopper first then wipe the brushes.

Wipe the sweeper down after every use. Just take a rag and wipe it off.

Store the leaf sweeper properly after use.

Proper Handling

It is also important to follow safety precautions for the health and safety of the user. Below is a list of general advice to follow:

Do not use leaf or lawn sweepers in extremely wet places.

Keep children away.

Use only identical replacement parts.

Do not use a leaf sweeper for any job except that for which it is intended.

Do not force the sweeper.

Store when not in use.

Do not perform any maintenance or make repairs while the sweeper is moving.

Green Living with Leaf Sweepers

One great benefit in using a leaf sweeper is its help in protecting the environment, especially those not powered by gas or oil. They do not emit fumes, and unlike leaf blowers or leaf vacuums, they do not add to carbon emissions, which increase the health risk for respiratory diseases.

Below are more environmental benefits of leaf sweepers:

Harvests weed seeds and reduce their growth, which in turn reduces the need for a chemical weed control service.

Reduces the aggravation of allergy and hay fever because of grass clippings.

Reduces health problems such as asthma and hay fever because of grass, tree and weed pollen.

Reduces the risk of fires because of debris.

Helps eliminate potential breeding grounds for insects like flies.

Some debris can become potential sources of alternative fuel. Grass, for example, is now being converted into bio crude oil.

Collected debris can also be made into mulch or compost. Compost is any organic matter that has been decayed for use of aiding the growth of plants and trees in particular. Mulch on the other hand is used to suppress growth, weeds specifically, and should not have undergone decomposition.

To make compost, collect shredded leaves and place them in a compost bin. Mix and water the ingredients. Turn the mixture over and swap the layers to ensure that decomposition becomes even. Once decomposed thoroughly, transfer it to another container.

To make mulch, just shred leaves and they are ready to use. Unlike compost, you do not need to do any treatments on it once placed in a bin.

Keeping your backyard and garden clean and your lawn looking perfectly manicured takes a lot of effort and time, and buying a leaf sweeper will probably be the best investment you will ever make in this aspect.

Regularly using a dethatching rake to remove excessive thatch build-up will keep your lawn green and healthy.

Thatch is a collection of lawn debris, like fallen leaves, moss and grass clippings, that collect together as they decompose in the grass. Some thatch is good for the lawn, but too much creates a barrier that can become virtually impenetrable for the nutrients, water and air that should flow down to the grass roots. Dethatching removes the extra thatch so the grass can thrive.

Manual Dethatching Rakes:

Manual dethatching rakes are used liked most other types of rakes. You simply place the tines of the dethatching rake on the surface of the ground and pull back to move the rake across the surface of the lawn. Use several small strokes in multiple directions to pull up the thatch over an area and then move onto the next. The sharp, two-bladed tines cut through and remove the thatch, which you then collect and remove. Unless the thatch layer is very thick, manual raking is fine, though doing a large area of grass this way will take time. Even if you plan to dethatch with another method, a manual dethatching rake is still useful for touch-ups or in-between dethatchings, and, at around $30 for a well-made rake that will last you a decade or so, it is well worth the price.

Tow-Behind Dethatchers:

Tow-behind dethatchers are attached to trailers or riding lawn mowers and are then pulled around the lawn. There are also special attachments for some lawn mowers that you can purchase to turn them into a dethatcher.

Power Dethatching Rakes:

Power dethatching rakes are gas or electric-powered machines that are run over the ground to remove the thatch with bladed reels or spring tines (the latter designed for delicate grasses and a gentler removal). These lawn dethatching rakes have various settings and adjustments that allow for versatility in how much thatch is pulled up and the amount of grass that comes with it.

With all of these types of detatching rakes, it is best to go over the grass twice in opposing directions to better remove the thatch in your lawn. No matter which lawn dethatching rake you buy, however, taking the time to routinely dethatch your lawn will go a long way towards keeping it healthy and strong.

As spring turns into summer, homeowners the world over are pulling their lawnmowers out of the garage or shed. If you are like most people, you just park your ride on lawnmower late in the fall and don’t think about it until you need it again in the spring. While this works out fine for many people, some people do have a few problems. What should you do if your lawnmower won’t start again? Here are some tips to get you mowing again.

Before you take your ride on lawnmower into a shop for costly repairs, there are some easy things you can check for at home yourself. More often than not, you can save yourself a lot of money by doing some troubleshooting and seeing if your problem can be fixed easily yourself.

The first thing you can check for if your ride on lawnmower won’t start is bad gasoline. If a riding lawn mower has been sitting in the garage for 7 months straight, there is a chance that the gas in the tank is bad. No matter which type of mower you have, it should have a gas tank drain plug on the bottom of the tank to allow you to drain the gasoline. Try replacing it with fresh gas and see if it works.

Another common culprit of ride on lawnmower problems is the spark plug. A lawnmower engine is pretty simple, so the spark plug should be fairly easy to find. Pull out the wire attached to the spark plug and unscrew the plug to inspect it. If it looks really black or worn, bring it to a landscaping supply store and buy a replacement for a few bucks.

If neither of these two things will do the trick, other common problems that ride on lawnmowers have are clogged fuel pumps, dead batteries, and clogged air filters. With the exception of a clogged fuel pump, charging a battery and replacing the air filters are easy tasks that pretty much any homeowner can accomplish themselves.

Ride-on lawnmowers can save homeowners lots of time when it comes time to mow the lawn in comparison to push lawnmowers, but they do need a bit of maintenance to keep them operating properly. The good news is that most of the time, you can fix any riding lawn mower problems on your own, without having to bring the mower into a shop for repairs or having to get someone to come out to fix your ride on lawnmower at your home. So that means that the costs to get the mower back into working order shouldn’t be high, and you should be back to riding on your lawn mower again in virtually no time.

The shovel is the main tool in your garden shed. All shovels make holes in the dirt, but there are several things that should be considered before you purchase one. Although there are specialty varieties available, you will want to start with a basic, well-made garden shovel. As you gain gardening experience, you may find that you have a need for a trenching spade, for example, but until you know for sure that it is something you’ll use frequently, you should save your money.

A good, basic shovel will have a metal, round-pointed head attached to a handle. The straight, wooden handle shovel has been around for decades, and is still the most popular choice today.

A “D” handle shovel is traditionally shorter in length than the straight handled types. The shorter handle gives you more leverage as you lift your load. While this makes it ideal for some things, such as lifting loosened soil out of a trench, it is harder on your back for most digging tasks because it forces you to bend over as you dig.

Ergonomic handles are shaped to fit your hands and enable you to dig in a way that is less painful to your back, shoulders and arms. Another feature that is available on some ergonomic shovels is a height adjustment, making it a truly customizable tool.

The weight of a shovel can also be a factor in your decision. If it is too heavy for you to use for long periods of time, it will be a waste of money. If it is too lightweight, the head can bend and the handle can even break under pressure. If you are a weekend gardener, you probably won’t be using a garden shovel as many hours as a professional landscaper, so you should be more concerned with durability than weight.

Shovel handles now come in a variety of materials, but the traditional wood version is still the most popular. Ash is commonly used because of its strength and durability. A newer handle material is fiberglass. It is more durable than wood, but it also wears over time and can break under extreme pressure.

Shovel blades are typically made from tempered steel. They are usually sharpened on the bottom edge to help slice into the dirt. A well-designed shovel will feature a footrest formed into the top edge of the blade so you can use your foot to help push the shovel deeper into the dirt.

Before you head to the store, you should spend a little time researching the different types of shovels and the price ranges that are available, but nothing that you read can take the place of actually holding the shovel in your hand. If it is not comfortable, you probably won’t use it as much and it will be a waste of money. Today, there are so many options of shovels available that you should be able to find one that not only fits your hands, but also fits your budget.

If you happen to be in the commercial lawn care or landscaping business, there are a few tools that will be absolutely necessary for you to own. There are also those tools that will not be completely necessary. However, they are the kind of tools that will make your job a great deal easier and also a lot faster. One of these such tools is a commercial leaf vacuum. Even if you are a homeowner with a large backyard or expanse of lawn that does not hire a professional to clean up your yard, you may want to consider a more commercial model of leaf vacuums, since they work so much more efficiently and effortlessly than the residential leaf vacuums on the market.

These leaf vacuums will help you to never again have to rake the leaves or grass clippings from a customer’s yard. They work so well, in fact, that you will probably find no reason to continue to keep a rake with you (although its still a good idea to have a few on hand for when you need to get into hard to reach places). And the time and backbreaking effort they save you is usually well worth the price of the equipment, especially if lawn care is your livelihood.

Commercial leaf vacuums come in a wide variety of styles. The most basic and most inexpensive leaf vacuum models look something like a standard leaf blower. They will have a long nozzle that is connected to the vacuum motor. Once the leaves or grass is picked up by the vacuum, they will be sucked into a large bag. Usually these blowers will have some kind of mechanism inside that will chop and compost the debris as it moves through to the bag. This means that you will be able to hold a great deal of waste before you have to stop to empty the receptacle.

There are also more advanced leaf vacuum styles on the market that will hook up to the back of your lawn mower and pick up the grass and leaves as you mow over them. These are a bit more expensive, but they can save you even more time than the standard vacuum types and are especially beneficial if you are cleaning up large yards full of leaves and debris. Many of these models will also not only get the job done faster and easier, but they will pick up larger pieces of debris, such as twigs and small rocks, so you can really get the lawn cleaned up nicely.

If you are considering investing in a commercial leaf vacuum, you are sure to find a model that will work for you and fit both your needs and your budget. And no matter what type of leaf vacuum you choose, you will be thrilled with the amount of time that you will save by not having to remove debris by hand with a rake.

There’s a lot more to using a pressure washer than just turning it on and blasting all the dirt away. Most people may not realize that there are really three different elements working to create an effective pressure washing process. The three elements are water (which includes temperature), pressure, and chemicals or detergents.

Water pressure is only one aspect you need to know about pressure washing. If you’ve ever used a pressure washer, you’re probably aware that they come with different tips. These tips have different fan widths or degrees which dissipate the water at different fan widths. Depending on the surface you’re washing, you’ll want to use different tips. For concrete you’ll want to use something like a 15 degree tip, depending on the shape of concrete. 15 degrees is pretty direct and you always want to avoid spraying directly, especially towards or in any cracks already in the surface. For decks or wood fences, you’ll want to use a wider fan such as a 40 to 60 degree tip. If you use the wrong tip and too much pressure, you can actually splinter and completely ruin your deck or fence surface.

Pressure washer detergent is the chemical part of the process and is a huge part of making your washing job a success. Most would think that to clean off a driveway all you need is a pressure washer and some hot water. But remember something important about water and oil? They don’t mix! So, in order to really get your concrete or other surface clean, you’re going to need the right detergent specifically for the type of surface and grime that you’re cleaning.

Having the right detergent is especially important because many people think that if it looks clean, then it is clean. But this is not always the case. Like the green mildew you see on a privacy fence, once it’s hit with a pressure washer it can look as good as new, until the wood dries and you notice that the mildew is still there. You want to make sure you use something like oxygen bleach that will actually kill the mold and mildew.

The next time you rent a pressure washer, be sure you’re taking into consideration all three elements of the washing process – pressure, water, and detergents. By doing this, you’ll get the job done right without risking any damage to the surface, and will make sure that the area you clean actually gets clean.

A vacuum cleaner is an indispensable device for cleaning the home. Modern technology has led to the manufacture of sleek and handy vacuums for regular use for interior home cleaning, keeping carpets and other types of floors free from dirt with relatively minimal effort. Leaf vacuums are a new revolution that can now help homeowners in tidying up the exterior of the home effortlessly as well.

Leaf vacuums work in a manner that is somewhat similar to regular vacuums. They contain a nozzle powered by a motor to vacuum leaves, grass and other dust particles in the garden by sucking them up through the nozzle. Leaf blower vacuums scatter the leaves from an area that you don’t want them towards an area that you do, while leaf vacuums collect the leaves and other debris in a bag during the vacuuming process, preventing them from scattering all over your yard.

There are several benefits of using these products to vacuum leaves. A leaf blower vacuum can function as both a leaf blower to move leaves from place to place and a collecting agent which makes it easy to compost collected leaves or dispose of them. So, you can either blow leaves across the yard or suck them up through the vacuum feature. Leaf vacuums include a collection bag to collect leaves and debris, making it easy for composting or disposal.

The simplicity of using leaf vacuums is another added benefit. Raking and blowing leaves in the backyard is time consuming and back-breaking, and a wind spell can easily send your pile of leaves scattering across the lawn again after all of your hard work. Leaf vacuums provide a cleaner backyard or garden, since the leaves are collected and dumped into the garbage or compost pile. Hence, there is no chance of re-scattered grass and leaves.

Leaf vacuums also reduce the time spent in cleaning the lawn and exterior of the house. They use minimal electricity and are eco-friendly. Using a leaf vacuum might require you to empty the leaf bag once in a while, but nevertheless it is an easy task. Leaf vacuuming also relieves you of the back aches and body pains caused due to constant bending while cleaning the yard manually or with a rake.

Prices of leaf vacuums depend on their size and horsepower. A handy vacuum can be found from around $70 onwards, and leaf vacuum prices can go higher depending on brands and the power used to operate them, as well as the features of the tool. But, no matter what the price, a leaf vacuum is an ideal product for hassle free lawn and garden care, saving you loads of time and also lots of aches and pains.

There is a saying that goes “when you use a used material, you will inherit the problems of the owner of that old material…” So, is buying a used chainsaw a good practice? This is a question that is often asked when planning to buy a used product, and especially a tool like a chainsaw. Buying a used chainsaw over a new chainsaw often brings out this question. “Is it practical? Or is it just a waste of money?” But before you can give your honest opinion, there are some things to be considered first.

One important consideration is your budget. It is always a good idea to check for chainsaw sales first. If you have enough money to spend, buying a new or unused chainsaw is a good idea. However, if your budget is limited, buying a used chainsaw may be a better option. You may have to decide if you are better off buying a quality used chainsaw as opposed to a lesser quality new chainsaw if you need to stick to a certain budget. If you decide to buy a used chainsaw, follow these suggestions while shopping so as to avoid any potential drawbacks and to make it easier to find just what you are looking for.

There are always garage or yard sales around. Look for them in the classified ads of your local newspaper. Some will even advertise what types of items they are selling, so you’ll know if there are tools available even before you go.

When you find the chainsaw that you like, try to operate it so that you will know whether it is still workable or not. Also, ask directly about any issues or problems the tool may have and why the person is getting rid of it – this may give you some insight into the operating quality of the chainsaw and whether it is worth buying.

Always be alert for farm sales and auctions. Sometimes you can find good used chainsaws in a farm auction.

Visit tool outlets, because there might be used chainsaws for sale there and chances are they are in decent condition. If there are none available there, the owner might be able to give you referrals.

Surf the internet for chainsaws for sale. Often you can find the best deals online and if you do a little research and searching, you can usually get new or used chainsaws at really awesome prices.

If you buy a used chainsaw, you may have to consider sharpening the tool to get it back in top working order. Sharpening used chainsaws can sometimes be a time consuming process, but if you buy premium brand saws or ones that look like they’ve been well maintained or have not been used much, you may not have to sharpen the chainsaw at all, or if you do, it will be a less time consuming process. Chainsaw sharpening is a very tiresome procedure, so companies see to it that most chain sharpening tools have attachments that preset the teeth sharpening process. Always sharpen the tooth first in one direction. When you have completely sharpened the left and right angle teeth, do it again to sharpen the opposite teeth.

When buying used chainsaws, you should stick to quality manufacturers that you know you can depend on. If you buy products from these brands, you can be more assured that they are reliable, dependable and can stand long-term use as long as they are properly maintained. If well maintained, a quality used chainsaw can serve you as well as a new chainsaw.

It is sometimes difficult to make the decision about whether you should buy a used chainsaw or a new one if you are working within a certain budget. But, if you take into consideration the quality of the chainsaw you are buying, how well it has been maintained and how much it has been used, it will be easier for you to decide if buying a used chainsaw is worth the investment.

Everyone should have at least one automotive floor jack in their garage. Even if you don’t work on cars very often, sooner or later it’ll come in handy. For example, you might need to change a tire or even swap on a set of winter tires, and it’s much easier to do with a real jack than a cheap jack that comes with most cars. It’s important to figure out what features you need though, before you head out to buy one.

There are a couple things to look for when buying a jack, especially if it’s the only jack you’ll be buying. One big thing to look at is quality. Of course, you want to get as high quality a jack as possible for your money. Another is jack height. The jack points on cars are a lot lower than you’d expect and a lot of jacks can’t fit under lower or smaller cars. They do make jacks that are specifically designed to have a lower entry point when the jack is completely lowered and you should try to find a model with this design, if possible.

One of the biggest concerns is whether the jack can hold the weight of the car. Check how much your car weighs and compare that to the recommend load on the jack. The jack should be able to hold 1.5 times the car’s weight for it to be safe. The last thing you need is a trip to the hospital with a smashed hand or worse because of a car repair accident.

Knowing what you want and finding it are two different things. Luckily, present day technology makes comparing automotive floor jacks much easier than 15 years ago. With places like Amazon, you can quickly see what hundreds of people think about any given jack with just the click of a button. You can see the automotive jacks with the highest review and also which ones tend to break after a short period of time. Once you’ve found the one that fits you best, you can head around to a lot of the online automotive parts stores and compare prices, or you can just buy your automotive floor jack on Amazon, since their prices are usually competitive with other online retailers. Prices will most likely vary a bit and with some searching you should be able to find a great deal. Keep an eye out for coupon codes to help save an extra 10% if possible.

Scaffold towers are now a fairly common sight and are often used in exterior home improvement projects, but they never used to be in the past and there was a good reason for this – scaffolding was something that only people with years of experience and training could safely erect, so they weren’t for the average homeowner to use. The structures were more often than not tied into a building that was being constructed or worked on, and when the building was finished, the ties would have to be removed and this left gaps in the mortar. It was then some poor soul’s job to go over the entire structure of the building filling in the gaps that were left by the scaffolding. Now, however, there are scaffold towers which are freestanding structures that anyone can easily assemble and safely use.

Scaffold towers have also decreased in price so much that they are now within the grasp of the DIYer and people in the trade that only use scaffolding every once in a while. A freestanding tower requires no securing to the building being worked on and consequently more people are willing to use them because they don’t damage the external appearance of the building. This, combined with the fact that they are practical and cheap, is a major driving force behind why you are now seeing so many of them.

This is not the only reason that scaffolding towers are becoming popular, though. Most towers come with adjustable legs with casters on the bottom of them, which makes it very easy to wheel the entire scaffold tower along the length of the home or building. Traditionally a scaffold structure would span the entire length of the building that was being worked on because you certainly wouldn’t dismantle it and then rebuild it on the other side – it just wouldn’t be feasible. The fact that the legs on the bottom of scaffold towers are adjustable means that you can easily erect a scaffold tower safely even on uneven ground.

The new scaffold tower kits that are available are incredibly easy to assemble and anybody can do it. It is almost impossible to assemble the towering incorrectly, so you can be assured of having a safe structure to work from. Of course, if you are working outside high up on a scaffold tower, there are some extra safety precautions that you need to take. Aluminium-scaffoldtowers.com has much more information about using scaffolding towers safely, both outdoors and indoors.

Aerators for lawns work in slightly different ways, but each kind improves the lawn by creating holes in the soil that allow roots to grow deeper and stronger with better nutrient and water flow through the dirt. A coring aerator for lawns does the best job since it removes dirt from the ground in the form of small plugs or cores, leaving holes a few inches deep that will take time to close up. This means the roots have more space and improved access for a longer tiime. These aerators include manual, gas-powered and tow-behind models.

Manual Coring Aerators:

A coring manual aerator is stepped into the ground with a foot on the pronged-crosspiece and then pulled back out by hand. With only two or three coring prongs to aerate, it takes a while to make a lot of holes in an entire lawn this way. If the ground is particularly hard, dense, compacted or dry, it can be challenging to get them into the dirt and remove quality cores. They are fine for smaller lawns and are nice to have for doing more frequent aeration in problem areas or getting any spots the other types of aerators missed.

Gas Powered Coring Aerators:

Probably the most popular aerator for lawns, the gas-powered machine is operated like a lawnmower as you walk behind it, though there are some models that you can stand on. They can be twice as heavy as lawnmowers and challenging to turn. Ones that are self-propelled are less tiring to use as are the kind that have power-lift, which is great for changing directions. They are more expensive to buy, but can be rented for $40-$50 for a half-day, which is plenty of time to do an average residential lawn.

Tow Behind Coring Aerators:

Tow-behind coring aerators rely on something else to move them, like a lawnmower or tractor. They usually make the best holes – deep and long-lasting. Since they are wider and larger, they can be more challenging to use and it may take a little practice to maneuver them correctly. They typically are the fastest to use, making them a great choice for aerating lawns that larger than normal or that need to be done more often.

Aerating your lawn is a vital step in creating a healthy lawn with strong roots. There are different types of lawn aerators to choose from to get the job completed, and which one you choose will depend on the size of your lawn and your budget. Some people choose to have a professional landscaping company aerate the lawn for them since they do not have the proper equipment, but even if you don’t want to buy a lawn aerator, you can rent one for a reasonable fee from a home improvement store and get the job done on your own for a lot less than it would cost to hire someone to aerate the lawn for you.

As a homeowner, you are required (or at least expected) to keep your lawn neat, trim and similar to the other homes in your neighborhood. Unless you are paying someone else to do this, a lawn mower is an essential piece of equipment. That being said, there are many options to consider when choosing a lawn mower. When making this decision, make sure to review and understand your options to best choose a mower to match both your needs and your lifestyle.

Push Mowers

The most common choice is a push mower. As the name suggests, you must physically push this mower. If you are looking for something that requires a little less work, push mowers also come self-propelled, which can make mowing faster and more enjoyable. Another factor to consider when choosing a push mower is whether to buy a gas model or electric. Although gas mowers have been the preference in the past, electric mowers are becoming more popular as they become more powerful and versatile.

Reel Mowers

A reel mower is the ultimate in man-powered lawn care. These machines, which rely on a rotating wheel to clip your grass, require neither gas nor electricity. This eco-friendly option saves you money on utility bills or gas. Another benefit is the more natural, yet refined look resulting from the blades used.

Riding Lawn Mowers

If you have a large space, you will want to consider buying a riding lawn mower. These mowers provide a larger cutting area and allow you to sit while mowing. This makes a riding mower ideal for fields and large lawns, where a push mower would require too much time and energy.

Zero Turn Mowers

A zero turn mower provides you with the speed and power of a riding mower, with added versatility for small spaces. Long the favorite of lawn services, zero turn mowers can turn on a dime and therefore are great for cutting small lawns in very little time.

Finish Mowers

For very large spaces, you will want a finish mower. Because these attach to your tractor, they are able to provide the largest possible cutting area and adapt to the large space you need. Furthermore, finish mowers still give your grass a well-groomed finish.

With all of the choices available, there is sure to be a mower to fit exactly what you need. Weigh your choices and you will be enjoyably grooming your yard in no time.

When you think of carpentry tools, such as hammers, saws, and levels, you most often probably think of doing work around the inside of the house or puttering around a basement or garage workshop. But carpentry tools have a big place in outdoor projects and everyday outdoor maintenance as well, just like garden tools, and are essential tools needed for many exterior do-it-yourself projects.

So, we thought a short carpentry tools list that describes five of the most useful tools from your indoor tool box that will do double-duty as outdoor tools would be worthwhile, so you can put together your own outdoor carpentry tool kit to have available whenever you have a few projects that need to be completed outdoors.

Tape Measure

No matter what type of project you are working on, you will often find yourself in need of a tape measure. This can be used not only for large woodworking projects, but can even be used to gauge how far apart to plant flowers, to determine how large the patio is so that you know whether that outdoor patio furniture you fell in love with at the store will fit, and to measure distances for outside light installation, among many other uses.

Hammer

Whether you are working indoors or out, a hammer is an essential carpentry tool that no homeowner can be without. Whether it’s to tap down wayward nails in the deck or to attach something to the exterior of the house, a hammer always has many uses and belongs in every tool box.

Level

When it comes to carpentry tools, no tool is more essential to ensuring a professional finished project than a level (well, maybe a tape measure will be a close tie). Levels provide you with the ability to make sure your work is level and finished properly. This is important whether you are hanging a set of outdoor lighting sconces on either side of your front door or are preparing the ground to install a patio slab or walkway.

Screwdriver

No homeowner should be without a set of Philips head and flat head screwdrivers for both indoor and outdoor use. Another of the most widely used carpentry tools, screwdrivers are constantly used to assemble furniture, install lighting, tighten up gates, and more. Almost nothing can be put together without the use of a screwdriver.

Saw

There are many different types of saws, and this particular tool can fall into the category of either carpentry hand tools or carpentry power tools, depending on what type of saw we are talking about (all of the other essential carpentry tools on the list are hand tools). From a basic hand saw, used to saw off dead tree branches, to a circular saw to help you build an outdoor wooden bench or other wood construction projects, there are many uses for saws and a number of different types of saws to choose from.

It is not necessary for homeowners to go out and purchase a second set of carpentry tools just to use outside, but if you spend a lot of time working on outdoor projects, it is probably worth the investment to at least get a second set of the most used carpentry tools so that you do not have to constantly run inside every time you need to work on a project or make a minor repair.

When it comes to these types of carpentry tools, prices are usually not that expensive, with the exception of some types of power saws. You should still not skimp on price when buying these tools because you want a high quality tool so that it will last, and you should make sure to not leave your tools outdoors where they can rust. You can find carpentry tools for sale at a wide variety of stores, both brick and mortar stores and online, so you should be able to find some good deals on a second set of tools if you want the convenience of having two separate carpentry tool kits.

Garden tools can be expensive, but it’s really not easy to garden without the proper tools. While you may be tempted to purchase cheap tools, take it from someone who has tried that, you will be money ahead if you purchase quality gardening tools instead. Cheap tools are often frustrating to use and will not last as long as ones that are better quality. The following are five essential garden tools that every gardener should have:

1. Shovel

Whether you are into flower gardening, vegetable gardening or both, a shovel is an indispensable tool. I would sure hate to have to do much digging without a round point shovel. I prefer one with a short handle, although there are long handled ones as well. In addition to the regular round point shovel, I also like to have what is sometimes called a sharp shooter, which has a narrow blade. It’s great for digging planting holes for large perennials.

2. Trowel

For small perennials, I use my trowel, which is another gardening tool I wouldn’t be without. Buy the best trowel you can find. A cheap one will bend the first time you hit a rock or a hard spot in the ground. I like one with a padded handle and there are also several ergonomic models that are supposed to be easier on your hand and wrist.

3. Garden Hand Weeder

Another great garden tool in my arsenal is a garden hand weeder. Little shallow rooted weeds are easily pulled by hand but weeds with long taproots and things like Bermuda grass and Johnson grass require the assistance of my trusty hand weeder.

4. Garden Pruning Shears

You can’t garden without a pair of hand pruners. Whether I’m cutting back shrubs, removing dead branches from plants, deadheading or gathering vegetables in the garden, I use my pruners all the time. As with other tools, buy the best garden pruning shears you can afford. They will make every pruning task much easier.

5. Garden Hose

The last essential on my list is one or more good quality garden hoses. I like the flat kind that don’t kink. They are more expensive, but they save you a good deal of frustration when you don’t have to fight with the hose to get the kinks out.

Once you have your essential gardening tools, you need to take care of them. Clean your tools after each use and wipe down your shovel, trowel, weeder and pruners with oil occasionally. You also need a proper garden tool storage area to keep all of your gardening supplies and tools organized. Then you’ll be ready to handle any gardening tasks whenever they arise.

Looking to buy garden tools? You can find a wide selection of garden tools here.

Are you tired of the piles of garden tools that are strewn around your garage, shed or garden building? Do you find it hard to find what you need when you’re doing some gardening? Then get a few garden tool racks (or even just one!) to organize your tools and you’ll always know where your tools are at a moment’s notice.

Garden tool racks are a great way to keep your tools organized so that you know where everything is and so that your tools stay in good condition. There are many types of garden tool storage racks that you can choose from – some can be hung on the wall of a garage or shed with hooks to hang tools of varying sizes, some can be stood on a table and have spaces to keep different types and sizes of tools, some are cabinets with drawers and shelves, and some are standalone racks with a variety of different areas for storing different types of tools. Some garden tool racks are even portable so you can carry your tools in an organized fashion with you as you move around your yard completing gardening tasks. The type of garden tool rack you choose will depend in part on what type of tools you are looking to store and what type of space you have to store them in.

Garden tool wall racks are a great way to store larger tools, such as shovels, rakes, hoes and spades. The racks have a set of pegs, clips or hooks that can be used to line up your long handled tools on the wall, so they are not left on the ground for someone to trip over. Some of these racks will also have a shelf overhead so you can store other types of tools or gardening supplies that would not be easily stored by hanging them.

Another type of garden tool organizer is one that has a series of different shelves, hooks, pegs and pockets that can be set at various locations along a backing board that is hung on a wall or propped up against a table. This type of storage rack is very versatile because it allows you to store all of your garden tools and supplies in a way that is most convenient for you based on the types of tools you have and which set-up most effectively houses all of the tools. Some of these systems are modular, so you can keep adding on as your garden tool storage needs increase over time.

There are also garden tool organizing racks that can be draped around a large pail or bucket to house your smaller gardening tools so that they stay organized while you tote them around the garden with you. These organizers are usually more like pouches than racks, with a variety of different openings and loops in which you can slip your tools to hold them securely. This is a great way to keep your tools organized on the go.

Garden tool racks can range from a very basic and small strip that is hung on the wall with a few pegs to hold long-handled tools to an elaborate system that includes shelves, pegs, hooks, clips, and more so that every garden tool you own can be stored in one place. Which type of rack you choose will depend on what you want to store and where you will locate the rack. Your budget will also be a factor in your purchasing decision.

You can buy garden tool racks at many home improvement stores, garden centers, tool centers or online retailers. If you search for garden tool racks online, you are sure to find a wide variety of choices and usually also some better prices than you would in most retail stores. Shopping online is a great way to compare prices of garden tool racks and to compare features as well so you find just what you’re looking for at the best possible price.

If you want to keep the outside of your home and your yard looking nice, you need to make sure that you are regularly cleaning your gutter system. Clogged gutters cannot only make your house look bad, but they can contribute to destroying your yard. Gutters are designed to carry rain and melt water off your roof, through the system, down the down spouts, and safely away from your home’s foundation. It is quite common for leaves, small twigs, and other debris to find their way into your gutters and downspouts. If this debris is allowed to accumulate, clogs can occur. As the gutters are clogged, the debris and standing water make the gutters heavy. They can start to pull away from your house and cause an eyesore. In addition, if the water is not carried away from your foundation by the gutter system, the water can run down the side of your home or over the sides of the gutters and cause large puddles next to your house or eat away at your foundation. A flower garden or landscaping next to your house could be ruined.

You want to make sure that you clean your gutters regularly. Conventional wisdom suggests twice a year is necessary, but you could probably get away with one thorough cleaning per year. Schedule a cleaning in the spring and an inspection in the fall. The inspection will tell you if you need a second cleaning for the year. If you decide to do the job yourself, then you will need some gutter cleaning tools. Most important is a sturdy and safe ladder. You need to make sure that the ladder is tall enough so that you can stand a few rungs down and reach your gutters comfortably. You do not want to be reaching over your head to clean your gutters. Scaffolding will also work, but it takes a lot more time to construct it than it does to set a ladder against the house.

The next most important tool for cleaning your gutters is a gutter scoop. This is a large scoop with high sides and a long handle that allows you to scoop out as much debris as possible with each scooping action. Make sure that you measure your gutters before purchasing a gutter scoop because there are several different sizes and you want to make sure that the tool will fit into your gutter system. This piece of gutter cleaning equipment should not cost more than a few dollars.

Other pieces of gutter cleaning equipment include gloves for your hands, trash bags to collect the trash, a garden hose, and possibly a pressure washer or gutter wand. You do not want to be exposed to any of the mold or bacteria that accumulate in gutter debris so it is always a good idea to wear gloves. I personally just tie a garbage bag to the top of the ladder to collect the debris as I go; but some people prefer to throw the trash on the ground from the ladder and go around and pick it up later. Either way, you will need some heavy-duty garbage bags that can handle the weight of wet leaves and gutter grime. Once you get the large pieces of clog out, you will want to run some water through your gutter system with a garden hose to rinse the gutters clean. Some people choose to use power washers or gutter wands, but I think a plain old hose does the trick just fine.

As with all other do-it-yourself projects, if you are not absolutely sure you can do the job safely yourself, then hire a professional service to do it for you. It might cost a little more, but professionals have the experience and equipment necessary to keep them safe.
