A gardener is, in a some ways, like an athlete. Like sports, gardening often requires the mergence of the spirit, mind and body to make progress, to perform and to succeed. Just like hitting a homerun in baseball, throwing a winning touchdown pass or playing scratch golf, gardening is not the easiest of tasks. However, when an amazing garden does blossom from the intellectual use of our hands, it is as amazing as a defining moment in sports.

Many of us might have felt that we wanted to play sports at a higher level but simply did not have the time and energy to devote to such an endeavor. For outdoor lovers and plant enthusiasts, gardening might also feel like an arduous undertaking, given all the time constraints life places on us. However, if you plan your planting carefully, a beautiful low-maintenance garden can flourish right before your eyes.

With a little thought and a lot of care you can be enjoying your new garden from the delight of your classic porch swing before you know it. Let’s take a look at seven steps that will help this gardening dream become a reality.

1. No Seeds Or Leads For Weeds

Any low maintenance garden will be as weed free as possible. The way to accomplish a non-intruded garden is to make sure there are no weeds from the start. Removing all weeds and seeds from your soil pre-planting can help assure that there will be no surprises or unwanted strangers sprouting up. Another key is to make sure weeding issues do not grow unmanageable. Destroy weeds at the root of their existence and do not let them get out of hand when you do find them, and you should have a much more stress free gardening experience.

2. Make Sure Your Garden Paths Have Purpose

Attending to and viewing the flowers and plants you have nestled into the ground can at times be challenging due to size, shape and other needs in your garden. A design idea to make you gardening life much easier is to plan pathways and stone walkways in such a manner that allows access to all of your perennials, annuals and biennials. The more robust and intuitive the segmenting of your garden is, the less time you will waste navigating difficult terrain or conquering hard to reach obstacles. As an added perk, a well laid out garden makes a visitor’s time much more delightful as well.

3. Put Your High-Maintenance Plants In Carefully Selected Locations

It is essential to be aware of what plants will be more finicky and to plan accordingly. The more difficult a plant is to tend to, or the more susceptible it is to disease or disaster, the greater the need for strategic position within your garden. Fruits, flowers, vegetables and other shrubbery with known issues should always be located in areas that facilitate their needs and makes them highly serviceable.

4. Lawn Logistics – Let There Be A Layout

If a lawn is incorporated into your gardening environment, very close attention should be paid to its shape and size. When plotting the dimensions of your lawn, make sure it is conducive to maintenance and is easy to mow. It is also wise to build structured edges around your lawn to discourage wild growth and to make edging simpler. Implementing a bordered and properly formed lawn can go a long way towards happier gardening.

5. Excitement For Pots Should Not Be Contained

The beauty of a garden is that it can be interpreted in many different ways and it all does not have to be embedded in the ground or dug into the soil. Planting pots, ornamental containers and overhead planting hangers are all ways to add a little flair to your garden while still minimizing the upkeep. In case of drastic weather, pots and containers are also great ways to transport precious garden members indoors and away from harm.

6. Strong Chants For Strong Plants

There are many theories and gardening techniques, and one such movement is xeriscaping. This is where gardeners make a conscious effort to plant species that rely on very little water and nutrients to exist. If you purchase native plants that are environmentally friendly and are accustomed to specific climate conditions that represent your living conditions, you will be rewarded with a more hassle free yard. Bushes and flowers that have low watering needs include butterfly bush, boxwood, California poppies, Dahlberg daisies and petunias. Even the addition of a rock garden or rock formations is a great way to show your dedication to a lower maintenance and environmentally friendly garden, and it will even be easier on your wallet as well. Using plants and systems that demand very little water are great time and resource savers, and they can be the ideal solution for the busy, distracted or environmentally aware gardener.

7. The Gym Is Not The Only Place To Trim

Since plants are living organisms just like us, they constantly need grooming. Making sure your garden is properly trimmed is a key piece to the puzzle that is low maintenance gardening. Assuring that your plants have all of the appropriate nutrients and are cut to a size that induces vibrant and healthy growth will make your gardening experience that much more enjoyable and easier to manage. Feeding your plants nutrients and water in a timely manner will also help keep them in top shape. Planning and implementing a drip irrigation or soaker hose system and a sensibly scheduled trimming pattern can do wonders for your gardening frame of mind and overall gardening sanity.

Summations And Additions

Above all else, planning and research are the vital elements to the proprietorship of a prolific garden. Intelligent planning, including the seven steps above, and a solid well rounded gardening knowledge base will ultimately provide you with the tools necessary to produce a colorful and fruitful piece of land you can be proud of. Below are a few additional notes to further help with the planning and research.

Devote a sketchbook to your garden. Map and draw out the lawn, walking and access paths, irrigation networks and pot and container decor. You can use different color pencils for your work to define distinct garden characteristics for clarity and ease of reference.

Keep a journal and log all of your gardening findings and ideas. Keep track of what works and inspires in both written and drawn form.

Do not hesitate to read an article or search the internet for gardening information. If available, consult an expert at the local nursery. You should also befriend other garden enthusiasts as well. The more support you have, the better.

Keep the environment and yourself in mind when planning. Gardening is meant to be fun. Think about what will make you most happy and try to merge that with a low maintenance, environmentally centered approach.

If you have taken garden planning seriously, and you stick to the advice given above, you will be headed in the right direction towards a peaceful and beautiful planting experience. By deploying certain sets of gardening principles, techniques and tactics like the ones given above, the entire gardening experience becomes more enjoyable and less burdensome. When it comes to gardening, it is best to take your time and plan ahead, as this may very well save you lots of trouble and heartache in the future.

Are you tired of seeing the same old garden pots used in every single garden in your neighborhood? Well, if so, you are not alone. After all, who wants to be just like everybody else and have the same thing as the people next door in their front yard, backyard or garden? If you are looking for something a little different that can set your yard apart, then it’s time to turn your attention to using some alternative garden pots for your garden.

What exactly is an alternative garden pot? It is not a new product fad on the market – garden pot alternatives can be almost any type of object that is sturdy enough to hold some soil and a few flowers or plants, and that looks good doing the job. Now, all you really need to do is to think outside of the box, use a bit of your imagination, and be as creative as you can. In fact, you need not even purchase anything, because the things that you have at home could very well become a great alternative for the common garden pot.

Here are a few ideas that you may want to consider using as alternatives to garden pots in order to help you get started:

Paint Cans – Most people have old paint cans in their garages that are simply taking up space and gathering dust. So why not make them useful and turn them into a garden pot or two? First off, you have to clean them very well. If there are any dried up paint residues inside the can, make sure that you scrape those off. Once it’s all nice and clean, you have to punch several holes at the bottom and sides of the can. This should let the excess water out whenever you’re watering the plants. And voila! You now have alternative garden pots that didn’t even cost you a dime. If you like the look of paint cans holding your flowers (and they do look cute!), but are concerned about any residue paint left over in the ones you have in your garage, you can purchase a few inexpensive empty paint cans at the home improvement store and either leave them as-is, or dress up the exterior of the can to add a bit more interest to your new garden pot alternative.

Old Wooden Boxes – Have you got a few old wood boxes lying around? Well, if you do, then it’s time to put them to good use. All you really need to do is clean them up, check if they’re still sturdy enough to hold in the soil and you’re good to go. If there are no openings on the bottom of the box, you’ll also have to drill a few holes in them for water drainage. You can paint, stain or seal the wood to give it a nicer look and to protect the wood a bit, but you can also opt to keep the boxes in their natural wooden state.

Wheelbarrows - An old wheelbarrow can make a great garden planter if you’re no longer using it to lug items around the yard. Again, all it needs is a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom and you can fill the space with soil and a few flowers or even make a whole herb garden.

Needless to say, when it comes to finding alternative garden pots, all you really need is do is put your imagination to work. Almost any object that can hold some soil and can have a few drainage holes drilled into the bottom can work as a place to grow some plants, flowers, or herbs. In fact, designing your own garden pot can become a fun project for the whole family to enjoy, so do consider getting everyone’s input.

A wildlife-friendly garden is something that many people try to achieve, and there are many ways that you can accomplish this. You can plant a variety of plants, create a pond, and even make a compost heap. However, one of the most easy and straightforward ways is to buy a bird box or two.

The main problem that people have is deciding what type of bird they want to attract into their garden and what type of bird box they need to buy. There are some very basic bird boxes that can be purchased that will attract many common British birds, such as the blue tit, robin and sparrow. However, if you are trying to encourage a particular type of bird, you should understand their needs. Here are a few ideas…

Sparrows - Although the sparrow is a very common bird, many people don’t realize that they nest in groups. They don’t like to nest on their own and would prefer safety in numbers. This is why specialist sparrow boxes will have different compartments. If you already have some basic bird boxes that you have bought, then just place them next to each other instead.

Blackbirds – The blackbird has one of the most beautiful songs of all the bird kingdom. So, it’s no wonder that people want to attract them to their gardens. The blackbird boxes on the market are bigger than the regular ones and are open at the front. However, please be aware than many types of birds will find this kind of box attractive, so you might not be successful in attracting blackbirds.

Swallows - Swallows are quite different from most species of bird in that their nesting box isn’t really a box at all. Instead, it’s more of a cup that you attach under the inside eaves of a building, such as a garage or barn.

Another consideration for those wanting to buy bird boxes for their garden is where to locate them. This is very important because you don’t want cats or other animals getting in and attacking the birds. So, you should make sure to locate your bird boxes in an area that allows them to be enjoyed by the birds, rather than any other wildlife.

There are a number of ways to attract interesting wildlife to your yard, but buying a few bird boxes and situating them around your garden is a sure fire way to bring some colorful and melodic birds into your nest.

There is quite a trend these days in creating wonderful outdoor living spaces which are just as beautiful as a well designed interior. Outdoor rugs have become more and more popular as a result, because they help to create that feeling of a room in the garden.

If you have seen the pictures in interior design magazines, however, you might have been aghast at the kind of prices charged for these rugs, especially considering that the rug will be out in all types of weather. However, it is precisely for that reason that they may be a little more expensive than rugs you might only use indoors. Outdoor rugs have to be resistant to mold and mildew and not be compromised when they get wet. They have to sit out all day in the sun without their beautiful colors fading. And they have to withstand the extra wear and tear that comes from being outside. Any old rug will not do unless you don’t mind throwing away your rug every few months and buying a new one!

However, if you cannot find a cheap outdoor rug, you can at least find them for less than the prices quoted in the interior magazines if you do a little research. Here are a few places where you can find outdoor rugs for less.

1. End of Season Sales

If you go to the garden center (or department store with a garden department) at the end of the summer season, you will often find outdoor rugs with a reduced price. You may end up storing your rug over winter but you will be pleased you did next spring when you roll out your bargain rug on your patio.

2. Auction Sites

You can always get a good deal on outdoor rugs on auction sites like eBay where many sellers compete with each other for your business. You can either buy using the auction method or look for rugs at a fixed priced (so called “Buy it Now” offers).

3. E-commerce Sites

There are many ordinary e-commerce sites around which also offer keen prices and because you can browse a lot of websites in very little time, you can do a lot of shopping around to get the best deal on the particular rugs you like. By shopping online, not only will you get better prices, but you will also have many more rugs to choose from than the restricted range found in magazines or in your local stores.

Buy outdoor rugs here.

When it comes to versatility and functionality, there is almost nothing more suitable for multiple purposes than a wooden bench. Wooden benches can be placed indoors or out and can be used for seating or storage, as a work surface, or simply as an attractive addition to any décor. A wooden bench has many uses and can either be purchased in a variety of styles or can easily be built by those interested in a fairly basic do-it-yourself construction project.

Of course, you can find plenty of uses for an indoor wooden bench, but for the purposes of this article, we will be referring to the many options in which you can use an outdoor wooden bench. The main difference between indoor and outdoor wooden benches is in the type of wood that is used and how they are finished. Benches for outdoor use need to be protected from the weather so that they will hold up against the effects of moisture and the sun. This is easily done with a sealer or protective coating. Other than that, there are not huge differences between how wooden benches are constructed for indoor or outdoor use.

Here are a few different ways you can utilize a wooden bench in your backyard or garden:

Wooden garden bench – Wooden garden benches are a popular addition to many garden spaces. This is because they provide a place to sit and enjoy the garden while blending in nicely with the décor due to their natural wood design. Wooden garden bench designs vary widely, from a bench made from natural twigs and sticks that is purely designed to create a rustic and natural feel in the garden to a wooden park bench that evokes a more traditional feel and can add interest to the garden while creating a functional space to sit and enjoy the view. Wooden garden benches can have high backs or no backs, can include planters on either side of the bench to house additional flowers or plants, and can be left in their natural state, painted or stained. While a rustic wooden bench may be at home amongst a bed of wildflowers, a white wooden bench may brighten up a more formal garden space. Each type of wooden bench can evoke a completely different feel within the garden.

Wooden storage bench – Wooden storage benches not only provide a place to sit, but also offer added functionality because they provide outdoor storage space as well. A wooden storage bench can be used just about anywhere you would place any other type of bench or seating – on a deck or patio, in the garden, near a pool, near the entrance to a house, in a play area or anywhere else that you can benefit from seating and storage. A wooden bench with storage offers the ultimate in functionality and does not compromise design. Like a wooden garden bench, a storage bench can vary in design as to whether it contains a back or has arms, how it is finished (stain, paint, left natural, etc.), and more. The only difference is that the wooden bench seat will have some type of hinge that can be opened up so that items can be stored inside and the area of the bench providing storage should keep the elements out so the items inside are protected. Even a wooden toy bench can be used outdoors to house the kids’ playthings, as long as it is treated to withstand the elements.

Wooden deck bench – When designing a deck, many homeowners request that a wooden deck bench be incorporated into the deck design. Wooden deck benches can be built right into the deck during the construction process, or you can purchase or build a freestanding wooden deck bench to use for seating or storage on the deck. Often the benches that are built directly into the deck are wooden bench seats that are situated along the edge or railing of a deck and do not contain their own backs. If you are adding a deck bench after the fact, there are enough wooden bench designs available commercially to compliment most deck designs, or you can have a contractor build a wooden deck bench that works well with your deck. If you know how to build a wooden bench, you can even easily build one yourself, or you can check out some wooden bench plans online to find out how to make a wooden bench that would match your existing deck. No matter what you choose to do, incorporating a wooden deck bench into your deck design plans or adding one to an existing deck provides added functionality, seating space, and even storage if you build it as a storage bench.

Wooden shower bench – For those homeowners that have outdoor showers, a wooden shower bench is a great addition. Wooden shower benches are typically constructed from teak or cedar and are sealed for protection due to their continual exposure to moisture. Wooden shower benches are much more attractive than shower benches constructed from other materials. These benches can also be used near a pool area or hot tub and are well suited to any locations that receive a lot of moisture.

Wooden work bench – Wooden work benches are not really benches at all, but more like work tables. Nevertheless, a wooden workbench can serve a functional purpose outdoors or in a garage or large shed. Wooden workbenches can be used for small construction projects, as potting benches, or are perfect anytime you need some space to work outdoors or in a garage, shed, basement or other space. You can even build your own small wooden bench while working on your work bench!

There are many types of wooden bench designs to choose from and many uses for wooden benches. Whether you are looking for some extra seating or storage or simply need an interesting piece of furniture to place in the garden, a wooden bench is always at home in the outdoors.

There are many uses for an outdoor sink in your backyard or garden, just as there are a wide variety of outdoor sink types. From your deck or patio to your garden area, outdoor sinks can provide convenience and functionality. Choosing the type of outdoor sink you want will depend on where you are using it and what functions it will be serving. For example, if you are looking for a sink for your outdoor kitchen, it will be different than if you are looking for an outdoor garden sink to be used for potting plants, cleaning up after a day in the yard, or similar tasks.

Here is a rundown of different types of outdoor sinks to make choosing an outdoor sink an easier task:

Outdoor kitchen sink – Outdoor kitchen sinks are similar in look and functionality to indoor kitchen sinks. Most sinks for outdoor kitchens are constructed of stainless steel or cast iron. Just like indoor models, outdoor kitchen sinks can be undermounted or overmounted. The sinks can be incorporated into an outdoor kitchen, or they can be standalone versions. The standalone sinks usually come along with an outdoor sink cart, which provides the framework within which the sink is situated and may also provide storage shelves or additional functionality. No matter what style is chosen, an outdoor kitchen sink makes preparing food for a barbeque or picnic a piece of cake and allows you to stay outdoors during food preparation rather than having to remain in the kitchen.

Outdoor bar sink – Outdoor bar sinks are similar to kitchen sinks, only smaller. This is typically a stainless steel outdoor sink that is made to fit into an outdoor kitchen area. Like the outdoor kitchen sinks, they can be undermounted or overmounted. Outdoor bar sinks are becoming extremely popular and are perfect for entertaining. They can be used as a kitchen sink as well if space is too limited for a larger model.

Outdoor gardening sink – Outdoor gardening sinks are purely functional and can be the perfect place to help with potting plants or cleaning off after a day of gardening. They can also be used to wash off your gardening tools and even the bounty of your vegetable garden before it makes its way into the house. You can find portable outdoor sinks that are perfect for moving around wherever you may need them in the garden, or you can choose an outdoor wall sink that is mounted to the side of the house. For added functionality, it is best to set up a shelf or table near the sink to place items on before or after they are washed if the sink does not come with one.

Outdoor sink station – Outdoor sink stations are basically portable outdoor sinks. They consist of an outdoor sink and hose reel that are self contained in an outdoor sink cabinet. The hose is wound around the reel for storage but can be unwound and hooked up to a water supply which provides water to the sink. Depending on the length of the hose and the location of the spigot, you can move outdoor sink stations all around the yard to bring water to a location that is most convenient for you while working in the garden. Outdoor sink stations are typically made from plastic or stainless steel.

Outdoor utility sink – Outdoor utility sinks are similar to outdoor gardening sinks or slop sinks. They are constructed from plastic or stainless steel primarily, but can also be constructed of other materials, such as cast iron or even copper. These sinks have a deep base to allow room to wash larger items and work well to clean off outdoor items or to have family members clean themselves off after time spent outdoors so the dirt is not tracked in the house.

Portable outdoor sink – A portable outdoor sink can be moved around to any location needed. It is also referred to as an outdoor sink station, since it is comprised of a sink that is connected to some type of station or cabinet that also houses a garden hose. The cabinet with the outdoor sink with hose reel can be wheeled around where needed and the hose can then be unwound and connected to a water source.

Outdoor sink materials – No matter what style of outdoor sink you choose, when it comes to materials stainless steel outdoor sinks are the most popular. This is because they stand up to the elements and require no upkeep. A plastic sink is another popular choice but they do not typically hold up as well. You can also find outdoor sinks in cast iron and copper. Cast iron is heavy so it is not used for portable outdoor sinks and copper will patina with age.

Outdoor sink faucets – An outdoor sink faucet is similar to an indoor sink faucet and typically constructed from stainless steel. They usually have a high arched neck to allow space for larger items to be place underneath.

No matter what type of outdoor sink you are looking for, you can find a wide selection of outdoor sinks at home improvement stores, large retailers and online. In many cases, you can select a sturdy indoor sink to be used outdoors. Outdoor sink prices will vary by the type of sink you are looking for, the size of the sink, whether the sink is enclosed in a cabinet, and the material you choose. It is best to choose a high quality outdoor sink because it will be constantly subjected to the elements and should be made to last.

Garden pots can be a great design element when it comes to planning out your garden décor strategy. This is because garden pots add visual interest, create additional textural and color elements in a garden design, and can be easily moved or changed whenever the mood strikes. A garden pot can be virtually any container that will hold plants or flowers and that can be adapted to provide adequate drainage so that the plants thrive.

Gardening pots are sold in a variety of materials and styles, so there is no end to the types of pots that can be utilized in the garden, or on a deck, patio, or porch. When it comes to garden pots and planters, all you need to do is find a material that you like, make sure the size is appropriate for the plants that will be potted, and then find a style that works well in the space within which you are planning on using your garden pot. Garden pots can add visual interest and can be a great option in locations that are not otherwise easy to grow plants, herbs and flowers. For example, just think of what a few colorful potted rose plants can do for the look of your deck, patio or garden!

Garden pots are available in many materials. Here is a list of some of the more popular ones:

Plastic garden pots – These come in all shapes and sizes, are inexpensive and lightweight. They are also available in a wide variety of colors to fit any décor.

Resin garden pots – The popularity of resin pots stems from the fact that they can be made to look like many other types of pots, such as terracotta, stone, ceramic or stone, yet they are far more lightweight and are also less expensive.

Stone garden pots – Stone has a very textural look which adds visual interest against the softness of flowers or plants. Stone pots can be made from different types of stone and each type offers a unique look. One drawback to these types of pots is that they are very heavy to lift, even when empty so they are not easily moved.

Ceramic garden pots – Ceramic pots offer a huge variety of design options because they can contain any type of design, colors (or series of colors) or finishes. Most ceramic garden pots are glazed so that they have a sealed finish. Some can even contain decorative elements adhered to the pot, such as stones, gems or more. It is best to bring ceramic garden pots indoors (or in a garage) during the winter if temperatures get below freezing since they may crack.

Terracotta garden pots – Terracotta is the material that many people think of when they think of garden flower pots. These pots are traditionally red in color and come in a variety of styles. Terracotta garden pots should also be protected during the winter months.

Clay garden pots – Clay pots are similar to garden pots, except that they do not necessarily have to be reddish in color. Clay pots are even easily made by hand and work best if fired in a kiln and glazed. Clay can also be painted to add visual interest. Like terracotta or ceramic garden pots, clay pots should not be left outdoors during severe winter weather.

Concrete garden pots – Concrete is also a textural element, similar to stone, although it provides a more uniform and rugged look. These types of outdoor garden pots (they’re typically not used indoors) can offer a contemporary feel and are often found as larger planters. One drawback to concrete garden pots is that they are extremely heavy.

Metal garden pots – From aluminum to tin, metal garden pots can be found in a multitude of metals. Each one adds its own specific look, with some looking very contemporary and others blending into a more traditional design. Metal garden pots are typically not as heavy as stone, concrete, or even clay and terracotta pots.

Copper garden pots – Copper garden pots offer a warm and inviting look to a garden’s décor and lend themselves more towards traditional design. The pots age over time into a greenish patina.

Wooden garden pots – Wood provides a very natural and rustic feel but unless they are properly sealed regularly, they will not hold up over the long term. Since the wood will be in constant contact with a moist environment, they will eventually rot. But you will still enjoy years of a natural and weathered look with these types of pots.

Cast iron garden pots – Cast iron garden pots can be a beautiful addition to a traditionally styled garden and will last indefinitely. They are extremely heavy to move, even when empty, so they should be carefully placed in a location where they can remain without being moved.

Decorative garden pots are great for use on decks, patios and porches, in front of garden buildings, and near pools, and add extra color and texture where there are no flower beds available. They are also often used for container gardening or as a place to simply and easily grow a few herbs or fresh vegetables. Container garden pots and herb garden pots come in designs with multiple openings so that different herbs or plants can be situated in the same pot but can be separated, allowing for a variety of plantings with a very small space.

Garden pots and urns or planters are a great addition to any garden. No matter what your budget, you are sure to find a container that enhances your outdoor space. Or, you can simply make your own garden plant pots by finding a sturdy container and drilling a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Making garden pots is a simple activity and a great way to recycle old containers that are no longer being used. Even if you have a container that you have no intention of planting anything in, you can still make a garden hose pot, which provides an attractive way to hide your garden hose when not in use.

No matter what the use or the material, garden pots are a versatile design element that enhance your garden décor.

There are many uses for a garden bench in a backyard or garden, just as there are many styles of garden benches. Garden benches can be used for decorative purposes, to add to a specific style of garden décor in the yard, or they can be used for more functional purposes. The nicest thing about a garden bench is that most of the time, even a functional bench can add beauty to a garden setting.

Here are a few uses for a garden bench:

Storage – A garden storage bench is a great way to add some extra storage to your garden or backyard area. Most benches made for storage are constructed from wood or a plastic or resin material for added durability. Wooden garden benches not only provide a space to store outdoor or gardening items, such as trowels, small shovels and other landscape supplies, but they are an attractive addition to your outdoor space. A plastic or wooden garden bench can be placed right in the garden, along the side of the house or a fence, or on a patio or deck.

Potting – A garden potting bench provides added functionality by offering a place for gardeners to pot their plants. The bench can store gardening and potting supplies and also acts as a potting bench to get the task accomplished.

Seating – Of course, a primary purpose of a garden bench is that it is an attractive way to gain extra seating. Whether you add a metal garden bench, an iron garden bench, or even a stone garden bench to your outdoor space, the addition of the garden furniture can provide an attractive area to sit among your backyard or garden. The bench can be a tucked away little hideaway for watching the birds, basking in the sun, or reading a good book, or it can be incorporated into a space where it is used for entertaining. No matter where the bench is located, or what type of material the bench is made of, an outdoor garden bench can serve a very utilitarian function. For benches that are used primarily for seating, a garden bench cushion can be added to make the space more comfortable. There are a wide variety of garden bench cushions available, so it is easy to find one that fits in with your garden decorating style while also being made of fabrics that can withstand the outdoor elements.

Beauty – Sometimes a garden bench is placed within a garden or other outdoor space simply for aesthetic purposes. Yes, it can be used for seating, but its primary purpose is sometimes just to add beauty to a space. Garden benches come in many styles and can be found in a myriad of materials, such as wood, stone, concrete, cast iron, metal, and teak, among others. A beautiful teak garden bench set among a bed of wildflowers or an ornate cast iron garden bench can add interest and texture to your backyard or garden design.

The nice thing about a garden bench is that even if you select one with a primary purpose in mind, such as extra seating, you will find that they offer additional functionality as well.

Garden décor comprises everything in your outdoor space or garden that creates a mood or sets a style for the space. Similar to interior décor, outdoor garden décor sets the theme for what you want your space to look like and different aspects of the way you set up and decorate your backyard or garden will add to that theme. Home and garden décor aren’t really that different in principle, although with lawn and garden décor, you are dealing with a more open and expansive space and it is generally a more informal process.

Outdoor garden décor encompasses everything from whether you have a deck, patio or pool to whether you have loads of beds loaded with wildflowers or a well manicured lawn. But it’s the finishing touches that really set the tone for the style of your backyard – the little accessories placed around the yard that bring in the personal elements that are all your own.

For example, if you are into a whimsical garden décor theme, you may want to place gnome garden statues throughout your flower beds to add some charm. If Asian garden décor is more your thing, then you will tend towards a more manicured look with Asian-inspired accents to give you the feel of the east. Those who like a more rustic garden décor theme may opt for more natural objects made from wood or those with a more classic charm.

When it comes to lawn and garden decorations, there is no end to what you can find if you are looking for it. Home improvement stores, warehouse stores, lawn and garden stores, online retailers and a variety of garden décor catalogs offer loads of different types of garden decorations. From metal garden décor, comprising statues, wall hangings and small or large objects to place around the yard, to theme related items, such as frog garden décor or dragonfly garden décor (two very popular themes!), there are lawn and garden decorations to suit any decorating style. There are also more utilitarian items, such as garden fencing or lighting, that can be found to suit different decorating styles .

Making your garden decorative can be an informal and fun process because many of the rules for interior décor can be lightened up a bit. Unlike the more stringent rules, such as how objects should be placed in groupings or what colors go together well, outdoor garden decorations can be selected piece by piece or simply because you like them or bought them on a whim. There are no rules – after all, your garden space is a place to relax and let loose a little, so the more color and the more interest that graces the nooks and crannies of your backyard, the better. A garden decoration “works” in a space if it makes you happy to look at it. It’s really as simple as that. No fancy experienced decorator needs to tell you that – a garden is a much more informal space than a living room (although there are those that enjoy formal and manicured gardens, and in that case, what makes them happy may be a bit more reserved and streamlined.)

If you are looking for garden décor ideas, peruse through home and garden magazines, spend some time surfing the net, pick up a garden décor catalog, or simply stroll through your favorite stores. Then, when you find something you like, add it to your garden or yard in a place that seems logical and sit back and enjoy the view!

Outdoor landscaping projects are very often done by do-it-yourselfers. Putting in a flower bed, a vegetable garden or a few small trees is a task that most homeowners will choose to do themselves, rather than hiring a professional. Other projects, such as laying mulch, landscaping around a newly installed garden pond, pool or patio, or incorporating a decorative rock garden into a garden décor scheme are all easily accomplished with a little know-how and a bit of sweat equity.

One of the hardest aspects of attempting a do-it-yourself landscape project is determining the correct amount of landscape supplies needed for the job. Landscape supplies, such as top soil, mulch, crushed stone, sand or small pebbles are usually ordered in bulk and are difficult to transport if you run short and have to make a second trip. In many cases, if your project is large enough, landscaping supply companies will deliver the garden landscape supplies directly to your home, since they are too difficult to transport in a car or minivan. That is why it is so important to make sure that you correctly determine the amount of landscape supplies that are needed the first time around.

Many garden landscape supplies are sold by the cubic yard. In order to determine how many cubic yards of any type of landscape material you need, you must first determine the square footage of the area you are looking to cover. This is done by measuring the width and length of the area, if it is a square or rectangle or by determining the diameter of the space if is a circle. Once you have determined the square footage of the area you need to cover, you then need to determine the depth of landscaping supplies that you need to lay and factor that depth into the equation along with the square footage. Square footage is typically measured in feet and depth is measures in inches. One easy way to figure this out is to use a materials calculator that can be found online. This will do all of the calculations for you if you just put in the measurements. Another option is to provide the landscaping suppliers with the dimensions and they will be able to calculate how much you need to order.

Taking the time to accurately determine how much you need when it comes to garden landscape supplies will save you a lot of time, as well as money. Similar to the idea in construction that you should always measure twice and cut once, in order to avoid costly mistakes, making sure that you only need to make one trip to the home improvement or garden store to pick up supplies will allow you to spend your time most efficiently. When you are ordering wholesale landscape supplies, this is especially important since having to arrange for an extra delivery or pick up of additional supplies can be rather costly.

Figuring out your landscaping supply needs is an important step in any do-it-yourself landscape or garden project. If you cannot figure it out yourself, be sure to use a materials calculator online or ask the landscape supply company where you are getting your materials from for help in determining the proper quantity to order.

Your backyard or garden is an extension of your home, and the garden décor you choose says as much about you and your living space as your interior décor. Garden décor encompasses all aspects of your exterior living space, from the landscaping, trees, flowers and shrubs in your backyard, to the small and whimsical items that make your garden yours. There are many types of garden decorations available and a few well placed items can really make your outdoor space one that is unique, relaxing and fun.

Outdoor garden décor can consist of everything from a large gazebo that makes a grand appearance in the middle of your yard, to a wind chime that gently blows in the breeze from a corner branch. There are no steadfast rules for garden décor as there sometimes are for interior décor. When you select garden decorations for your home, it is best to simply select items that you enjoy viewing or that make you feel like your backyard is your own personal oasis.

The process of decorating your yard or garden is similar, however, to how you would decorate the inside of your home. Creating your own unique outdoor space begins with large decisions, such as whether you are going to construct a patio or deck (if you don’t already have one), have a flower or vegetable garden, or plant interesting shrubs or trees. Then to add to the ambience of the space, items such as gazebos, pergolas, arbors, garden bridges, fountains, waterfalls, or ponds can be considered. All of these aspects of home garden décor are rather impactful, since they are usually focal points of your garden or yard. This is similar to deciding on the main decisions of a room within your home, such as architectural elements or wall color.

Once the main focal points have been established, you can then embellish your outdoor living space with some lawn and garden décor, just as you would add furniture to a room after making a few main decisions. Items such as outdoor patio furniture, garden pots and planters, garden benches, patio umbrellas, bird baths or bird feeders, and fire pits fall into this type of garden décor and begin to personalize your outdoor space even more.

Finally, in order to create a space that is truly personal, you can choose a garden decoration or two, which can add to a style of unique garden décor that is yours and yours alone. These items are similar to the accessories that you would add to the interior of your home after the furniture and other larger objects were in place. Garden decoration can take many shapes and forms and can be found in unique objects such as garden statues and sculptures, stepping stones, interesting lawn ornaments, suncatchers, wind chimes, flags or even an interesting rock or sign that is haphazardly placed among your flowers.

Unique and whimsical garden décor can be found in many forms, both large and small. No matter what types of structures, objects or ornaments you decide to add to your garden, you can’t go wrong as long as you are selecting items that make you feel good about enjoying your outdoor space.

When personalizing your backyard, there are many considerations to keep in mind. Do you want a deck or patio? How about a pool? Do you want to leave space for a vegetable or flower garden? Would you like to add interesting and unique features such as a fountain, arch, gazebo or garden building? The possibilities are endless and are limited only by your design ideas, outdoor space and budget. No matter what type of design you choose for your backyard or garden, there is sure to be an assortment of landscape supplies to help you turn your garden decor designs into reality.

Selecting landscape supplies is sometimes done in accordance with a landscape design specialist, or for the do-it-yourselfer, you can view a variety of different landscaping supplies by going to your nearest landscape supply company. Most landscape supplies cannot be ordered online because they are heavy and are ordered in bulk (such as stone, decking, mulch, soil, etc), but there are some items that can be purchased through online landscape supply retailers or even wholesale landscape supply companies. Even if you cannot purchase your supplies online, there are many sites available to give you an idea of what different landscaping supplies look like when incorporated into a finished design, to help make your choices easier.

Depending on what your outdoor project consists of, you will have a wide variety of options to choose from. There are too many types of landscape supplies to even begin to list, but here is a sampling just to give you an idea of how vast your options can be.

For example, if you want to have an outdoor area to sit, dine and entertain, you may be considering building a patio or deck. Once you decide, you will then have to decide what type of landscaping supplies you would like to use. If a deck is your choice, you can choose from a variety of decking materials, including different types of wood (cedar, treated woods, etc) as well as newer recycled products that require virtually no maintenance. But you may also need supplies such as crushed rock or stone, dirt and more to build the foundation of the deck. Patio choices offer an even greater variety of landscape supplies to choose from, such as pavers, brick, natural stone, stamped concrete, patio paving slabs and more, and may also require more ‘behind the scenes’ supplies, such as crushed stone, sand and soil to prepare the area before the final surface is constructed.

There are also a myriad of possibilities for other garden landscape supplies that can accommodate almost any type of design and can add interest to your outdoor space. In addition to bulk products, such as topsoil, mulch, crushed stone and pebbles, gravel, sand, and other landscape hardgoods, there are also a variety of more decorative items that can enhance your backyard or garden. Consider items such as garden edging, bridges, gazebos, arbors, fountains, ponds, garden statues, lighting and more to spruce up your outdoor living space.

The type of supplies you choose and the landscape suppliers you select will be determined in large part by the type of outdoor project you are undertaking. For smaller projects you may be able to purchase your supplies from online landscape suppliers, but for larger projects it is best to find wholesale landscape supplies from a local company at a reduced rate. If you are working with a landscape designer, they very often have a prior relationship with wholesalers to get you the best prices possible on landscaping supplies. But, even if you are tackling a garden or landscape project on your own, you should be able to find landscape supplies that fit your needs at a price that you are comfortable with. Finding suppliers that will deliver the materials to your home is also an important consideration, especially with bulk supplies or larger items.
