Patio Umbrella Stand Sizing, Weight and Materials

Contributed By: BAG Editors

If you have decided to purchase a patio umbrella for your patio, deck or other outdoor space, then you will also need an umbrella stand as well.  Some patio umbrellas come with the stand and in other cases you must purchase the patio umbrella stand separately.  While it is easier when the umbrella stand comes along with the umbrella, one benefit to purchasing it separately is that you can choose from among a variety of patio umbrella stands available to find a style, color and material that best suits your outdoor lawn and garden décor.

One of the most important considerations when selecting an outdoor umbrella stand is determining the proper sizing of the stand.  If umbrella stands are not sized properly, there is a possibility that the umbrella stand will not be able to adequately support the patio umbrella, which can be a potential danger or can cause the umbrella to break.

Here’s what you need to know when it comes to umbrella stand sizing:

  • 35 lb umbrella stand or lighter –  These stands can be used with a small umbrella of no more than 7 to 7 ½ feet in diameter that is secured through a hole in a table.  This is the size of umbrella stand typically used with bistro table sets.  This type of umbrella stand base should not be used with a freestanding umbrella due to the danger of the umbrella tipping over.
  • Patio umbrella stand 40 – 55 lb umbrella stand – Umbrella base stands in this weight range offer more support and security than lighter weight models but should still not be used for freestanding patio umbrellas.  These stands can comfortably support umbrellas between 7 ½ – 9 feet wide that are secured through a hole in your outdoor dining furniture (table).  They are not recommended for use in areas that are very windy since they are still relatively lightweight when it comes to outdoor umbrella stands.
  • 60 – 75 lb umbrella stand – An umbrella stand in this weight range can be used with wider umbrellas (up to about 11 feet), such as the ones typically found on larger patio tables.  If the umbrella is secured through the table, the umbrella stand base can support an 11 foot umbrella, but if the umbrella is freestanding, the diameter should not exceed 9 feet.  Care should be taken if using the stand to support a freestanding umbrella in an area prone to wind.
  • 100 lb umbrella stand (or more) – A heavy or large umbrella stand such as this can support just about any type of umbrella in most weather conditions.  The umbrella stand is typically used for freestanding umbrellas, rather than those that are secured through outdoor dining furniture and can support even 11 foot wide patio umbrellas.

Patio umbrella standThere are many types of materials to choose from when it comes to selecting an umbrella stand.  The type of material you choose will depend on your outdoor décor and the style of your outdoor furniture and patio umbrella.  The material won’t necessarily affect the weight of the stand, since almost any material can be weighted down, depending on the size.

Patio umbrella stands are available in resin, aluminum, metal, steel, fiberglass, concrete, cast iron, and plastic.  You can find anything from an antique umbrella stand made from intricately detailed cast iron or stamped aluminum that adds that extra special touch to your décor to a modern umbrella stand made from metal or resin to suit your style.

Patio umbrella stand One thing to keep in mind is that it’s not usually a good idea to purchase cheap umbrella stands, since getting one that is weighted enough to support your umbrella is imperative to the safety of both the umbrella itself and any people that may be in the vicinity of the umbrella should it fall or blow over.  Of course, there are various price ranges even within the proper weight category, but if you need to save money, skimp on style before you skimp on the weight of the umbrella stand.
