Do I Need Outdoor Chandeliers Or Outdoor Sconces?

Contributed By: BAG Editors

A lot of times people have a hard time choosing between outdoor chandeliers and outdoor wall sconces when they need to add outdoor lighting to certain areas around the outside of their home.  The reason that this happens, for the most part, is because they don’t have enough information about the two outside lighting types in order to help them make an informative decision.  In this article, we are going to try and change that by providing information on both the outdoor chandelier and the outdoor sconce, and which lighting type goes best where.

outdoor chandelierFirst we are going to start by talking about the outdoor chandelier.  This type of lighting fixture is ideal for outdoor patios with covers, sunrooms, enclosed deck sitting areas, covered porches and gazebos.  The reason that the chandelier is ideal for these places is because the chandelier by nature is amazing at “spotlighting” an area or providing abundant light to one area and it also makes a great focal point.  If you are looking to only light one central area, such as the interior of a gazebo for example, then this is the choice for you.

On the other hand, if you are looking to light up the pathway to the gazebo, then you are better off choosing outdoor sconces.  These light fixtures are great additions if you are looking to add accent or indirect lighting to your walk ways, path ways, gardens, and entry ways.  The indirect lighting that the outdoor wall sconces provide is amazing at setting a relaxed romantic mood while at the same time maintaining its functionality as a light fixture.  If you are going to be using sconces for entry ways, make sure to either put a sconce on each side of the door or one on the side of the door that contains the door lock.  The reason for this is to make it easier to see the door lock at night when you are trying to gain entry to your house.  If you are putting sconces along walk ways or path ways, make sure that they are giving off enough light to highlight some of the hazards of the path such as steps and stones in the way.

outdoor sconceSo the primary difference between outdoor chandeliers and outdoor sconces is that while both offer a decorative touch along with providing a functional use, outdoor chandeliers work best as a central focal point in the center of an outdoor room or covered area and outdoor sconces are better used as more subtle lighting along the edges of walls.  Hopefully after reading this article, you have found some great information about outdoor chandeliers and outdoor wall sconce lights and will be able to decide which type of outdoor light fixture is the right one for you, depending on your lighting needs.
