Remember when you were a kid and going to the playground was the high point of your day? In elementary school when you lived for recess? We would dash out the door, everyone racing to be the first one to the playsets.

Remember jumping in the swing, pushing higher and higher, feeling the wind in your face and that feeling of freedom as you flew? The joy of those moments are still with me when I close my eyes and imagine myself there again, feeling like a bird soaring through the air.

I remember there was always a line-up for the slides at recess. You felt that little thrill of fear as you climbed the ladder and approached the top. Then you would sit at the top, wait for the perfect moment, and push off. Just like the swings, for a moment you felt like you were flying. If you were a real dare-devil, you would go down the slide head first, scaring the teachers and getting into trouble. It was so much fun, though, that you would do it again next time.

These days, I’m too old for slides and swings, but I live vicariously through my nieces and nephews. They don’t have to wait for a day at the park or recess at school, though. They have a beautiful playset in their back yard. Kids just don’t know how good they have it these days. I love to sit and watch them play the way I used to. There’s such joy and life in their faces as they climb ladders, slide down slides, and swing higher and higher and higher.

Their playset is huge, with a covered deck, a climbing wall, and rope ladders in addition to the swings, slide and monkey bars. They’ve been playing on it since they were tots, and still love it now that they’re school age. Watching them play with all the abandon that only children can have makes me want to be a child again.
