Styles of Driveway Lights

Contributed By: BAG Editors

Adding driveway lights to your home serves a number of purposes.  From elegant ambience to safety and security, driveway lighting not only lights up the way but adds interest to your exterior décor.  When it comes to selecting lights, you have a number of options to choose from, so finding just the right type of lighting should be a breeze.

If you are interested in installing driveway lights but are not sure what style or type you would like, here are a few choices to consider:

Driveway light styles:

driveway lightsDriveway post lights – A set of driveway post lights can delineate the path down the driveway while creating loads of outdoor style.  The post lights can be set at any intervals you like or you can install just a single driveway post light, and the lights can range in style from classic to contemporary, depending on the type of post and light fixture you choose.  Some driveway light posts have a lantern or globe style light that sits on top of the post, while in others the illumination comes from within the post itself.

Driveway marker lights – Adding a set of marker lights down the driveway can add safety to your driveway.  Like post lights, most driveway marker lighting kits contain a set of short posts that contain lights at the top of the posts or within the posts themselves, although driveway marker lighting can also be placed directly in the ground.  Some models of marker lights also have options to flash on and off in order to make it easier to judge where the edges of the driveway are as you’re driving along.  These are a great option if you get a lot of snow or just want to make it easier to delineate the edges of your driveway.

Driveway paver lights – One way to really add ambience to your driveway and front yard is with driveway paver lights.  These lights are set into a driveway constructed of brick or stone pavers, and in place of some of the regular pavers a light is put in place in the same size and shape as the other pavers.  When the lights are turned on, these lights really add beauty and elegance to your home as they illuminate your driveway from within the paver design.

Recessed driveway lights – Lighting can be recessed within the driveway itself or along the edges of the driveway to light up the way without the lights standing out.  Recessed driveway lighting can be installed directly into the driveway itself (as is the case with driveway paver lighting) or you can install a set of spotlights or floodlights along the edges of the driveway within the grass or beds that line the driveway.

Driveway Lighting Options:

LED driveway lights – LED driveway lighting is among the most popular type of lighting because LED lights offer a bright light that does not consume a great deal of energy, and the bulbs also last a long time before needing replacement.    You can choose from solar powered LED lights or ones powered by electricity.  These lights come in many different styles.

Low voltage driveway lights – Low voltage lights are easy to install and don’t require the expertise of an electrician.  You can find low voltage driveway lighting sets that come complete with everything you need to get the lights set up in no time.

There are many styles and types of driveway lights to choose from.  Which ones you select will depend on the style of your home (classic, contemporary, etc), the purpose for adding lights (ambience or safety), the type of power you are interested in using (solar, electric, low voltage), how many lights you need (single light post, multiple paver lights, set of marker lights), and your budget.

You can find driveway lights for sale at most stores that sell outdoor lighting and a great place to find many styles and options is to search for driveway lights online.  There are many online retailers that offer multiple options and styles and by doing your shopping online, it also makes it easy to compare driveway light prices so you get the best deal for your money.
