Vinyl patio covers, on the other hand, are made out of polyvinyl chloride or PVC. They also simulate the look of real wood or metal, but with far less maintenance requirements. They come in pre-cut sizes for easy installation. These options can be more costly relative to the other options, but they will require far less maintenance than material choices like wood.

There are many options to consider if you are interested in building an enclosed patio, ranging from permanent to temporary enclosed patio solutions, so make sure to weigh each option to select which will best meet your needs, as well as your budget.

A hammock is basically just a netting of fabric or rope that is strung together and is then hung between two support structures, such as a pair of trees or a hammock stand.  The pocket it creates is perfect for laying on or sitting in and provides a casual and relaxing piece of outdoor patio furniture.    A single hammock is intended for one person to enjoy, while a double hammock offers additional room for one, or a space to share.

There are three main activities to enjoy while on a hammock: swinging, resting, and sleeping.  As one lies in a double hammock, they have the option of swinging in the breeze, gently swaying in the wind and admiring the garden decor, or remaining rather stationary to rest or sleep.  Although the very first hammocks were created by natives that live in tropical rain forest areas as beds to sleep in, they are now mainly associated with relaxation in the summer sun (although they’ve been known to be the perfect place to take a quiet snooze!).

Double hammocks are aptly named because they are wider than a regular hammock and can fit two people in them at one time.  That means that you and your spouse can get away from everything for a little and just unwind together, or the kids can have some swinging time together without having to fight over who gets the hammock first.

If you decide that you would like to experience the tranquility that a hammock can offer and you want to go out and buy one, then there are many options that you can choose from.  The first decision you need to make is whether you want a double rope hammock or a double parachute hammock.  Double parachute hammocks are made of fabric rather than rope, which is stretched out between two end supports.  Double rope hammocks are made from intertwined rope that is woven to allow you to lay or sit on it without falling through.  Both kinds offer a comfortable place to relax, but will provide a bit of a different look and feel, so you just need to choose which one you prefer.

Obviously, like everything else, there are different double hammock prices, that depend mostly on style and quality.  More expensive hammocks are usually made to be placed permanently in one location and are made of durable materials that will not fade or get ruined with use and weather abuse.  Some less expensive double hammocks are lighter in weight, and although they may not be as durable, they are easier to set up and take down, but they may only last a season or two.  Double hammock stands will usually cost as much or more than the double hammock itself (usually around $100 – $200), so factor that into your budget if you are not hanging your hammock from some trees.

There are also double travel hammocks, which are intended to be fully lightweight and portable so that you can bring them along wherever you go.  These cheap double hammocks are not usually the best quality, but if you are constantly on the move, they may be the right choice for you because they are very versatile.  There are also double hammock chairs, which have the same basic look and feel of a more traditional double hammock, but are made to hold two people sitting more upright, rather than laying down.

A trampoline is basically a taut piece of fabric that is very strong and can hold the weight of the jumpers.  That piece of fabric is then connected to a metal frame by many small metal springs.  Due to the fabric being taut, the springs make the fabric act like elastic when it is jumped on.  The tension of the fabric then launches the jumper into the air repeatedly each time the jumper lands on the fabric.

A trampoline enclosure is basically netting that is placed around the whole trampoline, reaching high enough up that it prevents jumpers from easily falling off the sides.  It does not matter what shape trampoline you have because there should be enclosures made to fit any shape or size trampoline.    If the particular 12ft trampoline model you are considering does not come standard with a safety enclosure, you can usually buy a 12ft trampoline enclosure separately and as long as it is made to fit the same shape as you have, it should be able to be attached to the trampoline you buy.  If at all possible though, it is best to try to buy a 12ft trampoline and enclosure together, to better guarantee that the enclosure will fit properly and that jumpers will remain as safe as possible.

Buying a trampoline is a great decision because kids of all ages can have so much fun on it and trampolines are a great form of exercise.  If you have the room, 12ft trampolines are the way to go, since they provide ample tumbling space and can accommodate multiple people at the same time, without being overly large and taking up too much room.  But if you don’t have the room, you can still get enjoyment out of a 10ft or 8ft trampoline.  No matter what type of trampoline you decide to buy, however, consider safety first.   That is why you should also consider a 12ft trampoline enclosure if the model you buy doesn’t already come with one, as well as some safety mats to place on the ground along the edges of the trampoline.  This will ensure that in addition to enjoyment and good exercise, everyone stays safe.

A guttering system includes the trough-like attachments found on the edge of a home’s roof that are designed to collect and direct water away from the vital sections of the house. It is ordinarily constructed from galvanized or cast iron, plastic or vinyl, copper, aluminum, metal or wood. Plastic gutters are recognized as some of the most widely used in homes due to their relatively low cost, low maintenance requirements and durability.

Second, plastic gutters are comparatively more affordable than copper and cast iron or steel, or even aluminum.   This cost difference can really add up when you are guttering your whole house.

Another great advantage of using a plastic rain gutter is its uncomplicated upkeep. Unlike gutters made out of metal or alloys, they are not subject to rust or oxidation. If not appropriately cared for, the most common setback encountered in the use of plastic gutters are cracks or breaks caused by extreme environments. This can easily be solved with the application of a sealant or glue.   Use of plastic gutters may not be a wise choice in locations prone to extreme temperature fluctuations, however.

Plastic rain gutters are composed of several basic components, including the gutter sections, downspouts, splash blocks and elbows. The gutter section is a sloped piece of tube or canal that directs water from the edge of the roof to the downspouts in order to drain. The downspout or down pipe is the vertical section of the gutter where water flows to a drain or splash block and then runs off away from the house. The splash block, also known as the downspout extension, is located at the end of the downspout and keeps water from pooling near the foundation. Lastly, the elbow is a curved or angled gutter piece used to join sections at corners or bends.

If you are installing plastic gutters yourself, you can either buy all of the pieces separately, or you can buy them as a kit, which is easier.  Once you have purchased a plastic gutter kit, you’ll then have to assemble all of the components together and attach them to the edges of your roof and sides of your home.

Before you do this, make sure that you have the proper tools and gear ready. Basic tools you will need to install your plastic gutters include the following:

Once installed, plastic gutters can typically endure up to 10 years or more, or even for the life of your house, if properly cared for. But this requires regular care and maintenance that is frequently overlooked because of the time and effort it takes. Fortunately plastic rain gutters entail lower maintenance to keep them working properly than other gutter types.

Just follow a few simple tips to keep your new plastic gutters working optimally. First, clean your gutters twice a year, ideally during spring or fall. Regular gutter cleaning is important, no matter what type of gutters you have.  Second, check for sagging, water pooling under gutters, flooding or leaks, damages on paint siding,trim or house shutters (which would indicate that water is running down the side of the house) and clogged downspouts.  Since you are using plastic or vinyl gutters, you shouldn’t have a problem with rust, but if you are using metal screws or attachments, you may have to check for rust there. Third, remove any loose debris using a hose or if necessary a plumber’s snake. If it the debris becomes unmanageable, you might want to consider installing a screen or plastic gutter guards.  If you continually find that your gutters are becoming a home for local birds to nest in, you may want to install some plastic bird spikes right along the edge of the gutters to keep birds out and stop their nests from blocking the flow of water in your gutters.

Always make sure that you have the right tools and gear during the maintenance of your plastic gutters. You will need a ladder, gloves, a garbage can or heavy-duty trash bag, a garden hose, safety glasses and a garden trowel for your gutter cleaning tasks. Make sure to secure your ladder on an even surface and keep it securely against the roof. As an added precaution, always try to work with a partner.

Patio paving can be one of the most expensive items in your landscaping budget, so it is wise to consider carefully and prepare well before starting any patio paving design and installation project.

First think about the location and purpose of the area you want to pave. Will it be a small patio made to  house just a few chairs, a large expanse that will include an outdoor kitchen along with some outdoor dining furniture, a patio surrounding an inground pool area or a meandering garden path? This will help identify the type of patio pavers you should use. Natural stones, for example, are not ideal for compression sensitive areas or those areas that get tremendous amounts of wear and tear. Patio paving stones, on the other hand, can be made from most kinds of stone – cast, natural or reconstituted – and are ideal for almost all applications and are more durable.

A natural patio paving stone is quarried and can be scaled into various sizes and shapes for different pattern layouts. Sandstone, slate, granite and limestone are some of the most common of the natural patio paving materials used. Cast patio pavers are made of concrete, clay or reconstituted stone. Reconstituted stones are a mixture of concrete and stones and are less expensive than natural stones. They are easy to install and are less prone to cracking, but they offer a bit less creativity and natural design.  There are other patio paving materials as well, such as brick, concrete blocks, stamped concrete, and patio paving slabs, to choose from as well.

Making sure that the materials you choose blend well with the other design elements in your backyard or garden is very important.  Cost is another consideration in the selection of materials for patio paving. For garden patio paving, gravel is an inexpensive option but needs considerable weed maintenance, sometimes even requiring a regular weed control service to keep things looking good. Concrete requires some skill and special equipment for proper installation but can still be cheaper than natural stone, and if you opt for stamped concrete, it can offer the same basic look. Patio paving slabs can be more economical than individual stones, bricks or blocks.  Brick, tile, granite and other natural stones are very decorative, but are more expensive patio paving options.  Block paving is another pricey option but gives  you lots of versatility in design.

After choosing the best patio paving material, draw up a plan for what you want your finished patio to look like. This will save you time, money and effort. Your plan will help determine the sizing of the finished space, the pattern of the materials, the amount of materials needed and any patio paving equipment required to properly complete the job.

Once you’ve decided on your patio design and materials, you then need to decide whether you will do the installation yourself or will hire a professional.  If you are hiring a patio paving contractor, make sure to only hire accredited contractors. You should get at least 3 quotes to price out the job and should ask for references. Once you have completed your patio, you then have to consider some regular maintenance of it to keep it looking its best.  What you need to do will depend on what type of patio paving material you have chosen.  If you opted for individual patio pavers or bricks, you may have to continuously keep up with weed growth between the cracks.  Some patio paving materials require sealers to keep the patio looking its best.  Some paving choices require virtually no maintenance at all other than an occasional cleaning.

No matter what materials you choose, you will need to keep your paved patio clean.  This typically requires just a spray of the garden hose.  Most patio paving materials cannot withstand the force of a high powered pressure washer, so take care in using them or don’t use them at all.  Some paving materials can use a periodic scrubbing with a mild soap to remove stains, dirt or mildew.

To begin with, if you haven’t purchased your rocking chair yet, choose an appropriate material for your outdoor rocking chair such as teak, cedar, redwood or cherry.  These types of materials will help your wooden rocking chair stand up to the elements for years and will reduce the amount of time you spend maintaining it.

If you’re like many people, it’s the time of year when you start digging out the outdoor patio furniture in preparation for the summer bbq’s, parties and gatherings.  If you are one of those folks that need to get your wooden rocking chairs out of storage and get them fixed up so you can relax and enjoy on a summer Saturday afternoon enjoying your backyard and garden, read on for some useful tips on how to get that done.

Mold is your outdoor wooden rocking chair’s enemy and this is one of the first things you should look for prior to sprucing up your chair.  If you live in an area with high humidity and moisture, check your chair carefully.  To help prevent mold from forming in the first place, spray a solution of vinegar and water over the chair in areas where mold may form, and especially on the undersides of the chair.  Let the chair dry completely in the sun before stowing it away.

Chances are that you will need to clean up your rocking chair and apply some sort of finish to revitalize it before using it again this season.  Here are some tips for preparing and finishing your chair properly:

• Use a coarse grade sand paper to smooth out rough spots or remove any peeling paint.
• After sanding, clean furniture by either power washing it if it’s extremely dirty (but be careful if it’s a painted surface since this could peel off the paint), or brushing with a bit of soap and water (which will usually get the majority of dirt and grime off).  Use a quality wood cleaner that you can find at your local hardware store, such as Murphy’s oil soap, if you don’t want to use soap and water.
• Let furniture dry completely after washing.
• Make sure furniture is clean and dry prior to applying any type of paint or stain.  Oil based stains or paints work best for outdoor rocking chairs.
• Finally, use a sealer so your chair will last much longer – look for one that provides water repellent properties.

Give your wooden chair a good inspection to find any areas that may have become loose such as spindles or joints that may require repair or just re-gluing.  Wood putty can be used to fill in any damaged areas.

You should also keep your wood furniture out of the rain as much as possible, even though many of the woods used in outdoor chairs are very good at weathering the elements.  Use outdoor furniture covers or store under a patio cover to prolong the life of your wooden rocking chair.  Store the chairs inside during winter months if possible, or in a garage or shed, making sure your rocking chair is clean and dry prior to storage to avoid mold.

Remember the better you care for your outdoor furniture, including wicker rockers and wooden rocking chairs in particular, the more seasons and years of enjoyment you will spend rocking and relaxing in comfort.  Maybe you will even decide to pass your rocking chair down to the next generation since the loving care you’ve given it over the years will make it a wonderful family heirloom.

Neem oil is a completely natural bi-product of the Indian neem tree.  The tree is grown widely around the world to provide this useful insecticidal oil.  Rather than destroying pests immediately but wearing off quickly, neem oil provides a longer-term method of garden pest control.

How does neem oil insecticide work to prevent pests from eating your plants?

1. By preventing any insect that has digested neem oil from molting, pests die as immature juveniles and are unable to breed.  This reduces the number of future insect generations.
2. Since only those insects that eat your plants and so consume neem oil are affected, it helps protect the beneficial bugs in your garden.

Using neem oil is an extremely easy, cheap and effective form of garden pest control, but it won’t immediately destroy all insects.  You do need to be a little bit patient and wait for those bugs to digest the oil themselves.  Of course, if you sprayed the oil directly onto insects it would kill them, but it would kill beneficial insects in this way, too.  So it is best to spray either early or late in the day when insects are least active.  Also, doing this prevents you from scorching the leaves of your prized plants when the sun hits that liquid and heats it up.

The most economical way to use neem oil as an insecticide is buy purchasing pure neem oil in a gallon or quart bottle.  Then dilute it, using four teaspoons of oil to every gallon of water.  Add in a spoonful of liquid soap or mild dish-washing detergent and it will work even better.  Then, once you have made your neem oil insecticide solution, you can simply spray it on your plants and wait for those pesky little pests to ingest it and die.
